Long Island City super windy Friday afternoon linkage

Crossing 11th St near Jackson Ave & the Pulaski Bridge, Long Island City

This week began with a car jumping the curb into Masso Restaurant on Vernon, and ends with a report of another car-related LIC incident. From the liQcity inbox:

“Hi, I live on 11 Street and was walking to the subway this morning around 9.10am when I saw a pedestrian on the floor that was hit by a car on 11 Street between 47 Rd and 48th Avenue. Seemed as though the car that hit the person was making a right onto 11 Street from 47 Rd. Fire trucks and police were on the scene with ambulance on the way. The person hit (couldn’t tell if it was a man or woman or how old because they had blankets on them) was laying on a stretcher alive in the middle of 11 Street. How that person is okay. Just goes to show how dangerous the streets in Hunters Point are.”

I’ve nearly been killed many many times walking my dog in LIC. People drive through here like it’s still a warehouse area. They dont seem to be expecting any actual pedestrians to be here.

I really get tired of allthe prejudice against cars. I am a driver for many many years, and I can’t tell you how many times a damn pedestrian almost ran into my car and i had to jam on my brakes to avoid hurting or killing them…..

Jaywalking, crossing against a DONT WALK sign…and worse is those yuppie ladies with the ipod or texting on their blackberry just crossing with their kid in a souped up stroller against the light.

So from a real driver who had 4 cars i drove over 100K miles each…..it could very well have been the pedestrians fault….

Right on #2, we all know that New Yorkers usually walk around like they’re in the middle of a meadow rather than, well; NYC.

“Prejudice against cars.” That’s rich.

Actually #3, I think many people in NYC are pretty savvy in navigating the terrain around here, just sometimes people are out to lunch. Cars rule the roadways in NYC, so to pull the discrimination card on that one #2 is just plain wrong. ditto #8.

If you actually DROVE a car, you would see what i mean. Lots of people are out to lunch…

And while I am on this subject, how come you bike riders REFUSE to have any lights on your bike let alone reflectors? And why do have to wear BLACK?

I’m sorry if I run you over, but my parents taught us you have to be seen at night for your own safety.

I think pedestrians, cars and bicyclists could all improve their behavior on the roads. Crossing the street while on cell phone, or driving while on one, or biking the wrong way down a one way towards oncoming cars… is all dangerous. Especially in NYC. Safety is in all our hands, not just one group.

Pedestrians in LIC are the worst of anywhere I’ve driven. I honestly cannot believe that there have not been more incidents. Some people just walk out of their apt. buildings like they are Moses walking on water.

Is everyone on here serious? Especially #2. NYC is a pedestrian city. It is one of the great aspects of NYC that sets it apart, it is a walking, neighborhood, pedestrian city. The cars have certainly taken over quite a lot, but if you go in Manhattan, pedestrians cross and cars wait when turning, even if the light favors the car. I understand that’s jaywalking, but that’s also a custom of the city. And I have a car and get equally frustrated by bad walkers, but that’s city life! Not to mention that many drivers in NYC are terrible and reckless. Trucks bomb along 11th st. way over the speed limit, and town cars often go way to fast and ignore walk signals when turning. If you are driving, just relax if someone is crossing in front of you. We are trying to create a neighborhood here, walking comfortably and not being afraid of careless driving, even asking for some forgiveness from bad walking, will help develop the neighborhood. Standing on principle that you can hit people because they jaywalk is ludicrous and stupid.

what about the souped up stroller comment? why do peope prefer that we take our kids around in cheap, ugly uncomfortable strollers?

Because those cheap uncomfortable ones require you to concentrate on where you are going…….there are no shock absorbers, or ball bearing wheels …you have to hold it with 2 hands so you cant talk on the phone…..
