Long Island City Town Hall gets heated with MTA’s 7 train weekend shutdown

Apparently things got pretty heated last night during the 7 train Town Hall at LIC’s Manducatis Rustica. In a packed house, MTA reps came face to face with locals – all frustrated, some straight-up irate – who sounded off on the 7 train but also on the infernal noise of the MTA exhaust fan. According to Fox, Van Bramer is demanding a follow-up meeting with the MTA to move forward.

Fox also spoke with Van Bramer before the Town Hall to discuss the 7 train issues:

In addition, here’s a podcast of a recent WNYC interview with Van Bramer:

Second that. This should have been done years ago. Thanks to all that showed up.

I’m an N train rider and only minimally impacted by the 7 issues, but I’m pleased to see Van Bramer’s response to this. I’ve liked the guy since I first read up on him during the primary, and am increasingly impressed. Glad to see him stepping up like this.

Oh please. He’s a democrat, for C’s sake. This is all for the camera. Though if it works then it’ll be a nice bonus. At least there is some noise in the air about how dysfunctional the MTA functions. They are supremely horrendous. Never in my life have I seen such poor management up close. This is NYC they should be running a much tighter ship. What are we up to 9 million population now?

Of course only Democrats pander to the media….

#4 you must be a functional retard or a republican.

I love the signs and the pictures the MTA has up in the station. “This is what we are doing” Right… I walked up to court square this weekend and counted no fewer than 15 MTA employees standing around at street level drinking coffee and talking laughing, etc.

did anyone mention the problems on monday (presidents day)? it was a total mistake to have the 7 service suspended on a monday whether it was a holiday or not. queensboro plaza at rush hour was insane – the stairwells were packed wall to wall, platform to platform with standing people and getting off the N (queens bound) left us stuck on the top platform with no way to exit until we could make our way down through the masses. that kind of scenario can be dangerous!

Finally, the LIC public has an articulate advocate. It’s been a long time coming. I hope Van Bremer continues to press the MTA on this issue and holds them to account.

4 says “This is NYC they should be running a much tighter ship.” This is laughable. I think this is probably the first time I’ve seen “NYC” and “tighter ship” appear in the same sentence.

No, MTA is living up exactly to the qualities that long-suffering NY’ers have been long accustomed: laziness, rudeness, lack of care, lack of talent and motivation, and wastefulness.

Areas in outer Queens and in Brooklyn with poor mass transit have dollar vans that pick up the slack – why don’t we have something like that in LIC, shuttling in and out of the tunnel?

#10 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

10, I’ve thought the same thing for many years. LIC never has dollar vans. Even if they dumped me right outside the Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan I’d be happy. It’s a quick, easy run for anybody looking to make some easy money.

#11 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

#10, we don’t need dollar vans, we just need to MTA to do their jobs. We don’t have poor mass transit, we have poor managment of mass transit.

#12 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

Agreed, 12. Dollar vans aren’t a sufficient substitute for regular subway service. But until the MTA gets its finger out of his behind, there’s plenty of business out there for an entrepreneur looking to exploit our situation.

#13 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

what are dollar vans?

#14 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

Go Jimmy! This is why you got our vote! Woohoo

Baaa-aaa-aah.

How can that MTA woman get away with saying it would cost $113,000 per weekend to run a shuttle bus? That is ridiculous!!! I can buy two buses, get insurance, get a driver, pay for the tolls and the gas and come nowhere close to $113,000 for a weekend!!!!!!!!!

#17 17 / 1 year, 11 months ago

Hopefully Van Bramer isnt just doing this for camera exosure like his predecessor and actually gets something done. Until then the verdict is still out on Jimmy.

#18 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

I’m not buying MTA’s excuses about the cost of running the shuttle bus either. They have buses, and they have employees who drive buses. So just let them put in some extra hours. Where are the other costs that would drive the total to $113K?

#19 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

Agree w/ 17-19.

Even more simplistically they are already running buses – rather then have them go to QBP send them into Manhattan. Is there something about that which majically make the price go up. Is it more expensive to drive west instead of north?

I also hope Jimmy does not fade away on this issue now that he got some camera time and good press. We are watching.

I think it’s just stubbornness on the MTA’s part.. and extreme disorganization. I agree with others, it’s good that Van Bramer is making noise about this, but it’s also clear that he is using this for media attention. He’s a politician – it’s not Democrat or Republican. In a way, who cares though if it gets a shuttle to Grand Central, which is what everyone knows is needed. The MTA is very clear the community wants that.. it has been for years. Every year they hold press conferences and protests… the MTA just don’t seem to care. Making more noise might not be the answer, since there is obviously some other root problem within the MTA that needs to be resolved.

#21 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

If you continue to drag the MTA through the mud on TV and in the papers they will get the message. Like all politicians their interests are in self preservation. They don’t care about the residents of this neighborhood, but they do care about appearing to care.

#22 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

I took the private shuttle (LIC Express) this weekend and it was great. We were in GC in less than ten minutes and on our way back we took a little longer because the Midtown Tunnel was reduced to one lane, but even with one lane we took 15 to 20 minutes.

The least the MTA and Port Authority should do is exempt the private shuttle from paying the toll for the tunnel. I want to thank ever business in the neighborhood for sponsoring this shuttle. It is a great idea and it made this whole 7 train debacle a much better experience.

#23 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

And it certainly doesn’t cost $113,000 to run the private shuttle

#24 Anonymous / 1 year, 11 months ago

A noisy train fan, ‘eh. Too bad. It’s better than breathing all that exhaust fumes from cars.
