LIC Linkage: Breadbox gets its 1st pin, condo tales, burglary on Vernon today

A new take on recycling: vinyl floor (literally) at PS 1, Long Island City

A precautionary word to LIC residents around Vernon: we heard about an apartment burglary today late morning/early afternoon on Vernon Blvd and 46th Rd. Supposedly a door was busted in, a window was broken, and a laptop was stolen.

Did anyone see the argument the other night outside Testacchio?

Apparently a woman was prevented from parking in a spot that was being reserved. I have seen Testacchio blocking spots on several occasions. Can they really do this?

I’ve been to Testacchio and believe they are a welcome addition to our area, however, if they were responsible for what took place outside their restaurant, shame on them. That man was frightening. He actually struggled with the older woman (who I recognize from the neighborhood) over a 2 x 4 she was attempting to move so she could park, afterwards he was threatened her and said the most vulgar things imaginable. Does anyone know if he was arrested?

#1 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I did not see the incident but I have noticed Testacchio reserving parking. How is it that they can get away with this?

#2 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Who’s going to stop them?

#3 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

No they can’t block off metered parking spaces for their own use. If you see that happening I think the only recourse is to call the cops. I wouldn’t count on the 108th precinct for much of anything, but it might be worth a try. That’s too bad. They seemed very friendly from the onset.

#4 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I was right across the street and the man was doing some renovations in the building next door to Testaccio, and they were removing debri and she was trying to park and debri got in the way. So they were arguing like crazy, it had nothing to do with Testaccio, just some crazy people in the neighborhood fighting for no reason.

#5 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Parking isn’t worth fighting over.

#6 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

glad to hear this non-event has been cleared up…

#7 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Parking is the only thing worth fighting for.

#8 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

with congestion pricing on the way,,, lic is going to be overun with people parking their cars and taking the train from lic. i don’t rent a parking spot because i am able to find parking, but who can we speak with to ensure lic residents aren’t stepped all over, this is our home. just concerned that ALL street parking will disappear, and garages will run up their prices even more. can council members ensure lic residents get discounted parking?

#9 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#5 it was not about debri in the way and you should not make statements like you know what your talking about, especially if your going to call people crazy.

Although the incident in question had nothing to do with Testacchio, Testacchio was definately and unlawfully blocking parking spaces. I myself was often tempted to approach the owners but was afraid of a confrontation such as what you claim to have witnessed. Hopefully after this incident Testacchio will no longer reserve City Streets for their customers.

#10 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I thought the whole congestion pricing thing was dead… are they really going forward with that?

#11 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

That same man recently had an awful confrontation with a ticket agent for issuing a summons to someone in Mario’s Deli. I think he works for Mario.

#12 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#5 No reason? I think you must be the crazy one.

#13 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

LIC has been dealing with parking issues for a very long time. We don’t have alternate side to deal with so that is a BIG plus.

Where were the robberies on Vernon?

#14 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Tesstaccio is not the only restaurant that I’ve seen do this. Has anyone noticed all of the parking that Manettas takes up for their valet parking? They park the cars on the sidewalk making it very dangerous to walk on that side street. I don’t see how that is any different. They actually take up an entire side street, not just one spot.

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#15, there is no different and nobody said that. This is a situation that happened in front of Testaccio.

Why are you so defensive of Testaccio, are you an owner, relative, employee, or maybe your their landlord. I’ve seen him blocking spaces for Testaccio.

Obviously you have an issue with Manetttas. Are the Manettas your competition?

#16 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

stop putting words in my mouth #16…you seem to be getting very defensive. I was not referring to the “incident” in front, but people were discussing the fact that Tesstaccio reserves a spot on the street for the customers. I was pointing out the fact that other businesses like Manettas do the same thing. I am a pedestrian that walks on that street a lot, and because of the way Manettas has the cars parked, I am forced to walk in the street, making it unsafe. So #16, take a deep breath and calm down, I’m not sticking up for Tesstaccio, nor am I having issues with Manettas, just pointing out the parking issue.

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Here’s where we start to run afoul. Does everything need to become a turf war between opposing allied forces in LIC? Contrary to unpopular opinion, we don’t have any desire to censor free speech… but we are liable for what is said on this blog, ergo we have to intervene when things start getting ugly.

Manettas and Testaccio are known entities with known community members running them… anonymously bashing them on this site is really not fair to them, or to us. In this case I’d say we haven’t crossed the line, but are dangerously rubbing up against it. Being critical of a community entity, or questioning their (supposed) actions doesn’t mean you still can’t be civil about it.

