The Times article says that the Vernon-Jackson station is used by about 8,000 people every day. Is that considered a lot? I would have thought more people used that station.
1, Farmers would probably prefer spending Saturdays at other greenmarkets with more customers than in LIC. There were some days last year where only a few people were out buying anything.
Yeah I guess it’s better than losing it altogether. But how many people are they really going to get on Wednesdays?
It should be on Wed because way more people are on Vernon Blvd, however it’s stupid to end at 3pm. Most of the traffic through that spot is after 5pm. They should at least stay open until 6pm. 3-6pm would be their peak sales time. I am a fan of the farmers market, but whoever is running it operates with a paper bag over their heads. It’s so poorly organized, they seem to have no idea what they are doing. I feel bad for the farmers.
So then there will be no parking on 48th on Wednesday’s = BAD IDEA! What about deliveries to the buildings there?
I think the credit union is a good idea. Some of them give better rates than the banks.
IF the farmer’s market isn’t open until at least 7pm, it will fail. Who gets out of work and into by 5 or 6pm during the workweek? No one.
Say goodbye to the market.
Ok now I’m concerned about the parking. Are they now going to tow us on both Saturdays and Wednesdays? What a nuisance!! ( and I like farmer’s markets, but this one is too dinky to be causing such a disruption) Who is responsible for this?
Part of the problem with the greenmarket last year was that there were so few vendors there…
Following up on the idea of a market, I propose that we have an annual stoop sale of sorts in that same area. They are so much fun, it’s a great way to socialize with neighbors and sell & buy new things. We could add a food festival component as well.
I guess what I am getting at, is that we need more community events that cater to a larger group of residents…any thoughts?
Block party on Center Blvd.! Food, booze, more food and more booze.
Bad idea. If no one is going they should improve the offerings to draw people in. Add me to those concerned about parking and deliveries.
So I work from 8am-6pm M-F. Now I have to move my car for a farmers market that I won’t be able to even go to?? Seems like moving it to wed will just help the farmers since people who come to LIC to work during the day have more access to it than I do. Shutting out the residents and on top of that taking away our parking?? Really, really bad idea.
Yeah I agree, this is not in the best interest of the people who live here. It’s in the best interest of the greenmarket only. Boo.
You forget about all of the people who live in LIC and work there and will be able to utilize a new weekday farmers market. Add to that all of the stay at home parents who can shop. This may actually be a great idea
The market is horrible and poorly organized. No one went on Saturdays and I doubt anyone will go on Wednesdays. I went every Saturday last summer, and even did a run volunteering, but the turnout was always extremely low. There is no variety, nothing to lure the community. And it’s a shame. Perhaps those who run the market would be wise to ask people who live here what they want out of a farmer’s market and then actually provide that.
#15, depends on what the aim is. If it’s to provide something for the community, then wed is a huge miss. MOST of the people at the waterfront work regular hours. Especially in the towers… ever seen the huge flood out in the morning? Yeah, it’s soccer moms and nannies left, and then mostly people who work in LIC, which sadly the majority of seem to be real estate brokers. Anyway, is the farmers market for them or for us? I feel like if you actually live in LIC you get the shaft in so many ways… parking for commuters, now the farmers market for them. I agree with #16, they should have polled the community before just making the switch. I also work and I went every sat to support the farmers, and last year was especially disappointed. Whoever runs the greenmarket really needs to sit down and come up with a game plan. And CHECK IN WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY LIVE HERE. I’m pissed about the parking too. We better have our Saturdays back at least.
It always seems like mostly apples vendors to me. Some veggies would be much more enticing.
I am so sad about the Greenmarket! How will anyone in this neighborhood actually go? They should at least consider once a month on Saturdays. I am pretty sure folks who work full time outside of this neighborhood outnumber stay at home moms and those who work in this neighborhood. Besides – who grocery shops near their place of work anyhow?
The Greenmarket is an epic fail. I predict this is their last year. Honestly I wish they would go away. They are more of a nuisance than a benefit since they shut down the entire street for 3 vendors selling apples. There is no selection or variety.

Greenmarket on Wednesdays from 8am-3PM?? Don’t most people have jobs? That’s really too bad because I enjoy having a market so close
