5pointz on lock-down; No fireworks this year for Long Island City

Last years fireworks viewed from Long Island City –photo

Since the disastrous collapse of an external stairwell, the Crane Street Studios inside what is more famously known as the 5pointz building, are still on mandatory vacate order by the City. The artists in residence are suffering great losses professionally and are asking supporters to sign a petition encouraging the City to allow the artists to access and remain the studios. In case anyone is wondering about the condition of the woman who was on the stairwell when it collapsed, she is alive and still in serious recovery.

In other LIC news, the annual Macy’s 4th of July fireworks are going to be held on the Hudson River this year, shafting Long Island City out of it’s usual glorious perch.

And the critics seem to be liking Dutch Kills Bar.

Why would anyone sign a petition to allow people to go back to work in an unsafe building? Who’ll be liable if another part of the building falls apart when they’re back?

Petraske’s bar is a hit. LIC is the next Lower East Side.

#3, that would be sweet. Someone just needs to open a place like the Cake Shop next.

DK is exactly what LIC need more of – destination site where people come to LIC to specifically for. i would be nice to see that area turn into something like what happened in the meatpacking district.

“i would be nice to see that area turn into something like what happened in the meatpacking district.”

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Manhattan residents DO not come to Queens to party or hang out. They might venture over for curiosities sake but will not be consistenly be back.

The Meatpacking District was/is happening because of its location. Namely, Manhattan. :)

Let’s not kid ourselves, LIC is a cool place, but it should strive to be at least as busy as Astoria for a nightlife before having city aspirations.

No one went to the Lower East Side before it was the LES. No one went to Williamsburg before it was Williamsburg. NYC is ALWAYS on the hunt for the new next thing.

It may happen here, it may not. Who cares.

8, no one went to the Lower East Side before it was discovered by a bunch of nitwits from the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio? No one went to W’burg? What the hell are you talking about? I think I also just threw up a lot in my mouth.

Meh.

It won’t happen here… Brooklyn residents won’t even come here for the most part, and Manhattanites have an even bigger borough-border mentality. It’ll just keep moving along the L line further east… until East New York kicks its ass eventually?

In any case, I went to Dutch Kills last night. I’m not a “foodie” or know about the “who’s who of the cocktail world.” I’d never heard of Sasha Petraske before this, nor do I know about celebrity chefs or wait to read the weekly restaurant opening news with baited breath. I cannot write with breathless prose about the shape of the hand-cut ice or quality of the bitters. I don’t use the word “mixologist” in normal coversation, nor am I sure it is an actual word.

With that caveat: I liked the place. It was dark. Nice booths which would be good for a date or a small group of friends. $9 is more than I’d normally pay for a drink, but they have some interesting Queens- and Dutch- themed cocktails. Totally tasty thing to sip and feel civilized. Good service. The back room with sawdust and the bar are nice. Generally its a really simple setup with traditional decor… if this is “trendy” then I prefer this sort of trend to the cheesy modern-design joints that seem to be around… this feels homey and comfortable more than pretentious and flashy. I probably can’t afford to go there in lieu of the Shannon Pot all the time, but I hear they’ll be adding beers at some point, which may make it a pretty competitive choice for those of us who live on the east side of Hunters Point or Queens Plaza/Dutch Kills. I am not fully sure I get the “hype”… I’ve been to lots of other great bars in this city, some of them as “nice” as this, but the place was packed on a weeknight, with every booth full.

#9, I’m not number 8, but what is your problem? LES and Williamsburg weren’t always popular late night destinations. I don’t think there is anything puke-worthy about that.

#12 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

I thought they offered beer. About 2 or 3. So they have no beer whatsoever?

#13 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

Who drinks beer anyway? Are you at a college frat party or a fine drinking establishment?

#14 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

Yes, DK is a cocktail bar, not a beer pub.

#15 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

A bar is a bar. Even the finest wine bar offers beer or cocktails. A place can’t survive without more than just one thing.

Welcome to living in the boroughs!

#16 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

I think they will have beer at some point. Just not yet. Get over yourselves, cocktail dorks. Some of us just want some more affordable options.

#17 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

so would it be not cool to as for jaeger bombs?

#18 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

Their drinks are SO good. Why you would ever drink a jaeger bomb I don’t know. Stick with the dirty pubs you go to. Don’t infest Dutch Kills with your dirtiness.

12, you also don’t know anything about NYC. Both of those neighborhoods have long been historically busy areas long before dumbass hipsters or Wall Street wankers arrived. The fact that middle-class white geeks like yourself (and I’m guessing that this is what you are) didn’t hang out in droves there isn’t the same as saying “people” didn’t hang out/live/work/shop there.

DUDEZ LETS TOTES ALL DO IRISH CAR BOMBS AT DUTCH KILLS 2NITE, BRO!

AND SEX-ON-THE-BEACH FOR THE LADIEZ.

DON’T WORRY, I’LL SHOWER in AXE BODY SPRAY.

#21 let’s leave the Italians out of this.

#22 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

You know what the problem is with all hipsters and most wankers that move to LIC. They really have no sense of humor about anyhting.

#23 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

#23, I think the few “hipsters” are the only ones having a sense of humor in this thread.

#24 Anonymous / 1 year, 2 months ago

They have beer; three different kinds when I was there Saturday night.
