Long Island City’s long lost East River footbridge concept discovered

Rendering: conceptual East River Footbridge linking Manhattan and LIC

Everyone loves Long Island City’s speedy commute into the city, but it seems one architect has been itching to make it even more direct. Curbed dug up the conceptual East River Footbridge from architect Andre Tchelistcheff. Voilà: imagine if you could saunter right across the East River via footbridge from LIC to Manhattan? (LIC real estate brokers start your calculators.)

If it ever came to fruition, here’s how it would work »

Breaking LIC news: car drives into Vernon Blvd restaurant

Car accident on 47th Rd & Vernon Blvd, Long Island City

Vernon Blvd isn’t the safest street in the hood, but it isn’t known for cars jumping the curb, either – that is, until a few minutes ago. Watch where you’re walking Hunters Pointers, because insanity just ensued on Vernon: a car crossing the Blvd seemed to be following a livery cab, the cab stopped short, and the car swerved out behind it into a streetlamp on the corner of 47th Rd (knocking it down completely) and then continued swerving right into the front of Masso Restaurant.

We haven’t heard of any injuries reported and police and fire dept are clogging the scene, so steer clear of the mess if you can. And, yeah, watch out for cars on the LIC sidewalk… and maybe falling bricks from the sky too. You never know around here. In any case, have a safe evening.

Long Island City makes a cameo in the new Grand Theft Auto scenescape

Sprunk replaces the PepsiCo Sign in LIC

It’s not really the pinnacle a neighborhood dreams of achieving, if neighborhoods do dream at all – but aptly categorized as an ‘Oddity’ is the news that Long Island City makes an appearance in the new Grand Theft Auto releasing on April 29th. The new release is based off NYC, which is called ‘Liberty City’, and Queens, which is called ‘Dukes’ features a very familiar looking sign for a drink called ‘Sprunk’.

I Spy in LIC – Shredded Flower Taxi, Mother Mary & Brewser RIP

Flower Taxi in Long Island City

Garden in Transit… Zebra style?

This junker was spotted on Jackson Ave in the Courthouse Square area. It appears as though somebody went shred-happy with a Garden in Transit decal from a flower taxi. It definitely, um…spruces up that ride.

Documenting the death of X-mas trees in Hunters Point

Christmas Trees in NYC

Seems last week, everyone in Hunters Point decided to get rid of their Christmas trees on the same day. Collective consciousness? Or just a well timed trash day? Who knows. This post was inspired more by the photography of the trees, than the reason behind it. I’m sure there’s some great philosophical commentary about the symbolism of a disposable tree representing the celebration of consumer greed (and Jesus’s birthday of course)… but you won’t find it here.

But you will find another abandoned X-mas tree »
