Shill.

I’m #1- Nope…I live in Avalon and have no affiliation with Greenmarket. I just am happy to have locally grown fresh fruit and veggies.

It’s not much of a green market when there’s only 3 stands…

I wonder why the greenmarket is not expanding.

We are exactly two subway stops from Union Square, the original, biggest and best greenmarket in NYC. That’s good enough for me.

#5 – The Greenmarket will not expand its operation here until there is enough customer support for the vendors they are currently placing here. #6 – Sometimes it might be very handy on a hot saturday to stay in the neighborhood and buy your corn and tomatoes or whatever from the farmers who are provided to us by the same Greenmarket organizaation that runs the flagship in Union Square. I agree that the original Greenmarket is the biggest and the best, but I don ‘t find it necessary to run there every Saturday when I can get local produce here. When the Greenmarket opened in Union Square in 1976, I was there on opening day. I lived in Gramercy Park then, and I supported them every weekend as they grew from a “handful” of farmers to what they are today. The Greenmarket wants to expand here…that’s why they have a permit for the entire stretch of 48th Ave….but unless the neighborhood shows support, that will never happen.

I have a theory that because of the kinds of people attracted to LIC — many busy singles who don’t spend a lot of free time in the neighborhood and prefer quick convenience food — you’ll never see the Greenmarket do really well.

Greenmarkets are most appealing to families (who buy in bulk), those who cook at home (tend to be older) and more health-conscious people who appreciate (and can afford) good food.

#8 that is probably a very plausible theory. However, the new condo, while they are a selling at a much slower pace, will bring the kind of shopper the Greenmarket needs. I also think the Hunters Point South will have many families (when ever it is built) that could support a nice big greenmarket. It will take time but I think it will happen.
