Yeah, well, I am not really one of those “dog people”, but it was on a leash and not dressed up. It just sucks when your brother comes to town (with a dog for some reason) and it can’t go on the subway or anywhere much. It’s nice that it can just chill under your bench on the back patio at a bar and not bother anyone while you have a drink.

Off-leash bars are another scene entirely, if you ever have been to Sunny’s, Pacific Standard, etc. Kinda fun I think for the most part to watch dogs run around and play with one another and people.

Stroller Mom, the problem with your comment is that this post is about the upcoming events and happenings in our neighborhood and has nothing to do with making LIC businesses stroller/wheelchair accessible. I would suggest that, instead of making a random comment to business owners here, you speak directly to the business owners themselves. I am sure that they would be more than happy to listen and probably even accommodate your request.

On a more relevant note, I would encourage people to sign up for the LIC CSA – we’ve received great produce so far and it’s a really great deal if you’re interested in fresh organic veggies and greens every month.

We also went to the nightly 10 pm dog party at the Murray Playground dog park. That was sort of fun.

I didn’t mean to sound like I was making demands of any kind-I am not a baby, as someone suggested. It was really just a simple, inexpensive suggestion that is welcoming and helpful, not just to stroller moms, but to disabled persons and even delivery people.

However, if I were to make a demand, it would be to our local Post Office which is not wheelchair accessible. I think that is an outrage- it is a public building and should comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Anyways, sorry to have high-jacked this posting for this topic, but if any business out there is listening, we would greatly appreciate your efforts to address this (especially those who offer children services).

That’s it for me. This mom is going out for a stroll…over and out.

Speaking of dogs, my little brother is visiting with his puppy for a few days. We went to the dog park in Murray Playground. Any bars that allow dogs around here or do we have to walk to Greenpoint?

No. I’m #2 and I love the greenmarket. I shop there every weekend and wish it was bigger. What I don’t like is walking by stores in the middle of the summer who have their doors open and the AC blasting. Talk about a waste of energy.

So please, go to the greenmarket, get rid of your car, leave a door-stop outside and hold the door for nice ladies and their strollers (assuming she didn’t try to run you off the sidewalk with it.)

The brokers and spin mysters have been selling LIC as the next hip , up and coming international grooovey spot! But the the fact is….to much happened too quick with out a chance for natural evolution. What seems to be shaking out….(in my opinion only) is that the majority of new folks are, in order 1. families, 2. dog owners, 3. Asians. And of course a lot of those categories overlap.

Anyone like to chime in with out attacking me?

My point being….the lady is right. Store owners can either listen or not…she is just a part of a very large and growing demographic.

Ok so we’ve devolved to attacking moms with strollers and handicap people? Where will it end? LIC is definitely experiencing a baby boom. It would not hurt business owners to make an effort to accommodate families. And if anyone has never carted a baby around (on person or in a stroller) this city, then you have no idea what a hassle it is, and how ‘unfriendly’ businesses can inadvertently be to some of their most needed customers.

Stroller mom also mentioned something else to consider before you take aim at her request – people with disabilities. Doors that cannot be propped open also put people in wheelchairs or those who use walkers at a disadvantage when entering stores. Due to 2 hip replacements and a rod in my femur, I use a rollator(that’s a walker on wheels with a seat) for support on the streets. I often have to wait for “the kindness of strangers” when trying to enter many of our stores and restaurants.

As for #4, you obviously don’t know anything about being a single mom and asking for help – in this case, via a simple suggestion. In case you haven’t noticed, LIC is in the midst of a population & baby boom. This is a family friendly neighborhood.

To 2/4, would you give this woman a break? Christ, I can think of plenty things more annoying in public right now than a neighbor in a local store getting a few groceries with her kid.

I undersand that strollers are annoying, but I’m not going to leave mine out in the street, so someone can take it. Plus taking a baby in and out of a stroller is quite a production just to buy milk. And god forbid I need more than milk, in which case I might actually need TWO hands, but since one would be holding the baby… hmmm… and then there’s the paying part, usually requiring 2 hands as well. (If you don’t have kids, don’t throw in your 2 cents, b/c you don’t know what you’re taking about.)

But anyways, that is my point, if I can’t get into the shop/restaurant, then I won’t buy/eat there. So I am suggesting making it easier for parents with strollers (and people with wheelchairs) to pass through a door.

It’s just a door stop at the bottom of the door, the kind that one can easily flip up and down with your foot.

How about leaving the stroller outside and carrying your child (if they’re too small to walk) or else let them out of the stroller for a walk? No offence; I like kids but strollers in small spaces (such as store aisles) can be annoying, especially if the need is not obvious.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear. A door stopper to hold the door while getting in and out – not to ALWAYS keep the door open. It’s very hard to open doors with one hand while maneuvering the stroller with the other hand. And although I appreciate your offering to hold the door, it is not common practice for people to do so.

It’s just a small suggestion.

To any retailers/venues/restaurants/etc out there:
It would be sooo much easier to attend events and/or visit your shops, if you only installed a door stopper so that we, stroller moms, could actually get in w/o getting caught in the door.

It’s a simple request, but it makes all the difference.