Please put down your weapons Hunters Pointers. At least for the holiday season?

Thank you, liQcity

#18 liQcity / 2 years, 1 month ago

How exactly is discussing parking outside of an establishment bashing the business? In all due respect liqcity.

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I witnessed a man outside of Testaccio (I think he works next door to them) screaming like a maniac into his phone on Tues around lunchtime. It was so outrageous, vulgar and offensive that I walked up to himand asked him to shut up. He ignored me, of course. My young son and I live on that block and do not appreciate having to be exposed to such trash in the middle of the day. This person needs to be stopped. He is a horrific neighborhood character.

#20 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I agree, #19. Parking is a big issue and if any establishment is abusing it,I think we need to talk about it. Although apparently, the thug initially mentioned, has nothing to do with it.

#21 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I personally think “SOMEONE” threatened LIQcity with litigation. Either that or she getting pressure from one of her advertising clients.

Nothing about the above comes anywhere near crossing any line. What kind of country do we live in where we have to fear speaking out against wrongdoing in whatever form it takes? If Testaccio is illegally taking parking spots then lets hear about it. Manettas you are not exempt. Stop parking on the sidewalks. The laws apply to new business and old alike.

#22 Free Speech / 2 years, 1 month ago

Congratulations on spelling Testaccio correctly. Now we can move on to more difficult words like their ultra vires.

#23 Townie / 2 years, 1 month ago

Thank you #22. That’s what I’m talking about!! Isn’t that the point of a community blog? To discuss the positive and negative issues surrounding where we live.

#24 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I think liqcity just wants us to talk about community issues without being assholes. Which I think is more than fair considering some of the trash talk that happens on this blog.

#25 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Normally I would agree with you #25, because this blog does get pretty mean. But I don’t see any comments too far out there this time. Maybe that’s just me.

#26 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Yes, LIQCity is being rediculous but no more than usual. As she has said in the past, this is her site and her rules.

She constantly deletes me when I point our how unfair she is.

Hopefully someone will get to read this before she deletes me again.

#27 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Lets get back to the issue.

I have a request. Would all you people that are not use to parking in NYC kindly learn that space is gold here. Please park your cars reasonably close to the vehicle in front or behind you.

So often precious space is wasted by people leaving 3 to 4 ft. between vehicles. If you need that much space to park or pull out, maybe you should get lessons.

Just thought maybe you may not be aware.

#28 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Does anyone know that lunatic that was arguing with that women? Does he live in the neighborhood? He looked like one of those guys from the shelter.

#29 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I don’t think the request is so unreasonable… it does get nasty on here. Anyway, as nicely as I can say this, I think it’s horribly wrong of any restaurant to block of metered parking. Manettas is definitely a culprit of this. Testaccio, I haven’t seen but I would believe that they did that… though I thought they had a lot around the corner for valet… if that’s the case, then it’s extra wrong for them to block off parking.

And I also thought congestion pricing was a no-go. Now that Bloomie’s on for another four, it’s a go? That will spell so much trouble for LIC parking. We need alternate side ASAP.

#30 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Alternate side and NO meters. This blog is a fountain of hope.

#31 Townie / 2 years, 1 month ago

Alternate side, NO meters and resident parking permits.

#32 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Selective metered spaces around high traffic areas and resident parking permits near subway lines and the major points of access to Queens like the Queensborough Bridge ad Queens-Midtown Tunnels.

#33 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

who are lic’s best council members, i would like them to start thinking about resident parking permits now-before king bloomturd really starts pushing congestion pricing again. i can already see it- we have to take the student’s train passses away because we have no money…unless we pass congestion pricing!!

#34 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

This has already been discussed. We are not getting resident permit parking. It’s definitive, apparently down from Albany. Alternate side, though unliked, will be a huge boon for a parking in the neighborhood because it will prevent what happens now. Cars parked on the street for months at a time. And it’ll also curb (pun intended) commuter parking. So we should embrace it.

#35 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

The new bakery is going to look amazing. I love the roller pin idea and I especially like the location. It will definitely stand out.

#36 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I’m not so sure about embracing alternate side. Limiting parking to one side of the street is limiting it to residents as well as commuters. I just don’t see how it benefits the residents. There simply is not enough space for all the vehicles of residents even without commuter vehicles.

#37 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Make it mandatory, as part of a sales or rental agreement, that residents of the large buildings must purchase a parking space (or two) in their garages. Just getting the cheapskates who live in those buildings off the local streets would help.

