Scathing disdain for new B62 bus line in Brooklyn & Long Island City

New B62 bus stop at Jackson Ave and 11th St, Long Island City
Well it finally happened. The legendary B61 bus route, which ran from Red Hook (Brooklyn) to Long Island City has been split into two routes, and the brand new B62 line now runs a humble route from Downtown Brooklyn to Queens Plaza. Though the intention was to ease congestion and improve bus service, the general consensus about the B62 has been quite… unsatisfactory. The MTA disappoints? Shocking.
Por ejemplo:
“A twenty three minute wait!?! Are they out of their minds??? It used to be every 10 minutes at that hour! And for good reason! A lot of people take the bus at that hour! Where the hell is the 7:04 that I used to take?! Why did they eliminate MY bus?! It was always crowded! Now it was going to be even MORE crowded! Are they nuts??”
“I hate the new B62 and I’m outraged over their choice to slash buses per hour. The idea to cut the route in half made sense (though it’s already not working to reduce the stacked bus issue) but to cut the number of buses per hour – especially from 6 down to 4! during rush hour – is sheer idiocy on the part of the MTA.”
Y mas:
“And to think people are paying through the nose to live in Greenpoint, where residents are served by an overcrowded go-nowhere train that arrives every ten minutes or an overcrowded bus with a well-designed route that arrives every thirteen minutes. The B61 used to be my savior from the G train, going that extra ‘stop’ from Court Square to Queens Plaza that the G no longer makes, allowing me to forgive the bus when it showed up when it felt like it. Now I’m nonplussed. Thanks, MTA, for the B sixty-screw.”

Excuse me, can we please talk about bagels? Isn’t that why this site was established?
Why would anyone take that bus instead of hopping on any of the half dozen subway lines in LIC. I don’t get it.
It makes perfect sense. Northbound waits in GP for the B61 to Queens (to xfer to 7 line) were very unpredictable. And who in their right minds would take the B61 south all the way to Red Hook when there are many other subway/bus options that are faster? Go MTA!
Dividing the route in half and reducing the frequency of the service are two different issues. The word from Red Hook is that the divide has solved most of the long-standing problems at that end of the route, when two and three buses would arrive en masse south of Jay St., after passengers had been waiting twenty to thirty minutes during peak hours.
It is possible and would be unfortunate if either of these routes now had less actual buses assigned to them, but if this is the case it is an unpleasant and opportunistic attempt by the MTA to sneak in a cost-cutting save with their adjustment of the route. (One can all too easily imagine a meeting during which just such a “budgetary benefit” of making the change might have been proposed).
But the division of the old and absurdly long B61 route into two segments is in and of itself a fabulous success for those of us who complained for years about the existing route.
I take issue with this post describing the B62 route as “humble.” From downtown Brooklyn to Queens Plaza is by most measures STILL a very long route. The B61 used to run completely packed from Red Hook to Jay St., at which point 95% of the passengers disembarked to board the subway.
The MTA needs to fix this or Jay Walder needs to resign. They’re totally unresponsive to the needs of their clients. These buses are packed and vital. They need to triple the service.
And serve bagels.
I love the photo, liqcity!
This is an unacceptable assassination of a very useful and popular bus line. My commute time to work just doubled and became far more crowded. It’s an embarrassment to the concept of public transportation.
