Great. Just when the hints there have been progress in cleaning up the Newtown Creek, along comes a waste transfer station. Once again, LIC continues to bear much of the burden for much of the shit in NYC.

Someone’s gotta do it. LIC is a mostly industrial neighborhood without as many people; probably a better place for it than Sunnyside Gardens or Park Slope, no?

That food cellar video is pretty cheezy, but they continue to impress me. I’m doing most of my food shopping there nowadays.

#3 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

food cellar is soooooo over priced, it’s crazy!!!

#4 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

I have zero interest in trekking around LIC Queens and Brooklyn to save a quarter on a grocery item. Call me wasteful, but I’m willing to pay more for the convenience and selection.

#5 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

And that’s what’s wrong with society today…LAZY!!

#6 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Foodcellar has good selection?

#7 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

it’s like a more expensive whole foods. I didn’t think that was possible to be more expensive than a whole foods. I’m just tired of stores charging ridiculous prices because they have no competition in the neighborhood.

I’m with #5- if I’m going to trek around, spending money on gas or transit- how am I really saving money? Plus, if you look closely, you can get some pretty reasonably priced items at Food Cellar! I bought a dozen of jumbo eggs the other day for $1.99.

I understand your point, but I think Food Cellar is taking advantage of the fact that people are not willing to trek around. I was very excited when they opened, much more convenient. But they need to lower their prices a bit. I’ve walked out of there spending $60, with 2 shopping bags, and then left wondering what the hell I bought. It’s just not right. We’re not talking about it being a little pricey…it’s outrageous mark up!

Has anyone tried Dutch Kills yet? Looks pretty cool! I like the decor.

#11 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Be grateful we have a really good (yes, pricey) place to buy groceries. Honestly, what other options do you expect in NYC right now? These days, neighborhood grocery stores are becoming extinct. Large newer stores with lower prices are almost always in shopping plazas in far-flung areas accessible only by car or a bus ride. The only other option is the Korean deli, which are similar to Food Cellar in price and convenience, but they are often dirtier and don’t have as broad a selection.

Isn’t that so sad #12. Stores should have a responsibility and obligation to give the public good food at a reasonable price. We as consumers can’t change this unless we stand up for it. I know, I know, we live in NYC and everyone is far to busy to care, but I for one will not settle. Things won’t change until we change out lazy attitudes. Support your local businesses, your green markets, and local fruit/vegetable stands!

C-Town 4eva!

#14 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Ctown looks dirty to me. I don’t think stores have an “obligation” to charge reasonable prices. I think they would do better business if they did offer more varied prices. I like Food Cellar. Plus don’t forget there’s a costco down the street for big & cheap shopping.

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Hell let’s put in a Wallmart with that mentality. I do think businesses should be obligated to sell good, reasonably priced food. Healthy living is what it’s all about. Americans eat crap because it’s cheap. Why not make good food reasonable too. Food cellar is taking advantage of its community, because they have no competition, and people like you put up with it because it’s “easier.”

#16 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

I try to support the local businesses because I want them to succeed. It cost a lot of money to rent and renovate that space. They took a chance on LIC where no one else did for decades. My 2 cents, but you have a very paternalistic view of business if you think they have some obligation to you. I don’t feel taken advantage of. If you do then you are right in not shopping there.

I think Food Cellar is about as good a place as we will ever get in the current economic climate. I’m glad they’re in our neighborhood. They beat any other convenience store (which is really what they are). Along with Key Food in Greenpoint, Costco up Vernon, and the specialty stores in Astoria, we basically have all the food and grocery needs covered.

We’re getting a Met Food, I believe, on that block where Lucky Mojos is. It may take anothe ryear to build, but it’s coming.

#19 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

The Metfoods deal died a long time ago. Metfoods determined they would have an issue with their trucks on the tiny one-way street.

#20 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

20, and thank goodness for that. It was a stupid idea to begin with putting a supermarket with a parking garage (and condos, of course) on that otherwise quiet, residential street. Lucky Mojo’s is bad enough.

#21 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

That’s not totally a residential street and never has been.

Lot of commercial activity there…whether it’s been welcomed or not is another story.

#22 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

#21, by those standards fresh direct wouldn’t have opened either. Your description would also apply to the block that fresh direct is on as well as 90% of the blocks in LIC. Lets keep an open mind towards progress.

#23 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Wait #23, are you really comparing 51st Ave to Borden Ave? Please

#24 Norma Metcalfe / 2 years, 7 months ago

Why not? Both are residential blocks, both blocks are quiet, both would have had condos, both would have had a garage, both would have been home to a supermarket. Why are they so different. If food cellar can peacfully coexist in that settting why cant Met foods? Nothing so radical about that. All I’m saying is let not set up these artifical barriers. There’s no reason a comercial enterprise couldn’t operate there.

#25 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Borden Avenue, where Fresh Direct is located is 4 lanes wide, which in my mind is entirely different than 51st which is a one way street with some beautiful brownstones on it. I am not saying they shouldn’t be allowed to be there just that it makes no sense when you could be closer to the water and the real density of people. It would destroy the block as far as noise goes.

#26 anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

Ah yea…..51st has been 95% residential until Lucky Mojo’s came along. I don’t know how lucky that is. To bad it isn’t the original rib place. Pearson’s. That was the bomb. That electrician from City Lights built that ridiculous building. I digress……I only purchase cheese that is reasonable from Food Cellar, I take 4 kinds of oranges to the register and have them price them for me and I buy the cheapest of the same comparable juicing oranges. (Their worst fault is they do not price everything …which is against the law!) I bought a great little piece of seasoned steak last week fore $5 and put it on all my lovely CSA greens. Dynamite! I buy only items that are reasonable. Food Cellar is here and I have mixed feelings so I support them by what I buy, I don’t give into higher pricing just because they are there. I will walk to C-town for flour, or what ever cheaper items might be gotten elsewhere. I don’t think their accountants give a flying……you know what. But it’s my way of resolving myself with their presence. Hey and compare getting 4 brownies…at Food Cellar for the price of 1 at Comunitea.

Tell you…….the CSA is working out fantastically!!!!!! There is your healthy eating at a reasonable price.
