I am new to this blog and the neighborhood. Can anyone tell me if there is a good gay bar in the area?
there are some great bars in the area, not sure about gay bars though…
Not yet.
There needs to be a good gay bar. That way a lady can go and get a drink without being hassled by all the lonely men of LIC. Straight men. Gay men in LIC do not seem lonely. Though they are without a bar of their own.
There are a some gay bars 2 stops east on the E train in Jackson Heights. Not sure about Astoria, Sunnyside, or Greenpoint.
Apologies for the miss-post about Art-o-Mat’s opening. It was last week. Sorry folks, that was an oversite. Go see Art-o-Mat’s Zeitgeist exhibit!
We also added the Deitch Studios new exhibition opening on Sat. Check it out. 80+degrees and sunny this Sat – excellent for wandering around the waterfront and checking out wacky art.
Cheers – liQcity
I am always thinking of what businesses would make this neighborhood EVEN better. And I think we’re onto something: a good gay bar!
Maybe Dutch Kills will be gay? Are they open yet?
what exactly makes a gay bar different from any other kind of bar?
gay people, you idiot!
$15 drinks. Lol
It wouldn’t be hard to kind of turn a bar into a gay bar/night. Like, if all the gay folks in the ‘hood decided “let’s always hang out at Dominie’s Hoek on Thursday nights” or something. Make it happen if you want.
Are there enough gay men in LIC? A gay night might suffice. Which would be the best bar to host it?
There are gay men in LIC for sure. With dogs.
#10 – A gay bar is usually open to all, but specifically a place for gay people to meet and connect. And men & women have their own treehouses. Women in male gay bars tend to be FagHags (we love you!), so they tend to have Lesbian bars. Which I call dyke bars and if you are offended well don’t be.
I suggest a monthly gay LIC meet-up night. Maybe liqcity you could organize one for us?
Yuck. NYC is so tribal.
Tribal?
Yeah #17, whaterutalkinabout?
is it because we’re distinguishing gay from straight?
so #11…are you saying that gay people only go to gay bars? That’s the only reason I ask what makes a gay bar? I don’t think I’m being an idiot…
thanks #16
you’re right. I shouldn’t have called you an idiot…it sounded much harsher in writing, than it did in my head. I guess I just thought it was odd that someone didn’t know what a gay bar was. Although, it sounds like you were genuinely questioning the difference. mia culpa!
It’s basically the same thing as bars that are dominated by yuppies, hipsters, sports-watchers, Latinos, old dudes, college kids, or any other type of category… people, in general, like hanging with their own peeps pretty often, for better or worse.
I’m not even gay… but it doesn’t take anything to organize a night. Just pick one at a bar you like, tell people in the comments to show up starting next week, and I’m sure LIQcity can mention it, and maybe email other websites in the ‘hood like LICNYC too and try to spread the word. See what happens.
You’d probably have the run of the Shannon Pot, and it’s centrally-located from all corners of LIC and on multple trains.
Yes, there are gay people living in LIC. We live everywhere on the planet by the way. A gay LIC meet-up would be great. Name the time and the place.
Dominie’s Hoek, Tuesday, 8 pm.
