Shakespeare literally kicks booty at Long Island City’s Secret Theatre

Who said Shakespeare was for sissies? ‘Macbeth’ at the Secret Theatre, LIC

When was the last time you strolled off the streets of LIC and into a rigorously choreographed punk rock Shakespearean street fight? Well lucky for you, the Secret Theatre‘s latest production of ‘Macbeth’ is offering up the kind of environmental theatre that effectively draws the audience in on the action, save for actually picking up a weapon and jumping into the fray.

Director Richard Mazda, who is also the Secret Theatre’s Artistic Director & Founder, made an interesting choice in employing not only his intimate theatre space, but the loading dock, parking lot, stairwell, hallway…. This is a ‘Macbeth’ with wife beaters and chains, baseball bats and lead pipes, spiked belts and Doc Martens, but not without the passion, violence, and raw emotion that brings Shakespeare’s work to life.

Ready for action: the cast of ‘Macbeth’ at the Secret Theatre, LIC

The run will go fast, so don’t miss your chance to check out some unforgettable local theatre, now complete with live action street fighting, right here in LIC. ‘Macbeth’ runs from June 17-21 and 24-27 at 8pm, with a special matinee on the 20th at 3:30pm. Buy tickets online or at the box office. The Secret Theatre is located at 44-02 23rd St, LIC, 718.392.0722.

“Punk rock,” with a guy with a red bandana on his head? Looks more Adam and the Ants than the Sex Pistols if you ask me. But I’ll take your word for it!

Looks like the gay porn version of Macbeth.

“Is this a dagger I see before me, or are you just happy to see me?”

Oh, come on, No. 5. Unless you are an uptight Shakesperian scholar or a member of the cast, you should see it was just a light-hearted comment in reaction to No. 2. Would it help if I told you the play looks like a lot of fun? There you go.

Yeah, I thought #3 was funny.

I saw this show last night. It was gritty, raw, inventive, fast paced, honest, well acted, beautifully directed, and very creative use of the space. This is not my favorite Shakespeare play but this was certainly my favorite production of it. Patrick Stewart can keep his turkey sandwich, the time just flew last night. Highly recommended.
