49th Ave to go one-way; LIC residents unaware of CB2 public hearing

49th Ave & Vernon Blvd, Long Island City

A couple weeks back we announced and then did a recap of the CB2 public hearing regarding Hunters Point South and what is now becoming a bit of a hotbed issue, the traffic changes on 49th Ave – namely, the street becoming a one-way. An online petition had actually been started, but apparently certain LIC residents weren’t aware of the proposed changes at all:

“All was not well among the public present at the hearing. Brian Adams, president of the Hunters Point Merchants Association, said people who live near the street were not made aware of the public hearing, noting he circulated fliers. ‘Even as I was posting and distributing them, people were coming up to me,” he said. “The community is not aware of this.’

But Adams agreed something needed to be done about traffic on the street. CB2 Chairman Joe Conley said the board had gone through the proper procedures to publicize the hearing, including announcing it at the previous month’s meeting.

The plan also received some criticism from lifelong Hunters Point resident Frank Corrado, who argued 49th Avenue should be made westbound. ‘If they decide later to make 5th Street one way, it’s going to go south,’ he said, warning that such an arrangement would make 49th Avenue a kind of safety valve for commuters driving to the Long Island Expressway from the Queens West condominium towers.”

Seriously… give me a break. “the community” will find some reason to whine about anything. The whiners even concede that this is a good change.

Is Frank Corrado a city planner? What sort of models does he base his contrarian opinion on?

All over NYC, some streets go east and some go west. What’s the big deal? Seriously, if you’re that upset by traffic patterns on an urban street, maybe it’s time to move to the Ozarks.

He is a lifetime resident. Isn’t that enough for you? Lifetime resident status atuomatically makes you an expert on all manners of subjects.

No aspersions to 3′s intelligence but the comment is simple minded. Nobody thinks lifetime or long time status makes you automatically an expert. But it certainly means you have likely experienced traffic patterns and their evolution more thoroughly than some newcomer genius who thinks he knows it all.

Comment’s like 3 are designed to minimize the opinions of long time residents without adding anything meaningful to the discussion.

4, No. 3 was simply being a smart-ass.

No, it was designed to minimize the opinions of long time residents who feel that your right to an opinion is directly proportunate to the number of years you’ve lived here. #4 clearly feels this way and quickly jumped in in defense. In their eyes the voice of a lifetime resident is a close as you can humanly get to god. Their words are to be cherished and studied. Only the words of a lifetime resident whose family has lived in LIC for multiple generations can be taken more seriously. Lowest on the scale is anyone who lives in one of the new buildings. Tower residents much like the slaves in the early day of this country are only allowed to have three-fifths of an opinion.

3/6, Paranoid much?

Your right #6, I do think you are the lowest of the low, but not everyone in the new buildings, only “YOU”.

6, where do you get these ideas? Some long timers are expressing opinions based on experience. they are not saying they are god or that they are right. Do you mean to say there is nothing in life where you have enough experience to voice an opinion?

Many old timers will preface their remarks in fact by saying “it’s just my opinion…” I’ve observed quite the opposite with some newcomers who seem far more ready to shout down anyone that does not agree with them.

But can we stop with the insults?

#6 is just one of those new comers that move to hood 3 hrs ago and already knows exactly what we need. We’ve seen them come and we’ve seen them go.

5th St. is another candidate for unidirectionality. IMO

Townie, that’s the plan when Hunters Point South is underway. Look at the EIS for the project. 2nd Street is also going one-way.

It should be done now. Two cars can barely pass each other on 5th.
