Permit Parking in LIC? $20M more for the library? Water Taxi Beach Blues.

Looking South from Hunters Point, Long Island City
Nice chunk of LIC news today. Looks like those parking workshops actually listened to the people that showed up. In conjunction with the famous Congestion Charge Plan, the DOT (Dept of Transportation) is proposing a Residential Parking Permit plan for a few specific neighborhoods that could be adversely effected by parkers trying to avoid the charge. LIC is one of them of course. Though, if anyone has tried to park in Hunters Point between the hours of 6am and about 4/5pm, you know it’s impossible anyway, so those new drivers coming to park here are SOL. It will be nice though to have residential parking. All hoods in the RPP plan will be treated on a case-by-case basis involving determination by community boards etc.
It seems the allocation for the new library suddenly jumped from $20M: “…$40 million for the build-out of a new Library Services Center in Long Island City in Queens.”
Water Taxi Beach is feeling the heat before the summer begins. Urban retreat or community nuisance? Seems the board meeting controversy had more to do with the Waterfront Crabhouse upset about WTBeachers rowdily trying to use their bathrooms, but for those of us who live in the pathway from WTB to the subway… I’d say there’s definitely a community issue. Some solutions offered by WTB were to shorten hours on Sunday night and provide additional portable bathroom facilities.

P.S. the caption of that photo is off… definitely looking South toward Williamsburg, not east.
You’re right. Thanks.
No wait a minute – are you sure it’s South? That’s the LIE running up the right side, and the mystery dev at the bottom of the Pulaski… that’s a confusing pic actually.
That’s not the LIE, it’s the Pulaski. See the Williamsburg Bridge in the distance?
OK, I see it now. You’re right. It’s south. Thanks for the clarification.
I hate the WAter Taxi Beach. I wish it would shut down.
Wow LIC’ers you guys really know the landscape. Even I get turned around sometimes, and even in my own shots! I got two emails alerting me to the correct orientation of this photo. Good looking out.
How’d you get up there, anyway?
I always keep wishing there was a walkway on the South side of the Qboro Bridge for views of Hunters Point. Or that the slightly-too tall buildings north and south of me (and Citicorp to the east) would stop blocking my roof views. At least I can see Manhattan.
It’s all about friends in high places. :)
What is the deal with these stealth community board meetings?
Anyone know how these parking permits work? I don’t have a car, but sometimes I have visitors/bands in town crashing… can I get a permit that I can put in their car so they can park, seeing as I don’t need one myself?
Nope and that’s the point.
too many out of towners. Go away, NY is full.
No, it isn’t out-of-towners, it’s these commuter types who apparently can’t just take the subway/LIRR. Bands obviously need to park somewhere. Wait, where do bands park if they need to play a show? Are these things only certain hours of the day?
This thing must only be for during daytime hours. I just saw it would allow 90-minute periods for visitors. It’d be ridiculous if I had to have bands move their van twice during shows or something… either that, or we need a public parking garage closer than the Queens Plaza one.
I think I should have the right to receive a permit for occasional visitors if my car-owning neighbors are going to be hogging spots every single day of the week. This program is favoring car-owners otherwise, which is exactly what it shouldn’t be doing.
YEAH. what is the deal with stealth community board meetings? why are they so secret? and who knows about them and goes? I only ever read about them having happened.
I wonder what sort of people are on the community board. They might be a lot of old-timers with time on their hands… and little internet usage… or little reason to try to get a lot of other residents involved. Any community board folks read this? Let us know what you are up to!
they announce everything all the time. pay attention stupids.
when and where are the announcements? help us stupid people find the way o’ wise and all knowing one.
Brandon, you say you “should have a right to a permit” but you don’t own a car. Why not buy car insurance, pay a registration fee, and then ask for the parking permit.

Man, one Saturday night last summer I was at a show at Dominie’s Hoek and all these douchebags kept coming in to use the restrooms after Water Taxi Beach closed. Don’t they have restrooms down there?
