Happy New Year Long Island City. Linkage Linkage Linkage.

liQcity is back from holiday vacation. Happy New Year dear ol’ LIC. And what a catch up on the linkage! There was so much that it’s broken down into categories. Highlights include a new moniker for inland LIC (everything but the waterfront), unicorn and swimming pool exhibits at PS1, a little robbery action at the LIC HSBC, and Borden Ave being closed at the 27th St bridge for six months.

Enjoy.

Welcome Back!!!

Is it true that there will be no No. 7 to Manhattan for the next 8 weekends?

#2 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

Yes, it’s true. Welcome to Queens.

#3 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

Great stuff as always.

How does the MTA continue to get away with screwing over LIC? I just don’t get it. The work on the No. 7 has been going on for YEARS. That entire subway line was built in the fraction of the time they’ve been picking at their ass on on their weekend project. Where’s the Queens Crapper when we need her?

Anyone check out the comedy show at the The Creek and the Cave? Is it any good?

Apparently there was a fire over the holidays somewhere? Todd P posted a video on facebook of it from his window… not sure on the address.

I spoke to MTA people (and read their brochure) and they said two weeks.

Let me know if anyone hears anything more official.

Next to the Echelon.

#9 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

Oh yes, it has been going on for years. I was working weekends in Manhattan back in 2000 and they were doing this back then.

When you have a 100+ year old subway system, this is what happens. Another reason to upgrade infrastructure BEFORE new development is encouraged.

Crapper sure does bring the idiocy quite often. Please tell what pre-infrastructure upgrades on the 7 line should have been done that would avoid all future need to perform maintenance.

#11 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

Sad that you can’t discuss something like subway service in a civilized manner without knee-jerk name calling.

I didn’t say pre-infrastructure upgrades would eliminate the need for future maintenance. But surely you must realize by now that the transit system is pretty much held together with duct tape, so to speak, and therefore the need to perform maintenance is more frequent. When it actually breaks down, it takes much longer to get it back up and running than it should, and the MTA always says that’s it’s because the infrastructure is so antiquated.

Having the LIRR connection to Grand Central in place should have pre-dated the development frenzy. The 7 line can’t take on any more people and if it were active you would have your direct connection to midtown these next 8 weekends.

#12 Queens Crapper / 3 years, 1 month ago

crapper, that was lame. The LIRR connection to Grand Central would have no effect on anything. That connection will be running through the LIRR stop by Hunters Pt Ave stop, not the LIRR stop by Vernon and Borden. If someone relying on the 7 train by Vernon and Jackson on the weekend needed to go to the Hunters Pt stop to catch the LIRR, they can just go to the E or V train and take the subway and not pay extra for the LIRR. Also, that link you posted is misleading. Service for those trains were back and up and running within a couple of months from the fire incident.
Can you please try to clear your statements by someone intelligent before you annoy people with posts on other blogs? If I really want to read uninformed opinions I’ll go look at your blog.

I drive a lot and that Borden Avenue closure is a pain when you get off the LIE at Van Dam.

#14 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

If the MTA just provided a shuttle bus to/from the No. 7 stops in Manhattan, I don’t think anyone would be bitching. I see no reasonable explanation for why riders on the No. 7 and local businesses should have to endure the inconvenience for as long as they’ve had to accommodate work on the No. 7. Years ago, they ran a shuttle bus from the 42nd St. Library to Vernon Jackson. Why can’t they do that again?

Hi commenters. There was an MTA post posted early this morning, but due to tech difficulty it did not show up until just now. For thread continuity sake, please move over to the new post to discuss the MTA service interuption. Thank you.

Does anyone have information about the Blood Drive at St. Mary’s on Sunday, January 18th? It’s not on the Red Cross site but you folks seem to know everything!

#17 Anonymous / 3 years, 1 month ago

So, if you’re stuck in Queens West for the weekend AND you want to show your community spirit- attend a local blood drive!

The blood drive is at St. Mary’s on Sunday, January 18th from 9am-2:30pm. You can sign up for spots here: https://drm.nybloodcenter.org/publicscheduler/BloodDriveLocator.aspx (put in your zipcode and scroll down to St. Mary’s Church)

It will take about an hour. While most blood drives allow for walk-ins, it is always easier to have an appointment!

Happy giving!