#38 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

38 you are an quite the mongoloid, the people who live in the “large buildings” are residents as much as anyone else, why should they be treated different than someone who lives in a two story building. Its the people who leave their cars parked for weeks at a time that are the problem. We should start putting fliers on all cars and to see which ones are actually used and attended to. Any car with multiple ads/fliers on their windshield should at least be identified. That way any parking lot defending vigilanties would know who the bad guys are.

#39 bobby / 2 years, 1 month ago

a “mongoloid”? yikes.

#40 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

What’s wrong with leaving your car parked for awhile? Maybe some people need a car occasionally and not for everyday use.

#41 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Mongoloid?? I haven’t heard that word used like that since grade school in the 1970s. Hey, 38, you do realize that is considered an incredibly offensive term, don’t you? Jeez.

#42 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Ok apologies for the use of the word mongoloid but the point I was trying to make is that 38′s post was absurd on so many levels that its not worth rebutting.

And I am one of the people who only occasionally use my car, but I have a problem with people that leave their car in one spot for literally months at a time without moving. Everyone else who uses their car can’t ever find a spot because out of towners are using LIC’s free parking as long term storage. But we have had this conversation multiple times and there’s no need to really dwell on it now.

#43 bobby / 2 years, 1 month ago

Is there any law about how long a car can legally park on a city street without moving? Just curious. I seem to recall someone on this board describing a time frame.

Regardless, I just think it’s antisocial to use a residential street as your personal garage. There’s an unwritten code of conduct in parking. Even if it isn’t technically illegal to leave your car for weeks on end, it’s just kind of sucky and inconsiderate. If everyone just exercised a little common sense and wasn’t so goddamn selfish in this city, maybe we can find a way to get along.

#44 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Bobby, if it wasn’t worth rebutting, why did you?

More importantly, what should we do about restaurants using street parking for valet purposes? Are they allowed to do this? If they are, so be it for the time being. But if not, is there someone we should call when we see it happening? 311? Transit police? I am sure if we all pitch in as neighborhood police, these issues will be resolved.

#45 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

The restaurants should be buying blocks of spaces in private garages. Or letting their customers find their own spaces. No one has a right to reserve public parking spaces. That’s just absurd.

#46 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

It’s absurd, but they can lobby to extend the meter hours on Vernon or to install more meters on numbered streets. There’s no win-win I can see.

#47 Townie / 2 years, 1 month ago

There are laws restricting people leaving cars for extended periods. The problem is the police don’t have time to police how long a car has been parked in the same spot. I think it is only 24 hrs.

I had serious problems with someone taking advantage and parking 6 antique vehicles on the steet where I live. The community board, the police and dept of motor vehicles came to inspect but there was not much they could do because the cars were registered and inspected. The cops actually told him that all he had to do was move them one foot every 24 hrs. The cars had inspections yet the didn’t run and one did not even have an inspection.

#48 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#45, it has gotten worse than valet parking. Recently a neighbor watched as a ticket agent approached cars near testaccio and someone came to the door and pointed out to the agent which vehicles belonged them. The agent never approached those vehicles.

You may find this hard to believe but it is absolutely true.

#49 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I don’t get it. If you point out that a car belongs to you, eventhough it it illegally parked, then it’s ok??? That doesn’t make sense. I mean, if the fact of the matter is that these cars are parked legally, then there is nothing we can do. But if a parking law IS being broken, I would like to start taking action. I live on this block and plan on buying a car soon which I will be parking on the street.

#50 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

48, a cop said that the owner only had to move the car a tiny bit every day and all would be OK? That sounds completely ridiculous. I cannot imagine that this is a legitimate interpretation of the parking laws, considering the the person who parked had no intention of moving the car. Sounds like a typical lazy cop from the 108th.

#51 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

That’s right #51, that is what they said, they also repeated it to me because I made the complaint. I think they mark to tires or the street near the tires when a complaint is made and supposedly come back to see if the vehicle was moved.

All he had to do was pushed the cars up a few inches.

#52 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I would have taken that guy’s badge number and written a letter to his superior…he basically explained to your neighbor how to get AROUND the law.

#53 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I would like to know what makes Testaccio so special?? If all the tings that are written here are true, why isn’t anyone doing anything about it?? The other restaurants on Vernon don’t control the parking, what makes Testaccio think they can??

#54 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#54, it is not because they are special but making a complaint against the ticket guy for giving certain people a pass would probably prove as useless as it did when the antique car guy was reported.

