Proprietor Richard Boccato mixes it up on opening night at Dutch Kills bar, LIC

After all the hoopla about the Dutch Kills bar opening, not a word on the wire this morning about it!

San Remo must have paid top dollars for that article because their pizza and service sucks. I hate to put down local establishments but I must say that the few times I have been there the pizza has been pretty bad and the owner seemed to have an attitude.

Thank goodness LIC has so many other places to get good pizza. If you want pizza by the slice I would go across the street to Zack’s. It is unfortunate that Cassino does not sell by the slice because their pizza is the best pizzeria pizza in the neighborhood

San Remo is terrible. It is amazing that LIC doesn’t have a decent pizza place for just slices. The restaurant cafes are great, but what about just a counter slice place.

Was at Dutch Kills this weekend. Very cool place.

No one seemed to be able to get into Dutch Kills. Is there a dress code?

San Remo has great crust and sauce, their cheese sucks though.

I visited Dutch Kills on opening night and it was a bit of a mixed bag. I got there around 10 and all the booths were taken, so I headed back to the bar.

Looking the place over, the decor was very minimal – just dark wood booths, a dark wood bar with a chalkboard behind it and a small back area with sawdust on the floor, an old chair or two, padded benches along the walls and a upright piano.

The staff all appear as if they’ve stepped through a time machine from the past. (but not in a cheesy, disney, old fashioned Main Street kind of way.)

As I was waiting to catch the barkeep’s attention I started to smell something funny. After a while I figured out what it was – varnish. This place really is new!

There didn’t appear to be any air conditioning or ventilation, so I thought I would just get one drink and then change venues.

I forget which cocktail I ordered – it was basically a mojito with some bitters, but it was really, really good.

I moved to the back area and sipped my drink. Eventually, a guy started playing the piano and was joined by another guy upright bass.

The pianist was excellent. I hope he’s a regular fixture there.

I’ll be back just to work my way through the cocktail menu… hopefully they’ll get some better ventilation!

Note: No dress code.

liqcity seems to get in everywhere. I’ll bet the guy who writes this blog knows everyone in LIC.

I’m not liqcity, and I went on Saturday night. I just walked in, no problems, issues, lines, etc. The place was fairly crowded. The booths and seates filled and a crowd at the bar.
I agree about the varnish smell, it was strong.

I couldn’t get in around 9:30pm. I wonder what the deal was/is with getting in.

#8 He obviously doesn’t know you because he is a she. A very lovely she, I might add.

#11 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

I think you can’t get in when they are at capacity.

Which beers were available? And what kind of drinks did they have?

LIC has bigger issues: http://gothamist.com/2009/05/04/hudson_river_takes_back_fireworks.php

While our fireworks situation was bad last year, it’s non-existent this year. I feel bad for the LIC businesses, who make a killing on the 4th of July.

(p.s. I like San Remo’s – every time I’ve called for delivery, it’s been there in 15 minutes. It’s awesome.)

The fireworks will come back the next year. It’s just in honor of Henry Hudson sailing up the Hudson River. No biggie.

you know what would be cool? if you walked in and everything and everyone inside was in sepia tones!

#16 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

The photo really captures the vibe of the place. Nice job. (as usual)

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

From what I’m reading/seeing, the place seems contrived, a little too kitschy. Is it really worth a visit?

#18 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

so much for the predictions of failure…

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 9 months ago

So what’s the capacity for this place? So every time to reach it, they close their doors?
