What is the most widely accepted usage? Is it Queensboro Bridge, Queensborough Bridge or 59th Street Bridge?
I think Queensboro. That’s the name on the actual bridge after all. 59th street bridge is just manhattan-centric.
Not just ” manhattan-centric”. After all, Simon and Garfunkel were from Corona and Forest Hills.
Does anyone know how they’ll go about doing the Taste of LIC at Gantry State Park? Like where exactly in the park will they hold it? Will they fence an area off? Or will it be at the new part of the park that has yet to open?
also this weekend is:
LIC CSA Meet & Greet
Saturday May 30th 2-3:30pm

(Room A, 2nd Floor)
37-44 21st Street
Long Island City NY 11101
Meet farmers, mingle with members, cooking demos and more!!
Also LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP FOR LIC CSA membership in person!!
#5 I think they are setting up a tent in the main space of the “old” park. Usually when there are private events there, you can still wander around the piers and probably also the new park.
Who wants to take the over/under about when the new section of park will open? Seems almost ready, but who knows?
Does anyone know when the Sat morning farmer’s market starts up again? I thought it was Memorial Day weekend, but didn’t happen.
I hope it does not come back. The selection is weak and the quality is low. I would rather be able to park my car on Sat mornings.
Please could you add this to
your art events in Long Island City!Thank you!

The Green Market will be returning Saturday July11th. It always opens the first Saturday after the Fourth of July. If you are shopping for fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit there is always a good selection..plus poultry and beef. This is a small scale market run by the same org. that hosts the full scale market in Union Square. Customer loyalty will help the market to grow. I remember the original opening day in Union Square many years ago–just a handful of vendors — and boy–look at it now!!!!
#10, you would rather be able to park in 1 of maybe 10 spots instead of having a developing local farmers market and supporting the area? Here’s an idea, find a parking spot on Friday and don’t shop there if you don’t like it.
The farmers market on Vernon? July – November
Shavuot activities this week at JCC-Chabad of LIC/Astoria.

I love the farmer’s market – it gives the neighborhood a great vibe on Sat mornings. And they sell a great quiche there. The market will get better each year, if we continue supporting it.
Support the Market it is good for our neighborhood.
Quiche? Even farmer’s markets can’t escape the scourge of the yuppie.
#18 why such the disdain for quiche? I have been eating it for the past 40 years. It was a staple of my childhood. It is not a “Yuppie” food. It is cheap and simple to make: pie crust, eggs, dairy(milk, cream or 1/2&1/2), cheese and anything else you want to put in it.
I recommended the quiche and no one who knows me would ever describe me as a yuppie. Keep your ignorant sterotypes to yourself.
I LOVE the farmer’s market. Probably my favorite thing in the neighborhood!!!
I am commenter #12 – Thank you #’s 16 thru 20. I am a board member of HPCDC, and it was through our efforts that we were able to get the Green Market to set up a local market here. Now it is up to the community to support the market by shopping there and buying the produce. The reason that Green Market has reserved the entire length of 48th Ave. is their confidence in the fact that this growing community will be able to support a larger market. It opens in July which is the beginning of the season for local produce such as corn, tomatoes etc. When they tried an early opening in May, people did not seem to understand that there is a limited local supply at that time –anyone who grew up with a garden knows that you get wonderful tender things at that t ime of year such as garden lettuce, early radishes, ramps, asparagus etc., but that and root vegetables were not enough to sustain a small market –so they went back to the July opening which continues through the harvest season. So, I urge you to buy the fresh local produce and get that wonderful burst of flavor that you only get from a really fresh ear of corn or a field ripened tomato. And yes the quiches are wonderful good For one time only I will sign my real name
See you at the market!
Rene
And a nod to @ 21 too! You must have come in while I was entering my lengthy response. By the way – I grew up in PA – not on a farm – but with a Dad who grew a garden that sustained us from end of April thru November –with root vegetables and my mother’s home canned goods to get us thru the winter. We didn’t have enough space for corn, but Daddy bought that from a farmer who picked it fresh for him –and we had to eat it that evening; otherwise, Daddy considered it stale!
