Long Island City to Dubya: Drop Dead. Queens marches on.

Hunters Point, Long Island City

Hunters Point North Pole, Long Island City

Not that Dubya! This one. Oh yes, more news from the MTA and it’s just as peachy as ever. The beleaguered and unloved Dubya (the W train is really called that) is following the suit of its namesake and leaving us forever. They held a mock funeral downtown for the demise of the Z train. Mourners cried out for the loss of the crosstown M8. But no love for the death of Dubya.

Queens, however, is moving forward (without Dubya), says borough president Helen Marshall:

With the city’s capital budget “battered and stretched by credit crunches and the losses by many of our financial institutions,” Marshall spent much of the 90-minute speech on several major redevelopment projects planned across Queens, including at Willets Point near Flushing and Hunters Point South on the East River in Long Island City.

Combined, those two projects are expected to create more than 10,000 housing units, a convention center, retail space, community facilities and two schools, according to Marshall. “It has been said that construction is the engine that drives the economy,” she said. “In this ailing economy, we can create jobs, we can build housing and we can boost businesses. Naysayers beware, we will move forward.”

10000 units means 50,000 people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

are you guys nuts? where is the hospitals, schools, streets, power plants, etc

who is going to pay for this? my kids are already in crowded schools and my streets are already filthy – you can hardly see the bike lanes with the filth.

you developers live in a dream world like wall street and its about to come crashing down.

Too many of us here in Queens are victims of government’s failure to provide viable mass transit options,” Marshall said.

So you still ad 10,000s of people? The politicans no longer care about our communities.

They have turned our city over to you developers.

They should eract a platform over Sunnyside Yards and build there. That would be a boon to the area. Its has great transportation and is close to the city.

The title is funny. Nice one LIQ! I wonder if people are educated enough in NYC history to get the joke.

Construction is not the only force that drives the economy. Marshall’s being very myopic. Like they’re going to be able to get the money from the banks for city development anyway. That “joke” in LIQcity’s title is actually a reference to the last time the city went under financially. Remember anyone? The banks stopped lending to even the good ol’ city of NYC. Ford told us to drop dead, but then he decided to bail us out because the potential of domino collapses in other cities. Sound familiar?

5, but the bailout only happened after much misery in NYC, far, far worse than what is being witnessed even today. There’s a whole generation of people in NYC, including so many of the entitled yuppies enjoying their $15 cocktails, who haven’t a clue what awaits them when things finally hit the fan.

Roof over the Sunnyside Yards and you can kiss goodby to western Queens. It would be like Co-op City.

Only those nit-wits over at Dutch Kills Civic would agree to that.

Don’t worry about them putting a roof over the Sunnyside yards, the state/city/borough have no money for anything, much less something like that!

when things hit the fan you have 2 $15 drinks neat….

#9 Anonymous / 1 year, 1 month ago

better hurry before they become $18 drinks……………

#10 Anonymous / 1 year, 1 month ago

The drinks at Dutch Kills bar are going to be around $8/10 for cocktails… not $15.

What about McReilly’s, anyone heard anything?

Why is it that every serious discussion about LIC devolves into bar talk?

Today’s NY Times had a story about how Hunters Point is cut off with the 7 work.

Ravenswood is keeping it real. From the NY Post NYPD Blotter:

“Queens

* Tuesday from nearby eateries, for delivery to the Ravenswood Houses, cops said.

The deliverymen were put in choke-holds, beaten and robbed, police said.

Navarro and Mays were arrested Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. after allegedly robbing a deliveryman at 37th Avenue and 23rd Street, authorities said. Edwards and King were arrested yesterday.”
