Don’t Cry for Me LIC: Plans for huge Strip Club on 21st St are dead

“Plans to open a large adult entertainment establishment near the entrance to the Queensboro Bridge in Long Island City were abandoned last week. The proposed establishment was to have featured lap dances, 13 private rooms and several stages and bars. With a main floor of 8,000 square feet, plus a mezzanine level, the club would have accommodated 300 or more guests. It was to be open seven days a week until 4 a.m.”

AHAHHHAHAHHAHAHA. yeah right. like CB2 would ever go for a strip club. They still think there’s too many bars on Vernon. If it was left up to them we’d just have a few churches and no liquor stores. not that I want a strip club, but really what’s the big deal? there’s 2 really bad ones at QP. This at least sounds like it would have been better.

Community boards have too much power. I think they routinely violate people’s private property rights. People think they have ownership of a neighborhood; this is simply not true. If the community representatives wish to vote down a proposal from an owner of private property to develop his or her own property, the community representatives must compensate the property owner in some manner.

In addition, community boards stifle economic development. There are enough barriers to economic development as it is in this economy. Now add to that the burdens placed by the officious community boards, and the bloated city government. Its government out of control and run amok.

Also, what is wrong with a strip club? It is a perfectly legal enterprise. It should not be treated any differently than any other business. Squeamishness should not be determinative. This is NYC, not Kansas.

So I assume you’ll be completely cool when your daughter tells you she’s quitting school to become a stripper, Jake?

Sorry Jake but you don’t seem to know much about how the process works. There are basic requirements that the laws establish. These laws are voted on and enacted by State and City elected representatives. The Community Board attempts to investigate if the business appears to comply with established rules and norms. From there it either votes to “oppose” or “not oppose”. Their vote is not legally binding. It is a recommendation.

I wish they would make prostitution legal, so that prostitutes and john’s could be protected. And put it in one area in a Manhattan or hell I’d even go for Queens Plaza at this point just like in Amsterdam. Keep it controlled and regulated and legal. But it will never happen in this country. But I sure as hell do not want a strip joint in Hunters Point. Jake it isn’t a prud issue at all it’s a “element” issue It’s bad enough that I was awakened at 5 a.m. by a couple having sex in my doorway 3 weeks ago. I don’t need to encourage it as a nightly place for private tricks. If your the Jake I’m thinking of, you live in a tower, you aren’t affected by the prostitution at streetleavl and all hours of the night.
