Long Island City event round-up; December 21st-27th

Holiday lights on Vernon Blvd and 33rd Road, Long Island City

As you might imagine, with the late December holidays and Christmas this week, events are looking a little light. There are a ton of art shows and events continuing and coming up in general – see below. But if you want to get your festivities on in the hood this week, check our previous post on holiday celebrations in LIC.

And once again, Happy Holidays, liQcity readers.

Continuing Events

Give the studio a try and your first class is FREE, through January 1st, 2010. Check the website for the class schedule. 27-28 Thomson Ave, Work Studio 6 (1st Floor), LIC, 718.361.5515

  • The Secret Theatre Studio presents Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ remaining dates: January 1st-3rd @ 8pm. “‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ in Winter? Emphatically, yes [...] in director Katherine M. Carter’s energetic new staging of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic comedy.” Tickets $15, also available online. 44-02 23rd St, LIC, 718.392.0722

  • Now playing at the Secret Theatre: Shakespeare’s ‘Titus Andronicus,’ remaining dates: January 1st-3rd and 6th-9th @ 8pm, with matinee on Jan 2nd @ 3:30pm. “Shakespeare’s early play, ‘Titus Andronicus,’ is known as a bloody revenge tragedy, but it also addresses issues about family vs. the state, and civilization vs. savagery. Director Rich Ferraioli’s version uses a stark, minimalist aesthetic to highlight these questions.” 4402 23rd St, LIC, 718.392.0722

  • ‘In Time For The Holidays’ at AES Gallery in cooperation with Modern Art Foundry and RT Restorations. “Don’t miss out on your opportunity to purchase artwork priced for our economy-challenged times. Buy artwork for family, friends, and even yourself.” Through December 29th. 4402 23rd St, LIC, 718.249.9359

  • Euclidean Space at Flux Factory through December 27th. Anna So Young Han’s work “straddles the line between painting and sculpture, creating magnificent visual experiences that reference op art and hard-edge abstraction.” Hours: Saturday 12-6pm or by appt (718.707.3362). 39-31 29th St, LIC

  • New exhibition ‘Conjugation’ now on view at Space Womb gallery through December 26th. Hours: Thurs-Mon 12pm-6:30pm, Tues & Wed by appointment only. 22-48 Jackson Ave, LIC, 917.670.1342

  • Lauren Petty and Shaun Irons’ ‘Revolving Twilight’ at Chocolate Factory Theater on view through January 16, 2010: “an immersive video/sound installation inspired in part by tales from nautical lore, notions of optical phenomena and illusion, and neurological case studies exploring mental and visual perception, fragmented or dwindling memory, and cognitive disruptions.” 5-49 49th Ave, LIC, 718.482.7069

  • Photography exhibition at Court Square Wines & Spirits featuring the work of LIC resident Orestes Gonzales, running through January 30th. Pieces are also on sale for $100 each. 2420 Jackson Ave, LIC, 718.707.9911

  • Josh Smith’s On The Water now on view at Deitch Project through March 28th, 2010. Smith painted 47 paintings directly on the wall to “create a show of paintings that looked like something else. The intention was to make ‘art without an art object’ and to take the commodity out of the art.” 4-40 44th Drive, LIC

  • Socrates Sculpture Park‘s EAF 09: Emerging Artist Fellowship Exhibition is on view through March 2010, featuring 16 artists awarded fellowships with the Park to create and exhibit their work in the outdoor studio. 32-01 Vernon Blvd (@ Broadway), LIC, 718.956.1819

Upcoming Events

  • P.S. 1 presents Saturday Sessions, a new program of emerging performance art that will take place on the second Saturday of each month; January 9th features Jibade-Khalil Huffman and Desi Santiago, in conjunction with open studios and discussions with participants in Rising Currents: Projects for New York’s Waterfront, 4-6pm.

  • Opening reception of Leopards in the Temple at SculptureCenter on January 10th, 5-7pm. Named after the Franz Kafka parable, “the group exhibition of the same name [featuring a number of increasingly prominent European artists] focuses on moments of metamorphosis, paradox, and formal adjacency, borrowing from the parable an ability to promote multiple readings of succinct forms and extraordinary occurrences.”

  • Upcoming performances at Green Space Dance Studio: Take Root on January 23rd at 8:30pm (tickets $15) featuring Dana Salisbury’s unique ‘Unseen Dance,’ dance for a blindfolded audience: “Dancers reveal themselves and define speed, space, location, distance, architecture and bodily effort through sound, touch, vibration, and air currents.” On January 24th: Fertile Ground new works series at 7pm (tickets $10) featuring Brittany Antle, John Zullo, Esmé Boyce, Marie Consuelo, and Barbara Mahler followed by a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese.

I think we can confidently say, without any fear of offending any non-Christians, that the photograph depicts Christmas lights, and not “holiday lights.”

I’m all in favor of being inclusive, especially during this evidently hand-wringing time for those in the PC camp, and don’t mind the use of “holiday” for secular or government-funded displays. But I think we go too far when we misrepresent a private homeowner’s obvious Christmas display for fear of possibly hurting someone’s feelings.

Believe it or not, the day still has special religious meaning for some of us and don’t appreciate it being consistently and subtly downgraded.

Merry Christmas. And if you aren’t a believer, have a healthy and prosperous Happy New Year.
