Pause for station identification: commenting on liQcity

Hey there liQcity readers. There comes a time in all blogs (maybe) where the blogger has to make some decisions about editing comments. In general, I’m opposed to editing comments as I believe in free speech yada yada yada. However, in a circumstance such as a neighborhood blog where the community is very small-town like, and the real estate community even smaller - there are other factors to consider. Thereby, liQcity is crafting an editorial policy which shall soon be posted. In the meantime, please refer to the following:

liQcity will not pre-screen comments. All comments posted will display live immediately. liQcity will remove comments that are blatantly homophobic, racist or personally attack a LIC community member by name (or clear description). All other comments are welcome and appreciated, cranky or happy. We seem to have some happy hipsters and even happier yuppies commenting on the site, so bring it.

As a side note, liQcity welcomes dissent as it is a critical component of what we hold near and dear to our hearts(?) in the democratic(?) process. Dissent away.

It’s OK to object to stupid people. :)

Object to stupid people all you want. If they live in the hood though, and/or have a presence in the community, just leave their name out of it. It’s a little too close to home. And it’s surprising that it’s been happening enough to create a policy around it. There’s more of that then spam. I think it’s fine to be critical of developers, businesses, organizations, even community people/politicos etc… but there is a line that can be crossed, and though it’s hard to define, it’s clear when crossed. Kind of like how people feel about porn. They can’t always necessarily articulate what it is, but they know it when they see it. And then on top of that, it’s subjective.

Ever think of disallowing anonymous comments? I feel like I’m one of 3 people who actually post under a consistent name.

No, I mean what will that really stop? People will just make up random names as they do anyway, and anonymous commenting is the easiest and ’safest’ for people. The other alternative is to require login, which makes sense if there’s an out of control spam issue.

The depressing reality of blog culture is that an essentially anonymous forum will invariably attract outlandish comments, which sometime go over the line of civil discourse. I support your editorial decision to delete comments which attack named individuals. I love your site!

I love this site too!

You’ve unseated QueensWest as the blog/messageboard of choice for Hunters Point.

1. QW is not a blog.
2. Many people are responding here because they can hide behind “anonymous”.
3. On QW (a website) people have to register and have identities.

liQcity aims to unseat no one, and fully respects and appreciates the message boards of QueensWest. Thanks for all the positive feedback though!

QW was always fun to read for local news and POV and probably will be again, now that the two biggest mooks have taken their beef to Curbed (cf. Arris Hookers (anon) vs Shitty Lights (anon)).

If you recall, that was one person and he had a name on QW. He lives at Arris. His sole purpose was (and still is) to antagonize.

I liked to read the QW site too. But it seems dead lately and not just because that loudmouth guy is gone. What’s going on?

QW = way too slow to use. I rarely bother anymore. Plus, it’s named “Queens West” which is a fake real estate neighborhood name if I ever heard one. Hunters Point, ‘natch.

I used to post on QW too, but never go there anymore because it feels so stale, and there’s no fresh news. And it’s super slow. I feel this site is more about the neighborhood than just about the high rises–which is why i moved here–the neighborhood!