There are not too many people willing to stand up and be seen when making complaints. Don’t forget that this thread was started because of a vicious argument over a parking space.

#55 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

And, one might add that with the exception of Bobby everyone weighs in anonymously.

#56 Townie / 2 years, 1 month ago

56, again with the crusade against anonymous posting? You post with a nickname: we have no clue who you are. To indulge you, I’ll go by the name Zippy. So are you really any less anonymous than me?

Go ahead, Townie, whoever the heck you are, tell us your full name. And then complain about some goon hanging out in front of Testaccio. Good luck with that.

#57 Zippy / 2 years, 1 month ago

Crusade?
I never complained about any “goon,” so you can’t say you actually familiarized yourself with the thread before laying into me. I did call attention to the fact that nobody could spell Testaccio for half the thread.
What are you so angry about? I merely assert that “Townie” is considerably less anonymous than “Anonymous.” Too abstract, Zippy?

#58 Townie / 2 years, 1 month ago

I park on the street but use public transportation to get to work during the week. Mostly my car sits in the same spot for a few days in a row at least. I don’t see what’s wrong with that. Why should I move it when I have a spot? To give the spot to someone else and drive around looking for one? Ridiculous.

#59 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

I don’t think the problem is neighborhood people parking on the street. The problem comes in when people don’t respect everyone in the neighborhood. There are many times that I can’t find a space and I will park in the East Coast building. And I am not a resident there. And I don’t have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is saving spaces with cones or other items.
Where do people come off doing that?

#60 Patty / 2 years, 1 month ago

I would like to know what makes Manetta so special?? If all the things that are written here are true, why isn’t anyone doing anything about it?? The other restaurants don’t park on the sidewalk, what makes Manettas think they can??

#61 Rich / 2 years, 1 month ago

Patty, are you saying the East Coast building has free parking?

#62 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#61, it has already been agreed that Manettas is not special. No restaurant should use our streets for their personal parking area.

If Manettas bothers you so much, you should do something about it. Call 311, call the community board, call van brunt’s office. Don’t expect others to do it for you.

#63 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

LIC also has so many out of state plates. Insurance rate stealers ~ don’t know? The police should be watching those cars.

#64 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

64, The police should do this, the police should do that. Sounds reasonable. But have you folks figured out yet how lazy and unresponsive our local police precinct is? With their lack of visibility, they may as well be across the river. They do squat.

#65 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

If I’m not mistaken, our precinct has community meetings, right? I think we should start attending and voicing our concerns. This is exactly the kind of issue that will only be addressed if we, the people, bring it up. Otherwise, how will they know anyone cares?

I do wish we had a local cop weigh in on this blog from time to time…

#66 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Perhaps Van Bramer can play a role – if he is not too busy negotiating leases or accepting ACORN money…

#67 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Ok, following up my suggestion to alert our local precinct, my husband went and spoke with a police sergeant at 108th about the parking practices mentioned on this blog. They confirmed that it was illegal to do that. They suggested we attend the next community meeting and bring it up (they are held the last Tues of every month). In turn, they will send a community liasion officer to issue a warning to the restaurants in question. If the practice continues, then they will handle accordingly. As I suspected, they had no prior knowledge of this.

#68 #66 / 2 years, 1 month ago

No, I am not saying that East Coast has free parking. But if I return during the day and I cant find a space I rather put it in the garage for $10 instead of worrying about a meter and getting a ticket. If I had to do it every day I would rent a space.
They City is much harder to park than LIC is.

#69 Patty / 2 years, 1 month ago

is the $10. fee over nite or is it limited hrs?

#70 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

Wow. #68 actually did something. KUDOS.

#71 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

68, Good for you. But I’m a little skeptical that the police will do anything meaningful unless they are dragged kicking and screaming to the restaurants by someone with significant influence. I’m aware of many occasions when residents have complained to the police precinct over one issue or another in years past. Inevitably, the concern is met with benign neglect and nothing happened. I hope you have better success.

#72 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

#72 you are 100% correct. Although, I do know of a situation where someone went and spoke with the community officer and did get some results. Of course this had nothing do with parking, nontheless, the officer successfully mediated the situation.

#73 Anonymous / 2 years, 1 month ago

My husband is the one who actually deserves the credit for “doing something”. Cops care about the community more than you give them credit for. If you treat them like their useless, they will be. Otherwise, they actually DO help now and again. It all depends on how you approach things.

Anyways, I encourage you guys to attend the next community meeting on Tues, next week, so we can put things into motion, particularly those of you who have witnessed the parking violations previosuly discussed.
