Hunters Point South again; City discovers ferry service; Artists in LIC?

Long Island City Community Garden, 49th Ave, LIC
More buzzing about Hunters Point South going on. In the latest meetings, participants continued the debate around the ‘affordability’ of housing that will be allegedly created by the project. Some also voiced concern about traffic implications, lack of safety amenities included in the planning, such as fire stations and hospitals, and seemingly general myopia regarding basic infrastructure.
In other LIC news, the city is finally getting around to subsidizing ferry travel along the crazily developing waterfronts of the outer boroughs. LIC of course, is included in this plan. It would be nice if there was a designated walkway to get there… sometimes the parking lot can be a twister of cars and people sort of haphazardly getting around each other. Regardless, the ferry service is a nice way to get over to Manhattan, especially with a bicycle on a sunny spring day.
Here’s an interesting article about artist and community displacement in Williamsburg that seems relevant to LIC. Williamsburg of course is a diffierent flavor of gentrification, but we’re both industrial waterfronts transitioning into mixed affluent, residential communities… and rapidly losing the artist colonies that spirited the culture. Well LIC hasn’t quite lost them yet, but considering the news that 5pointz is eventually going to be knocked down for a glassy tower project – we’re not that far away.

great links. well done again.
Yeah, that pedestrian bridge idea is fantastic!
I would LOVE a pedestrian bridge from LIC to NYC. I would be so damn happy I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. But that would take forever…and it has to be high enough to let ships go under.
There is a walking lane over the 59st bridge dummies
Is 5pointz is going to be convereted to residential?
have you used that lane? It’s kind of dangerous.
Uh, the path over the Queensboro Bridge is fine. Loud of course, but totally sufficient.
Residential/Hotel. It’s not a conversion. They will knock it down an build a luxury tower 30-40 floors that will take an entire block. Plans have been drawn years ago. The owner was waiting for the re-zoning and to purchase “Shannon Pot” the bar which is on the corner of Jackson.
5pointz is a awesome building. Yet, inside is really run down. It’s mostly a home for sweatshops which produce t-shirts, various trinckets and knock-offs.
Wait, I’m going to the Shannon Pot in a half-hour. Ack.
I don’t know where that comment about 5Pointz not housing legitimate artists comes from. There are serious studios in there. Did you ever look at the list of people who have studios there? Not all are big artists, sure, but I know at least several who show in big galleries. You make it sound like artists won’t be displaced and 5Pointz is not real working studios. It is.
Is this true about 5points being replaced by a 40 story luxury tower? Seriously?
no. 5, I said a pedestian bridge/bikeway, from the Hunters Point waterfront right to the UN. My god, I think 80% of HP commuters who have no mobility problems would use that thing every day. The city no longer thinks big when it comes to innovative transit infrastructure. This is the kind of project we used to be known for in this city.
I commented on 5 pointz. I have been inside many times. Yes, there are many studios in 5pointz and I actually seen a few. There is also number of serious artists there. And yes, they will be displaced certainly unfortunate. However, this is a huge building and good part of it is bunch of people printing t-shirts and creating knock-off DVDs. The building’s owner didn’t file any plans with NYC yet. I think there is no timing on this project. So, 5pointz can still be around in 10 years.
“However, this is a huge building and good part of it is bunch of people printing t-shirts and creating knock-off DVDs.”
This explains the giant stack of DVD players that were on the sidewalk out front a few months back. They made good dominoes, at least.

Do you mean make pirated DVDs at 5pointz?
I was looking at that Queens Gazette article about hunters point. They complain that the $700/mo studio’s that will be created are affordable for the $60K workers but not the $24k workers.
If anyone puts up numbers of apartments that only cost $700/mo, I would call that a miracle! Besides, isn’t 1/3 of your income a reasonable target for $24k ($8400/yr)??
Loving the pedestrian bridge. But can’t we just walk the Queensboro?

Instead of a subsidized ferry that runs once in a blue moon and only on certain days of the week, why not build a pedestrian/bike bridge across the East River and put all the transit griping in LIC to rest?
