Every Wednesday night through the summer, Socrates Sculpture Park presents an outdoor international film festival, featuring a film from a different country each night, along with food and occasionally a related live performance.

Such is the case tonight, with the feature film Chop Shop, an introduction by the director, and a performance by a local band:

2007, 84 mins. Directed by Ramin Bahrani. With Alejandro Polanco, Isamar Gonzalez. A deeply affecting slice of urban neorealism, this Queens-made film, set in the Willets Point “Iron Triangle” near Shea Stadium, follows a 12-year-old orphan who ekes out an existence with his teenaged sister.

PERFORMANCE: A mix of folk, rock, country and jazz, The Robe Crowe Situation will perform a blend of music and poetry.

FOOD: Homestyle American cooking by Josephine’s Soul Food CafĂ© in Queens.

If you’re looking for a creative way to get there, the LIC Boathouse offers an organized kayaking trip to and fro some of the films. Advance sign up is required. If kayaking is not your speed, you can get to SSP by bicycling on the new bike lanes, or taking the Q103 bus, which runs up & down Vernon Blvd.

While you’re there, check out some of the interesting sculptures, including a greenhouse on wheels. Not to mention, some decent foliage. Full Flickr set here.
