Dutch Kills Bar opens on May Day

Dutch Kills Bar, 27-24 Jackson Ave, Long Island City, 718.383.2724
Hang on to your hats folks, the long-awaited Dutch Kills Bar is opening their non-descript exterior doors to the public at 5pm this Friday, May 1st. The interior is anything but non-descript. But you shall see. Go. Imbibe. $9 cocktails.

Let the party begin!!!!!!!!!
I think that dude that’s been itching for $15 drinks should be forced to pay as such.
May Day? Is this gonna “revolutionize” drinking? Or are they just proud of their “proletarian” prices. Drinkers of the ‘hood unite. No way I can justify paying that much often (especially given recent paycuts and cost-of-living increases… thanks, recession!) but will definitely try the place…
Still no word on parking for my penny farthing?
I can’t wait to wait in line to get in.
What kind of bar is this going to be? Like a hipster bar?
#8, more of a yuppie/foodie bar. Hipsters can’t afford fancy drinks (most of them don’t have trust funds, believe it or not) and usually stick to cheap beer.
Does anyone really think there will be a line to get in? The location seems out of the way for most people (especially Manhattanites)… I would think that would keep it reasonably low-key. I can’t imagine West Village or UES-types hanging out on Jackson Ave under an underpass in the dark waiting around comfortably.
Like the meat packing district isn’t like, or wasn’t like, where Dutch Kills is going?
Ugh. Please don’t let it become like the meat-packing district around there… I live a few blocks away… the EuroElectro crowd who goes to Warm Up is bad enough.
At least WTB draws the majority of the PS1 crowd away from your area #12. :)
So because the owner of the bar and his publicist breathlessly claim that there will be lines around the block to get in, and you just accept this as fact? Please. You’re witnessing the next flop before it even opens. Mark my words.
Of course there won’t be lines out the door, eveyrone is just goofing around.
But it won’t be a flop by any means either. They said the same thing about WTB when it opened. Now they have insane cover charges 4 nights out of the week!
I’m with number 15, I don’t think it’ll flop either. Lines out the door are possible – usually their spaces are very small and don’t accommodate throngs of people… but who knows, this is LIC and not LES.
I like the concept of this bar but the problem with it is that its a “destination” bar with nowhere else to go nearby once you are ready to move on with the evening.
Makes for a great curiosity trip but they’ll need some seriously good service and drinks to make people come back often, even if they are from the nabe.
BTW, ION’s Romanian Restaurant is out of business from what I heard.
A sort of cheap, crappy neighborhood bar, The Shannon Pot, is about 5 blocks away.
Once PS1 starts up in July and August, they’ll get the overflow crowd from that. I know, I know, that’s only for 2 months and just Saturdays, but that gets good buzz and word-of-mouth going.
And I assume the owners of this bar aren’t thinking they’re going to be millionaires from Day 1 and are planning l-o-n-g term growth. Within 4 years they’ll look like geniuses!
They are geniuses.
my $15, I mean $9 drinks are almost here!
Yes, I’m SURE they’re counting on OVERFLOW from the Shannon Pot. Aim high!
I’m sure the Queens Plaza strip clubs will see a bit of extra business from those looking to keep the party going after DK…
i’m wondering if it is going to be too busy friday??
we are planning on meeting a few friends there coming from queens plaza, hunters point and yes – manhattan…
hmmm, as for other places to drink before/after in the area there is the soon-to-be-opening studio square beer garden and ravel hotel roof or wunderbar (all not that close but still possibilities).
Dutch Kills won’t get the overflow from The Shannon Pot, I was just saying that there’s somewhere else to go after Dutch Kills.
And I was thinking that Dutch Kills would get some overflow from Wunderbar and Ravel too.
Just make sure to be there Monday-Wednesday…
Shannon Pot is fine if you decide on a few afforable drinks after you’ve had expensive ones. La Familia is right there, too. And you can get some late-night grub at Court Square Diner or over to 5 Star Punjabi… or Dunkin Donuts at Queens Plaza.
Ion’s is indeed closed but a sign says a new place is going to open soon in that space.
Much to my dismay, it turns out WunderBar is the ex-Bulgara space, not an addition to the area… so, instead of 3 European restaurants right there in Ravenswood it’s just German. Oh well.
BUT. WunderBar is kinda fun. HUGE mugs and lots of german bar food. Even Spaetzle for us veggies.
Checked out Wunderbar last Friday and its pretty great but nowhere near DK.
I mean if you’re going to get sloshed and drive somewhere else, then anything is game. Heck, you can get to Midtown or the Irish bars in Sunnyside in 5-10 minutes.
But there is really nothing else to stumble to once you’re done with DK.
There ya go; get sloshed, then get in a car to drive somewhere else to get more sloshed. Good advice.
Charlie.
Just don’t get sloshed and get on your single speed bike. Please!
fan of wunderbar – but definitely better going as a group (safer if walking). we were enjoying a few of the dark pilsners by the pitcher there this week and even got one on the house…
Wow, there’s already a line down the block!
I hear you have to pay $15 just to get on line!!!
I hear they make you check your phones at the door so you won’t be able to mess with the “vibe”
nice place. air was broken, otherwise. fantastic decor, high ceiling in the back. piano fills the nook very well. much success, wear sundays BEST.
So how much were the drinks?
Were they letting everyone in? I noticed a few people outside.
And, really, there’s a dress code?
It’s totally fabulous. The door was run by someone wearing a bow-tie & suspenders. Yes, it’s kind of a fancy dress place, though I didn’t see any signs about a dress code. There is one in Milk & Honey, though it’s minimal and part of the concept. This is again a great concept. And it was full and busy, and people did have to wait, but it was not insane and an amazingly great time! kudos!
Are people allowed to stand inside or are they other sit-only policies enforced?
$9 drinks are a lot cheaper than a trip to Disney or Colonial Williamsburg…
went last night, this place is great. really cool spot, going to be my new local for many other too.
happy it is so close to where i live (on thomson) this ‘hood is getting better and better with each month that passes, great to see.
