“Post No Bills” Construction site beautification project under way

Legal streetart coordinated by Chashama, Vernon & Borden Ave, LIC

5pointz may have been the first legal walls for streetart in Long Island City, but now they’re not the only ones. Simone Development, the developers behind the Hunters Point Condos double whammy, have collaborated with Chashama, an non-profit arts group, to beautify their construction site walls with streetart created by local artists.

“The creators described the idea in a news release as a “construction site beautification program” and “New York’s first plein-air street gallery,” open around the clock, seven days a week. As if they needed to, they added that the show — called, of course, “Post No Bills” — is “free and open to the public” until Aug. 31 or perhaps until the Hunters View condominiums are completed.”NY Times

What’s funny is the confusion legal streetart causes the police:

“An overzealous security guard for the condo project shut down the art-making one night, rebuffing all attempts at explanation. Police cruisers constantly stopped.”

Granted, art on the streets in NYC is generally considered vandalism, which is unfortunate, but we’ll leave those opinions to ourselves. If you don’t know where the condo sites are, the ‘Gallerie Pulaski’ is at the LIC base of the Pulaski Bridge (careful at that intersection), and the other site is at the intersection of Vernon and Borden Ave.

Well I would have like to have gone to this opening Friday night. That’s why I posted asking if LIQ could do “what’s up in the hood” feature. I seem to always read read her comments after things happen. There’s no one place to find out what’s going in around here….

Wouldn’t it be great if developers asked artists to help beautify their ugly buildings themselves, and not just the plywood fencing surrounding the construction sites.

Thanks #1 for the suggestion. We will work on it. However, it takes time as people need to know to send us their event info ahead of time. This blog has barely been in existence for 6 months.
