What exactly goes on at a senior center? I thought there were meals, but from the article it seems to be more of a social club for the elderly. Is that right? Card and bingo games to win, trips to plan, concerts to attend, parties to throw, yoga poses to try, movies to enjoy and good friends with whom to sit back and relax. This is all fine and good, but if we have to chose between police, teachers , firemen and bingo, I think the answer is obvious. I thought there was more to a senior center than that. Was I wrong?

1, you’re setting up a false choice. We should have all those things and find the money elsewhere.

The senior center serves food, which is pretty basic from what I understand. And a good number of people who eat there are barely staying above water with their rising costs of living in this insane city. Besides, if I could spend a few of my tax dollars so that my older neighbors find pleasure in the company of others, instead of being holed up in their apartments lonely and miserable, I have no problem with that. Our heartless mayor can find the money for this program in his sofa cushions.

I agree, it’s a false choice. And in the face of these kinds of closures, including fire stations and LIC’s lack of medical service, the city should hold on HPS and make sure the neighborhood has all the necessary components before adding another 10,000 people to the mix. If there is money for that, then there is money for our elders, our youth, and everyone in between to get the basic services they need. Senior centers provide one of the few socialization opportunities for elders in our society, and without that, their quality of life is negatively impacted. That senior center at the church is very active, and LIC has a huge older population, many whom have lived here their whole lives. I think LIC also needs a youth center as well. Maybe the city or one of the developers should include a community center in as a give-back. I guarantee it will be used.

3, you are raising an issue that has troubled me for the past several years in this city. It seems that despite exploding redevelopment and gentrification, and I assume property tax collections, personal wealth and other increased revenues, you don’t see the concomitant improvements in other areas of our civic life. Where does all the money go? I’ve lived in other parts of the country, and I’m confused why significantly less well-off towns are able to provide all kinds of services for their residents. But these things — libraries, public pools, senior centers, day care, youth programs etc — are always in peril or on the chopping block in New York.

The reason priorities are upside down is that despite the projected Bloomberg image i.e. forward thinking efficient manager, etc., he still worships classic Republican trickle down economics.

I kind of agree #5. But this is more about ego than economics. Politicians just want to stick their flag on everything. They are not really looking at facilitating any long term planning because there’s no glory in it. That’s a flaw in the system, IMHO.

Hate to leave negative feedback. Was it just a seriously off night or is Testaccio pizza always that bad. I had heard so many raves. So I finally tried two. They both had crust like a thin hard cracker. You could snap it like a cracker and it was pasty flavored to tasteless. The toppings were good but to me meager for a $20 12″ wide “pie”. To me it felt like they don’t look at or care about what they are sending out.

It’s terrbile that nothing is being done to keep the senior center. I did sign a petition a week or so ago. I know our senior center is in need of some major repairs – but maybe there are grants out there somewhere that could help.
