Proxy/Fiction by Jonathan Lev opens tonight at Art-O-Mat

From Art-O-Mat gallery:

Just a reminder to ignore those threats of rain & come join us tonight. (Well, maybe bring an umbrella.)

You are invited to an Opening at Art-O-Mat TONIGHT, June 26 from 6 to 9 pm.

Art-O-Mat is pleased to present Proxy / Fiction - Paintings by Jonathan Lev

Our First Summer exhibition will open tonight, Thursday June 26, with a reception from 6 to 9pm.

There will be food, drink, and live music by Johnny Jackpot, Rawdge, and Nate Reed.

Jonathan Lev explores the space in our psyche where modern myth meets artistic fact. Lev exploits what he views as a long historic tradition of artists ’selling’ the mystique of the studio. He comfortably and coyly blends contemporary advertising and film motifs with what on the surface appear to be conventional figurative studies. There is an almost too perfect placement of objects and use of perspective that lures the viewer in. Lev is a very skilled painter and he is able to convey a wide array of emotions that contain what might be called serious humor. There is an absurdity to his perspectives that help to further elevate already iconic figures - famous personalities who play the part of historic painters. At the same time Lev offers an immediacy and presence that for a moment seems real.

Hey LIQ, I am always looking for openings/parties/events in LIC. There doesn’t seem to be one place to find that out, eg LICNY says PS1 is Sundays, and I think it’s Saturdays. And there’s often stuff at the sculpture center on Purves. And concerts at water taxi, and parties elsewhere, etc. I have to go to every site and check and am probably missing a lot of things. Any chance we can talk you into doing a once a week round up of “goings on in the hood? “

Yes, that’d be great! More arts!

Warm Up at PS1 is definitely on Saturdays…. starting very soon.

would hold more events like those at McCarren Park Pool. The Renegade Craft Fair the other weekend was sweet, as are most of the bands they have.

who uses the word ’sweet,’ except Midwestern hipsters.

dirty, dirty people even when they don’t sign their names.

Go to Brooklyn Brandon, you’ll be so much happier.

# 5, I went to the renegade craft fair and I also go to see music there too. Living in LIC, it’s so easy to go to events in Williamsburg–al of 5 minutes away–but let’s leave it there. It’s nice to come home to our quiet part of town. Besides, the Pool just happens to be a really big space for events.

How original. The old ugly male painter with the much more attractive and underdressed female subject.

McCarren Park & Pool is in Greenpoint, not Williamsburg. to get to the borders of Williamsburg, you have to go farther south/southeast down along Lorimer St. and Union Ave. to around Metropolitan Avenue, and Southwest down Driggs and Bedford to about North 7th or 6th Street.
