Long Island City Getty Gas station to become bakery; Water Taxi expands

Long Island City Getty Gas Station to become bakery, 11th St @ 47th Rd

Woah. The Getty Gas station on 11th St between 47th Ave & Rd is going to be turned into an adaptive reuse bakery, according to this architect’s rendering. Interesting. The entire facade is covered with rolling pins. Even more interesting is that it appears that actual gas will still be sold alongside your freshly baked morning muffin. Yum.

Looks like everyone’s favorite local ferry, NY Water Taxi, is expanding their services by purchasing Circle Line Downtown Cruises. It’s nice to see river transport becoming more relevant and invested in. Especially considering the increased subway ridership and decreased MTA service (holding your breath for a bailout?).

Speaking of the waterways, seems the East River is going to get tapped for some more power.

In Long Island City real estate news, looks like Crescent Club buyers have a 15 day window to pull out of their contracts, and some seem to be jumping at the opportunity, amidst fears of the building going rental. Which does seem to be happening considering Rockrose’s the View at East Coast has units for rent, as does the L Haus with their rent-to-own offer. Other smaller condo developments in LIC have also been rumored to be accepting rentals as well, but are not advertising such deals for obvious reasons.

Now what’s the deal with the gas station bakery? Is it actually happening, or is it some sort of conceptual thing? The gas station was on the market last year, and I believe it was sold.
Also, open question: Has anyone heard anything on “The Prism”? I have a bunch of call in to The Developers Group and they don’t call back. Last I heard was that they were going to open in January, and that obviously didn’t happen.

Given the amount of environmental remediation necessary to turn that site into a food service location, I can’t imagine a bakery being a profitable re-use of the space. Add on the low level of foot traffic on 11th street, and you’ve got a recipe for fail. Nice looking rendering, though…

#2 foot traffic is light in that area but if their product is excellent than people will go out of the way to go there. Plus the population is growing in the immediate area of this proposed bakery.

best I idea I have seen in a long time in LIC

#4 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Really, #3? I live a block away from that site (and have since 2003) and walk by it en route to the subway just about every day (I encounter maybe 3-4 people in a typical morning walk on 11th until I get to the corner of Jackson and 11th where the number jumps to 40-50). The slow population growth in that area and the fact that it’s out of the way for anyone to get to on a weekday makes it a poor location. It’s a nice “pie in the sky” idea, but to be frank, a Dunkin Donuts in the Ten63 building, where there’s 20x more foot traffic, would make way more sense.

Don’t get me wrong, it would be nice for those of us that are close, but beyond my selfish desire to have a place close like that, I don’t think the business would be successful.

Yum! I love my croissants mixed with the smell of oil!

There are very few locations in LIC, or NYC for that matter, where you won’t get exposed to one environmental hazard or another. Bon apetit.

Now that Water Taxi Beach is opening on Governor’s Island, does that mean the savages won’t be returning to LIC this year?

#8 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Smell the printing ink as you walk by, then enjoy the oil smell while inside….

#9 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

I’m sure there are enough savages in NYC to fill two water taxi beaches…

Any clue when dutch kills will open? i’d love a lovely muffin to accompany me with my $15 drink.

#11 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

This will never happen.

#12 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Conceptual rendering. Was never meant to be built, nor will it ever be.

#13 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

#8 I truly hope so.

#14 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

I don’t get it. How the hell was the operator of WTB able to open another one of these places on Governor’s Island? Who are they bribing at the state liquor authority? Honestly, someone needs to look into this.

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

#15 – Governors Island has no residential area or other public “drinking” estabishments. The future plans for the island include parkla nd and recreational venues. WTB would not have to “bribe” anyone. Actually, it’s a great location for them.

#16 anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Where on Governors Island would this go?

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Don’t think WTB is going anywhere anytime soon. I think that beach is the only reason that the East River Ferry service turns a profit when it is run. The boats are packed on the weekends with lines at the terminals to get on. During the week only about 50 people ride.

on a related note. was the bakery desinged by the same crew that gave us the L-haus?

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Don’t know about the design, but looks like the business concept was dreamt up by the same geniuses who gave us the L-Haus.

#20 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

The Getty to Bakery is a concept contrived by a design firm called ODA who may or may not have actual architects on board according to reports I have read. They were not involved in the LHaus development.

#21 anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

They might have not been involved but looks like they stared at the LHaus for awhile ;) It’s cool though, at least we’ll have 2 similar buildings in LIC. That’s a first.

#22 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

it’s 47th AVE, you idiots!

#23 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Don’t disparage idiots. Meanwhile, there seem to be a lot of architecture critics around here.

#24 Townie / 2 years, 11 months ago

I feel sorry for architects. They need to get their creative rocks off designing “concept” bakeries because nearly all of their clients demand boring designs for their condo buildings and shopping malls.

#25 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

That ODA firm looks like a bunch of 27 year olds fresh out of architecture school… and their designs look like unrealistic arch. school projects, appropriately. I wonder if they’ve ever designed anything that got built, other than a couch.

This place is NEXT to the gas station and used to be a garage – why would it require remediation? Aren’t the petroleum tanks under the space occupied by the gas station?

#27 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

#27- are you new to the neighborhood? Walk by the site and see what’s currently occupying it…

#28 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

I agree with #27–the gas station is next to this, and the getty i’s clearly a separate structure. What’s on this site now is a closed down autobody shop.

#29 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

That piece of property is zoned M1-4/R7A (for 6-8 story buildings). Anyone who purchases that site is not going to leave a one-story bakery on it. Sorry.

#30 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Both 27 and 30 have valid points. The property next to the getty is curently a parking lot. So not sure why they would need remediation. I’m not sure if it was purchased by the plaxalls, but the 1st building in (1 story), I know is owned by them. Before they bought it it was a topless donut place for about 3 months. NO JOKE. That was 15 years ago. I digress. And 30 has a ponit because only an idealist….I hope that is the case would build a one story bakery. Where does the truth lie? looks like a thesis project to me. a clever one, but I can’t imagine sitting on 11th watching the cars wiz by.

#31 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

The bakery is a design concept from Yasuo Oda Architects. Web site:www.yasuoda.com. Oda is a Japanese architect , and they are located in Ellicott City, MD.

#32 anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Topless donut shop- now there’s a concept I can get behind.

#33 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Me too–and I’m a girl!
NY is no fun anymore: environmentally correct organic bakeries vs. topless donuts.
In a nutshell.

#34 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Apparently there is a topless donut shop in Jersey.

#35 Townie / 2 years, 11 months ago

#31, are you referring the the topless deli on 46 Rd?

#36 Anonymous / 2 years, 11 months ago

Actually, a successful gas station to bakery conversion is possible. One of the best bakeries in New England is the Seven Stars Bakery in Providence, RI, which took over an old gas station/garage. Now, it’s so popular, it’s spawned two additional bakeries to meet demands for its goods. http://www.sevenstarsbakery.com/