Just sayin’
Rene
The end of 11th st at the QB bridge has been practically blocked for about a week. Last week I thought it was a film shoot with all the trucks (also full of odd mannequins and drycleaning in bags?) Now it’s cops and you can’t get by there. Anybody know if this is bridge realted or movie related.
I wish you had the market now for fresh things like rhubarb, strawberries and flowers!
#10 here. I don’t know. I don’t really see it as an amenity as much as it is a nuisance. Supporting local farmers is nice and all, but there is nothing there that I can’t get from any of a number of stores within walking distance. I’d rather that they continued the potted planters on 48th all the way down to vernon instead of trying to make the block into some sort of open air flea market.
Great place for an open air market. Or maybe one day a nice block party type deal.
What’s wrong, 10/26, don’t you like organic farm-raised quiche?
#10/26…HUGE nuisance is right! With the farmers market, there is no parking anywhere…those dozen cars that can’t park there take up all the remaining parking spots in the rockrose, avalon and citylights buildings! And with that side of the street closed, traffic is gridlocked for miles! Don’t even get me started about all the noise the farmers market produces!
#10&26 – If your taste buds do not detect the difference between freshly picked corn, field ripened tomatoes and other really fresh produce and “shipped in not-so-fresh produce”, then I suggest you go on shopping elsewhere!!! In the meantime, don’t put down the Green Market just because you want a convenient parking spot for the weekend–that seems to be your main gripe!! By the way, the planters can co-exist with the market –That extension of plantings in the center has already been under consideration and discussion for quite some time. Also, a Farmers Market can hardly be called “an open air Flea Market”. Also, if you visit the schoolyard on Columbus Ae. on any Sunday, you will find the Green Market and a crafts & antique market existing together quite nicely – also on the East Side on Saturdays in a schoolyard. It’s time to get over yourself!
#29, don’t be stupid. Parking is only one aspect, but for those living near the market, I’m not so sure that they would be thrilled with the prospect of this becoming like Union squares market. Who nominated themselves to decide that this was best for the neighborhood and why aren’t these decisions exposed to the light of day? When it expands to take up the entire block as planned why should anyone be subjected to the noise and trucks early on Saturday morning or being unable to have packages brought in due to the street being closed, or the trash left behind, etc. All of this in the name of mediocre produce?
Oh stop #29, the garages you mentioned are *not* filled up by the cars that would have parked where the farmer’s market sets up. There are hundreds of spot left in those combined garages!!
#32…it’s called sarcasm.
#31, I live near the market and I have no fear of it becoming the size of union squares market. But if it does and there’s a concern over the noise, trucks and trash, who’s to say that they can’t find a better location in the area? These are tents that people pop up for the market, not brick and mortar…they CAN be moved. But the chances of it becoming that big in the next few years is very slim. And if you find the produce mediocre, that’s fine, don’t shop there, but not everyone shares your opinion.
I can’t believe what I’m reading. There are actually people who DON”T want a greenmarket in their neighborhood? NY wankers really love to complain about everything.
#31 – No one “nominated themselves” to determine where the market would be located. The site and the desire for a market were determined through a neighborhood petition, plus meetings and tours of the area with Green Market personnel before a final decision was reached. The Green Market does not deter any deliveries to surrounding buildings – 5sl is on the open to traffic side of the street and the Gantry has its entrance on 5th St. The closed side of 48th Ave. has only the park and the basketball court. I think that the late at night activity in the basketball courts creates a lot more noise than the farmers who happen to be there once a week during daylight hours! And, as I said before, if you find it to be a mediocre product, shop elsewhere. I would much rather have a young sweet carrot or radish freshly pulled from the earth with roots and dirt than an old neatly manicured one.
35, we would all rather have young sweet carrots than bitter old crabs like 31.
