Vernon/Jackson to get a hotel; rezoning battles on in Dutch Kills

Hunters Point, Long Island City, LIC, Queens, NYC, 11101

View from 49th Ave & 5th Street looking South, Long Island City

The hotel development boom in Long Island City is not limited to Dutch Kills, though it certainly is concentrated in Queens Plaza. But never fear Vernon/Jackson, we are on the hoteliers’ radars as well. It looks like a couple of adjacent parcels on 50th & 49th Aves between Vernon & 5th St are going to be transformed into a hotel:

“A private hotel developer purchased the properties 5-29 50th Ave. and 5-28 49th Ave in Long Island City, NY, from a private owner for $2.2 million, or $192 per square foot. The properties traded after lengthy proceedings involving a 1031 exchange and a parcel subdivision.”

It bothers me that there is so little renovation of existing buildings and uses in LIC. Cool, old industrial buildings just get wiped away, and all the low-scale residential buildings are vanishing. Other cities manage to hang onto their older buildings as they gentrified. Why doesn’t this ever happen in NYC?

I wish I had know about Crafts at the Creek, I would have gone. Were there fliers or anything? I never saw a thing about it.

Isn’t a hotel/motel also going up where that tiny house used to be on 5th Street that now has the pigs with wings, next to the Galaxy condo?

Is it a Comfort Inn? Because I hate that other one in Queens, nearby. They don’t let me rent for only an hour, it’s a 3 hour max! Like who takes that long anyway, really. Well I hope the Comfort Inn in LIC is awesome… unless it is some like upscale, hip, trendy place that is not a chain… they never do hourly, ever! I love LIC… with a passion!

haha. Anyone remember the “OTEL”? On vernon near the bridge?? It’s some mediocre refurbished hotel now, but back in the days #8 you could definitely rent the rooms by the hour. Maybe even only by the hour. The O-tel. Aah I miss the old LIC sometimes, but the new is nice too. Just different.

Re: comments by No. 8 and 10. Is it possible to pronounce the word “gross” in three syllables? I’ll have to try.

#11 I never went to the OTEL. Just knew about it. ;) -#10

The Hotels in Dutch Kills should ONLY be concentrated around Queens Plaza. Unfortunately Queens Plaza, that nexus of 7 trains, has NO retail and nothing but lapdance parlors and donut shops and oh, yes, if you’re craving to get your ass blown off in Iraq, Queens Plaza also sports a convenient Armed Forces recruiting center. What an embarrassing DUMP.

No, the Hotels are NOT concentrated on Queens Plaza but in the heart of residential Dutch Kills, in the middle of predominately residential blocks of small 2-3 story private homes blocks from Public Transportation.

Queens Plaza is an desolate, menacing eyesore. It reminds me of seedy parts of Bombay in the 70′s. Those erector set trains festooned with hanging cables! What a disgrace to this area. It is not only the Gateway to Queens it is also the Gateway to Manhattan. Queens and LIC are branded by this pig-sty.

There should be an elevated Plaza with access to the trains to a reasonably priced, but hip, store like a Target or a Kohl’s. I mean if you live in LIC where can you buy a shower curtain OR a BOOK!!!??? Queens Plaza with some decent amenities should be the place for Hotels AND some decent shopping.

By the way, these hotels by and large don’t have more than 20 parking spaces despite having hundreds of rooms.
