Steeple of St. Mary’s Church, LIC

St. Mary’s Church on Vernon Blvd and 49th Ave has been celebrating their 140th Anniversary for the past year. There are photos and stories from past and present Long Island City on display, and some special community events coming up for the holiday season:

  • This Saturday, Nov 21st at 6:15pm St. Mary’s will be hosting a Pasta Night consisting of a homemade Italian cooked pasta, meatballs and sausage dinner, as well as beverages, dessert, coffee, and tea for only $10/person.

  • Next month, St. Mary’s will be holding a Holiday Flea Market in the parish hall on Dec 5th, as well as their Annual Advent Prayer Service and Organ Concert featuring Ms. Katie Maloan on Dec 6th at 5pm. 1008 49th Ave, LIC, 718.786.0705‎

Have any extra canned food and/or abandoned toys lying around? In time for the holiday season, Long Island City real estate firm Modern Spaces is serving as an official drop-off center for canned food in conjunction with City Harvest, as well as an official drop-off center for Toys for Tots. If you would like to make a donation to two worthy causes this holiday season, go to their Vernon Blvd office and donate in the boxes out front. 47-34 Vernon Blvd, LIC, 718.784.1110

  • REMINDER: Lounge 47‘s Benefit Auction for their friend in need is TONIGHT from 7pm-2am at the restaurant. 47-10 Vernon Blvd, LIC, 718.937.2044

I always thought the church would look great if they installed some up lights. It would be a nice focal point on Vernon during the evening. Maybe some local light designer could do some pro bono work for the church.

Hi All,

Toys for Tots is asking that all gifts be New or Newly Wrapped. These are gifts that will be presented to children in traditional holiday fashion.

Thanks for all of your support and please feel free to call me with any questions

Hi.

What fond childhood memories are flooding through as I see a pix of St. Mary’s RC church! In the l960′s, I attended St. Mary’s Elementary School. Is the school still there, too? Across the street from the school was the convent and a small parking lot that sometimes became our playground during lunch time. The nuns wore habits (the “hat” looked like navy blue or black steeples); the rectory was between the school and the church; my first taste of a slice of pizza was from a pizza shop on Vernon Blvd. down from the church, thanks to Mary D. Memories are also of penny candies such as buttons on sheets; Bazooka bubble gum w/comics; shoe strings; Popsicle ice pops that let you break it horizontally in half so it could be shared with a friend… Are there any ole schoolers out there who went to St. Mary’s when we kids were afraid to be called into Rev. Mother’s office because she would call each of us “You bold thing!” before calling our parents who always sided with the educators?????

Hey girls, do you remember how we used to wet toilet paper and throw it onto the ceiling so when it dried it would fall off and hit some unsuspecting classmate (or teacher)? The statutes of limitation have been long gone for those infractions! Ah, fond memories! Take care :-