Very few people might not like having the Greenmarket but if you look around any good neighborhood in NYC has some sort of Greenmarket and if they don’t they are petitioning for one. So feel free not to like having a Greenmarket but rest assure that you are in a very small minority. If this market becomes the same size of the one in Union Sq. the noise of the market will be the least of your problems. This is because the population and housing stock in the area would have multiplied by ten fold for that to happen.
#’s 16,17,19,20,21,33,34,36,37 – Thank you for your supportive comments. I am #’s 12,22,23,30,31,35 – aka Rene
Perhaps the market will never grow to the size of Union Square, but it will get bigger and better with your continued support! It’s true @37 – There are neighborhoods longing for a branch of the Green Market, and they all have to go through the process of garnering the signatures of a required amount of interested parties via a petition in order to be even considered as a viable applicant. After that, the Green Market then goes through the process of checking locations in the neighborhood that are suitable for the trucks and the stands to be set up plus studying the demographics of the neighborhood as to population etc. It didn’t happen overnight – a lot of hard work and effort was put into bringing it to fruition. Now, as we enter our fourth year, let’s wish our farmers a great growing season – with sunshine & showers – but no drought or floods!
See you 7/11
Rene
oops – I meant sixth year! Tempus fugit!

Anyone know what the deal was with Art-O-Mat today? Tried to go there to make a few purchases, and it looks nearly shut down already. Door locked, lights out, etc.
They are probably dismantling and moving out –The 31st is Sunday
The greenmarket blocks the light and air and it should go.
I heard on ny1 that the fireworks show will be fired by a long island city native born and raised. I have always been amazed by the artist of Grucci and the work they have done with Cai Guo Qiang.
1010 wins said ” a special effects master ” from long island city but I did not hear born and raised. But, I am sure nobody in Long Island City worked with Cai, the man had his artwork in the Guggenheim.
#44-”sure,” are you? Are you, like, psychic or anything?
And because of that it means that no one in LIC could have worked with him? Now that is an elitist remark. Did you ever hear of Romare Bearden? Look him up. He had his studio here in LIC.
#’s 43 thru 46 -Let me give you a hint. I suggest you check out Delta Force Army/Navy Store
Like I don’t know, anonymous.
#40- Art-O-Mat is not usually open on Thursday. This is the last weekend. It will be open on Friday-Sunday. Try again if you have the time!
Hi, townie – I guess I was mostly addressing #’s43 & 44 – They seemed to be absolutely clueless!
And yes, 43 & 44 – This particular native son of LIC was on the Grucci team that went to Beijiing and developed the fireworks that the Chinese eventually tried to copy for the Olympics opening ceremonies. Grucci issued a public statement as to why they pulled out of the show.
I wish the greenmarket was closer to Court Square, but its nice to have one around.
I went to buy a medium-sized butternut squash last fall IN SEASON and it was 6 dollars. Come on.
The area in front of the Courthouse would be a great spot for the greenmarket, now that you bring it up.
Good idea #54! I like that space for a greenmarket and no parking would be lost or streets need to be closed.
Only thing with that area though is that’s it’s more a commercial location, with not many residents living there compared to it’s current location.
Court Square does have a lot better transit access, though… much more centrally located to the rest of LIC as well. But yeah I’m guessing they put it over where it is due to all the new towers nearby. It would probably have to be on the street adjacent to the park itself, though… although maybe there is enough paved surface in front of the steps to do it there.
I don’t think this parking situation is a major concern, though. Use Zipcar or stop complaining… LIC has way more parking than most NYC neighborhoods.
The current location is much more central to the highest density of residential bldngs- including waterfront and the surrounding community. It’s not as though Court Square is that far from the Vernon location. It’s not as far as people travel in the city to go to Union Square. If you don’t want to walk for 10 minutes or bike from Court Square, it’s only one subway stop away! And just where would you place the trucks and the stands? The market also determines that the trucks have to be on a surface that cannot be damaged by their weight. For example, at the Columbus Ave. schoolyard, they determined that only one area at the upper end of the yard could be used, because there is an underground stream that runs through the main portion of the yard, and they feared that the ground could not support the weight of the trucks. It’s nice to “pipe dream”, but as I said before, there are many considerations before a decision is reached. So, why not get a little exercise on a Saturday morning and hike on over. No one seems to consider it a hardship to come over here for a night at LICBAR, Dominies or WTB!
