LIC new local biz update; Havana and health food store dreams come true

First 3 rolling pins up on Breadbox Café, 11th St, Long Island City

Long Island City New Local Biz Quickie Update

  • A preview of what’s to come: the first 3 rolling pins have gone up on Breadbox Café‘s now (at least semi)famous facade! The rest are coming soon… 47-11 11th St, LIC, 718.389.9700

  • Madera, Vernon Blvd’s brand new Cuban Grill & Steakhouse, opened this past Friday. “Madera Cuban Grill’s chefs capture the flavors and excitement of old Cuba and bring it to NYC, preparing flavor-filled dishes in the traditional Cuban way. Using freshest ingredients and family recipes from parents, brothers and sisters who once lived in Habana, food is carefully prepared to taste like the best home cooking.” Their menu is now online, and you can also sign up for their VIP list for updates. 4729 Vernon Blvd, LIC

  • Caffeina, the coffee shop in the bottom of the LIC Art Center, is supposedly FINALLY opening this week after having signs up and furniture inside for what seems like two years. 44-02 23rd Street, LIC

  • Good news for Court Square area residents: the old Oh So Good Deli on the corner of Jackson & Thompson is now the ENC Market, which opened up last week.

  • LIC’s newest grocer is the Natural Frontier Market, and will open on May 14th in the ground floor of the rental building 12-01 Jackson Ave, @ 11th St.

Breadbox is really cute!

Finally, an alternative to the overpriced Foodcellar. Though it is a little bit of a walk from the waterfront. I hope it won’t be very expensive.

Keep dreaming #2.

Breadbox does look like it’s going to be a cute little cafe! I’m also looking forward to the other new businesses – it’s always good for the community when new places open up.

I can’t wait for Natural Frontier Market! I’m sure it will be priced around the same as Foodcellar, but hopefully the quality will be better. There are some days that Foodcellar’s produce is just so sad looking. And for those of us who live away from the water like myself adds an extra bonus!! Because let’s face it, not EVERYONE in this neighborhood lives down by the water.

Really#5? I thought EVERYONE in the neighborhood lived in the highrises!!!! (I live on 21 street:)) god forbid they have to walk an extra 2-3 blocks!!that’s 2-3 blocks to get to the store. I feel soooo sorry for them.

I know me too! Those poor people living by the water. They really have it bad!

#6 & #7 thank you for understanding our pain, but we actually come down from our ivory towers and walk inland. I know this because I have seen many of my pampered neighbors wondering outside their designated territory.

I was only commenting on what #2 wrote. I found it amusing.

Breadbox is fabulous! I just had breakfast there and saw read about their partnership with the NY Foundling – what a great idea! It made me proud to live in this neighborhood. Aside from all the bickering, some people actually DO good work.

Go Breadbox!

Breadbox is a wonderful addition to this neighborhood (my favorite is their chicken salad on a bagel). I am so glad to have a bagel/sandwich/hangout alternative to the aggressively impolite Bricktown.

Breadbox is amazing. And I totally agree with the rude behavior at Bricktown. I always come out of there smelling like their greasy grills. Thank you Breadbox for your wonderful attitudes, food, and decor!

How about paying market rate for your apartment #6? Why are we helping you live in a place where we pay honestly?

#13 Anonymous / 1 year, 9 months ago

# 13, what makes you think that #6 isn’t paying market rent? Because they live on 21st street? There are plenty of market rent places not on the waterfront and besides, if they have lived in this neighborhood for a long time, moving here before the highrises, they most likely are rent stabilized tenants. Please explain how you are helping them live in a place that you “pay honestly” what ever that means. I guess if you had the opportunity to move into a rent stabilzed apartment where your rent would be cheaper you would pass it up because it wouldn’t be honest.

Wow #13, you are very ignorant, and making a huge generalization! What you pay for is a lifestyle. You are paying for all of the amenities that those buildings offer. It has nothing to do with an “honest” price. If you have that much money to throw away towards having a doorman, gym, pool, and live as if you are in a hotel, then go right ahead. But don’t go saying that people who don’t live in those towers are not paying an “honest” price. I’m pretty sure anyone who can afford to live in lic is paying quite a bit more than they maybe should, thanks to your wonderful towers.

#13, are you just trying to stir up controversy? Are you really that bored? Or are you really that pretentious? Maybe both!

Went to Madera last night and wow it was horrible. I had big expectations but they have some serious problems. I hope they work it out. I’ll give them another chance in three months.

the new deli on jackson in court square actually has pretty decent selection of stuff.

#18 Anonymous / 1 year, 9 months ago

17, would you care to elaborate? I heard from someone who went that it was pretty good.

#19 Anonymous / 1 year, 9 months ago

Yeah, I also heard good things about Madera… I’m sure in the beginning there are going to be problems. I hope we can be supportive to new business, and give them critical feedback instead of hurting them by just writing that they suck. I’m sure it doesn’t suck, and the owners seem like nice people who want to do a good business. It takes a village sometimes folks…

I agree with #20, we need the restaurants to do well and we can help them. Thanks for a positive attitude.
