The days of 5pointz are numbered, but it’s not going down tomorrow

Graffiti in the making at 5pointz, Court Sq, Long Island City
Here’s the article about the eventual transformation of 5pointz into a 1.2 million sqft high-rise. Accordingly:
“Wolkoff [the owner] is now waiting for the fortunes of Long Island City to change. For now, 5 Pointz will remain what he calls “the largest aerosol art building in the world,” but he is looking to leave a legacy for his grandchildren.
“Eventually we will build there, but in the meantime, we’ll still let the artists go,” said Jerry Wolkoff. “We have some plans and renderings, but nothing concrete.”"
There’s going to be mixed feelings about this, as there always is, but it’s safe to say that 5pointz has definitely held a special legacy in LIC, and liQcity will be sad to see it go. It kind of makes one think of 11 Spring Street: a gallery of streetart & graffiti buried under the sheetrock and Viking appliances of fancy condos. 5pointz is definitely a knock down, so maybe at least the diehards can get a piece of the rubble a la the Berlin Wall.
- Graffiti now, condos later in LIC [Real Deal]
none taken.
Well… we all knew it wasn’t going to last forever. It will be interesting for those people in the condo highrise to be living on top of the elevated 7 train…
The article doesn’t say it is going to be a condo high rise. The owners sound like they are kind of “think outside the box” type of guys. It could wind up being something pretty interesting.
Unavoidable, but unfortunate.
One of the aspects of this neighborhood that keeps the place from becoming Murray Hill.
I saw some of renderings. I heard they actually spend a decent amount of money on it. I believe it calls for mixed used tower – commercial on the bottom and condo on top. So, 7 train shouldn’t be a problem. They want to make it their signature building.
well, at least it this will solve the bootleg dvd problem in nyc…
True artists don’t rip off other people’s work. It pissed me off to learn that went on at 5pointz.
There are many artist studios inside these buildings too…it’s going to displace a lot of people using it for studio space, sad times…I think there are enough condos in LIC, I mean come on, how many more do we really need?
10, until every single trust fund kid in the U.S., Eurotrash a**hole, and Asian bankers’ son/daughter gets theirs.
Well said #11.

what are you talking about #9?
15, Someone said there’s a bootleg DVD operation at 5pointz.
#11 That’s the new face of LIC
#11, nice!
This is a sad day, i live in a new condo building in the area, and i love this building, its actually my favorite building in Queens, i wish we could get this building landmarked, its sad the most people, including politicians dont consider graffiti a true art…
Please respect an individuals right to do what they want with their personal property. If I owned the place I’d be looking at develpoment options as well.
we are respecting the rights of property owners. we just have love for the studios and art it produces. also.
Considering the economic downturn and how tight credit is and will be, most likely this will remain in place for a good number of years. Thank goodness they didn’t just tear it down and end up with a vacant lot, like so many other parts of LIC are/will become.
Perhaps we can get community gardens and water access during the down time in exchange for tax credits…
Mer John, the days of community gardens in areas like LIC are over, unless someone like Bette Midler comes along and bankrolls the concept. And it will be sad to see the last of the artists in LIC go, but it is inevitable.
Waaaah Waaaah to all of you. Graffiti can be art at times, but a whole lot of the “art” on 5pointz is just someone’s tag spray painted really big…Where is the creativity in that?
5pointz in not the last art studio building in lic. its just the most recognizable. the studios there are overpriced, so many artists have found space elsewhere in the area.
Property owners don’t have the right to shit on a neighborhood #20. Where’s the respect for people who have their backyards & windows walled in by a building that was NEVER meant to be there in the first place. Twenty years ago, if a landlord tried to do half the shit that they are getting away with now, they would have had their knees broken and the police would have be more than happy to look the other way.
Absentee landlords are scum, plain and simple. They have absolutely no interest with a neighborhood other than raping it.