#57, sure, its not that far. I just prefer to avoid the Vernon scene as much as possible (bars included!)
As a long-time resident, it’s so funny to hear someone complain about a “Vernon scene”! Never thought I’d see the day our quiet little neighborhood became a spot for trendy bar hoppers.
HA! The “Vernon Scene”… What exactly do you mean? The bars here are great and they aren’t over crowded or over priced.
Yes, @58 – What is this “Vernon Scene” that you speak of?? Is it something visible that precludes you from traveling west of Jackson on a quiet Saturday morning??? Or perhaps its an invisible force that drives you back as soon as you cross Jackson and head in this direction?? Please explain!
Just curious to know.
If anyone is bored, I wish they’d do an inventory of the parking garages. They’re all empty! Citilights is probably the fullest but you can always get a spot there on weekends (weekdays, I think the school employees use it). So, I don’t want to hear crap about the parking.
Maybe we should figure out how many non-LICers are parking on the street during the week. Did you know that UN people park their cars on our streets? Did you know that some people drive from other parts of Queens and then park? Why isn’t anyone having an issue with this?
I am sad that Art-O-Mat is closing- it just couldn’t survive on just volunteers. It was such a great space! Does anyone know if the LIC stuff will be sold at other stores??
We should all be supporting local farmers. That being said, the greenmarket in LIC has some serious obstacles, and some true downsides. It is too expensive. Unavoidable really, since it’s not patronized very much and vendors have to jack prices to make any money. They need to do some serious local public outreach to get people there, and make it worth the farmer’s time. There was a GREAT fishmonger coming every other Sat and it was very affordable and superfresh. And clean. But he said other greenmarkets like sunnyside and JH are much more worth his time… We have no fresh fish in LIC, and don’t even try to count that pre-frozen overpriced crap at foodcellar.
“Vernon scene” = “Hoboken scene”
I am worried that foodcellar will harm the greenmarket’s draw, too… lots of crossover audience, no?
No matter what Green Market you go to -whether it be Union Square or an outpost – fresh organic produce from small farms will always be pricier than supermarket prices. I would rather pay that price for the in-season produce and spend less in the winter when I am forced to buy the “shipped in” varieties.
Tender broccoli at the the Green Market is 100 times more desirable than the 89cents a bunch that I have to eat during the winter(like the ever available “AndyBoy”). I’m sorry to hear about the fishmonger — Frankly, we just need more of the populaton here taking advantage of a good thing!!!! John the beef man has been confronted with the same problem. Of course, natural grass fed beef costs more than mass produced –but people do not see the difference until they have tried it and many people don’t even bother to try. They just “turn up their noses” at the price. I know how tough a sell it is,because I ran John’s stand for him for 2 summers. People who tried it once always became loyal customers. He does great business in Union Square and GM out posts including Greenpoint and Inwood – but finds a wall of resistance here.
Rene
So, someone told me that at farmer’s markets in NYC the people running the stands aren’t the actual farmers and their families usually? True, I take it?
That’s sort of a bummer because they always seem to make part of the marketing about knowing/interacting with the person producing your food.
#67 For the most part you will find the farmers and their families working their stands. There are producers who do not have enough family members to work multiple stands, and they might train people to work them — just as would happen in any business. Usually the people they hire are farm hands, friends of the family or people who have grown up in an agricultural area. In my case, I was well tutored by John before I took on the responsibility of selling his product. I grew up in the country and know quite a bit about farming and produce, but I definitely needed some education in order to sell meat – like various cuts and how to explain what grass fed beef was all about etc.
Rene
Did they eat all the grass?
I have it from a good source that the so-called farmers buy their produce from supermarkets and pass them off as organic to unsuspecting yuppies in the towers who are willing to pay 3x retail for it.
Here you can see some of the shots that I took from the fireworks for the Queensborough Birdge!
