Mob bosses, nurses, bricklayers, and feminists - all in Long Island City.

Corner building of Vernon & 44th Drive, Hunters Point, Long Island City

Brick loft building at Vernon & 44th Dr, the new home of Next Level Floral, LIC

Someone commented on this photo in Flickr that is the direction they’d like to see LIC development move in. I agree. It’s a gorgeous building, and I’m told it’s full of lovely lofts.

After visiting the Condo Festival this weekend, which there are sure to be more of this blossoming spring, I’ve gained an even deeper appreciation for the existing buildings. And it was kind of ironic that the showcase was held in the Puck building, which is the antithesis to the current wave of generic, glassy architecture. New development is not inherently bad, but it would be nice if they could get a little creative, and preserve as much of the rich building history as possible. Instead of just plowing them down.

that is a beautiful building.

This is *not* an attractive building. Looks like urban planning circa 1960.

you should see it in person.

I really like the look of the Gantry. And the Galaxy. Those smaller buildings are great. The Foundry...eh, it's ok. At least it's not cookie cutter. The East Coast shit sucks though.

Why are you suggesting that it does not photograph well?

#5 Anonymous / 1 months ago

Looks like a flophouse or a tenement. Not my style at all.

no #5, it just looks a little more majestic in person. I agree, it's got some personality. But it doesn't seem to translate in the photo. I walk by this building everyday.

It's easy to forget that Puck building and so many other landmarks were once shiny new developments. I'm not saying all new developments are good - a lots of them stink - but the knee-jerk nostalgia held sacred by NY NIMBYs will lead us nowhere, fast.

Is that not the loft building that once housed Chris and Tina of the Talking Heads, as well as jazz trumpeter Don Cherry and his daughter Neneh, back in the day?

The Puck is not so shiny. It's mostly brick and it's an undeniably beautiful building. East Coast however is not a stunning architectural achievement. It's a bland eyesore.

I would live in that building. Are there any spots open? Is it rental? Does anyone know?

#11 Anonymous / 1 months ago

To say that East Coast is an eyesore is to display your ignorance and bias. That is just a silly statement. Tell me what is so great about this building on Vernon. If that lot was empty and a developer was going to put this exact building up today, you would complain that it is ugly and boring.

#3. I hear you. I walk down Vernon to stand in front of the building at least once a week. It's one of my favorite buildings in the neighborhood. There's something about how solid it is in person. I love it. I was so happy when Next Level moved in there. But it looks like there are some other cool goingson inside. I want to get invited to a party there...maybe if I stand outside long enough....

I looked at three different units for rent in this building and they were gorgeous. The one that Next Level Floral Design has taken over wasn't set up too well for residential living, but the other two were terrific. A little out of my price range, so I didn't bite, but a very nice place overall. Wish more like this were being converted to residential/mixed buildings...

the building looks like a knock-down, are you kidding? the people that like this, don't like a building like arris, i don't get it???

#15 Anonymous / 1 months ago

I like the Arris.

Who owns this building? Always thought it was just commercial.

#17 Anonymous / 1 months ago

I like this building and I like arris too.

Yes Rex, it still holds some of the people you mentioned. The spaces inside are to die for. How about a 5000 square foot loft? This is what developers should aspire to. Give it a clean if you want it shiny like the Puck. It's beautiful anyway you look at it.
