Long Island City local biz update; A bounty of new eats and… ice cream!

Jora, a new Peruvian restaurant is arriving to LIC – photo by Ciprian Toma

After three and a half years of blogging about Long Island City, we’ve become very familiar with the neighborhood’s Circadian rhythm. Every winter, a whole bunch of new businesses quietly brew beneath the surface and then sprout in the Spring. Well, this Spring, albeit quite late, is no different – except for the business bloom is much more robust than usual. Or maybe it’s just been a really long winter.

Ok LIC, here’s the new biz coming at you:

Alobar, restaurant and bar opening up on Vernon Blvd at 47th Ave, LIC

New Eats in LIC

  • The old Crossroads Diner at the corner of 48th Ave & 11th St is transforming into a Peruvian restaurant & bar called Jora, according to the sign on the door.

  • Alewife, a self-described beer bistro is landing in the old Lucky Mojo space on 51st Ave between Vernon Blvd & 5th St.

  • Alobar, a new restaurant, bar, charcuterie & cafe has been visibly brewing for some time now, on Vernon Blvd between 47th Ave & 46th Road.

  • Skinny Cantina’s, a Mexican joint brought to us by the SHI brothers, is anticipated to open this summer at the bottom of 4705 Center Blvd – just in time for Margherita season!

  • The controversial Dunkin Donuts is landing their spaceship on Vernon Blvd at 49th Ave.

  • LIC is officially getting on the chain gang, as Subway, the sandwich franchise, will be joining the party next to the Chase Bank on Jackson Ave @ 49th Ave.

  • The retail space in the bottom of 10-50 Jackson Ave Condos @ the corner of 49th Ave, is rumored to be getting a new bakery. More deets on this coming soon.

Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices coming to the Solarium Condos, LIC

Ice Cream

  • Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices is headed for the remaining retail space at the Solarium Condos, just west of Vernon Blvd on 48th Ave.

  • LIC must be screaming for ice cream because there’s another ice cream shop coming to the old Vine Wine location on Jackson Ave @ 11th St. No deets on this yet, just the basics.

Rev up for Crank, a spinning studio coming to the View Condo building, LIC

New Amenites for LIC

  • The ground floor retail space at the View Condos in the Queens West waterfront is about to be graced with a new spinning studio called Crank. It’ll be a great way to work off all that ice cream!

  • The retail spaces in the bottom of 10-50 Jackson Ave Condos @ the corner of 49th Ave, are getting hit with a double whammy because a beauty salon is also slated for the ground floor. Again, stay tuned for more specifics.

  • Lolly’s Learning Center is opening up a toddler daycare center in their large space on 47th Ave @ Vernon Blvd.

Recently Opened

  • Little Oven, a new macaroon bakery which opened on Jackson Ave just East of 11th St has been delighting LIC’ers since their recent arrival. We know because we’ve received multiple emails alerting us of this new local confection-concoction. Yum!

  • Pumpernickel, A Bagel Store & Deli has arrived to 44th Drive between Jackson Ave & 23rd St, next to the Citibank ATM’s.

Whew!! Enjoy your new offerings LIC, and keep us updated on the results. New biz owners (and old biz for that matter): feel free to contact us at info@liqcity.com for marketing opportunities on liQcity. Cheers.

Those Ice Cream shops better hurry up so they could catch the the summer season.

I have walked by the Peruvian place several times but see no action. I hope it does really happen.

LIQcity it is great to have you back!!!

Yay for Peruvian restaurant! Finally, something different (and none of that fusion stuff)

#5 Anonymous / 1 year ago

The beer bistro sounds interesting too. Great stuff! Nice to have some new options.

I stopped by Little Oven, the new macroon bakery on Jackson Ave., on Saturday afternoon w/a friend. The people operating it are very friendly and they gave us samples – which were delicious!

Little Oven is delightful! The macaroons are delish! YAY! for Peruvian restaurant. Pumpernickel needs to be open on the weekends for the locals and not just Citigroup. I went over there 2 weekends ago and to my disappointment, they were closed. I had to trek back to Tozt where the bagels leave something to be desired.

#8 Anonymous / 1 year ago

They should put a Trader Joe’s in the neighborhood.

#9 Anonymous / 1 year ago

#8 Bricktown bagels are not bad. They are made onsite and are super hot and fresh on the weekends. Definitely way better than Tozt!

There is nothing better than Peruvian ceviche!!!! Hooray! This is really exciting, as is th ebeer joint!

Is Alewife going to be run by the same guy who owned Lucky Mojo’s or does it have new management?

#12 Anonymous / 1 year ago

also saw them packing up the union office next to court square diner on jackson

Modern Spaces is moving into the Nook & Cranie space. I thought real estate offices were supposed to be discreet. That is a good space being wasted…

#14 Anonymous / 1 year ago

I agree with #14.
Why real estate office in such a good space??

#15 Anonymous / 1 year ago

Aye, another latin fusion restaurant.

The Burger Garage has great premium hand dipped ice cream. They offer shakes, cups and cones. Vanilla, Chocalate, Strawberry, Banana and Coffee are the current flavors!!

#18 Anonymous / 1 year ago

burger garage is $$$, and i still left there hungry. they need to lower prices

#19 Anonymous / 1 year ago

#15 because who else can pay the rent they are asking? $6500 is not even true, it’s more than that, but even if it is true, that’s a lot of rent for a mom and pop. only dunkin donuts or a real estate office would pay them. don’t blame the brokers. they will go wherever they can go. blame the landlord. he/she is the one with the responsibility to the community. sorry but if you have a retail space on vernon, please think before you rent. its such a disgrace how the LIC corner deli has sat like blight for what, 2 years now? horrible shame.

#20 Anonymous / 1 year ago

But what happened to La Vuelta (44th Drive between 11th & Vernon)? The sign says it’s closed for renovation, but I haven’t seen any work on it. Hope it survives.

#21 Anonymous / 1 year ago

Sopa, Peruvian food is not “latin fusion”…it’s just Peruvian…

#22 Anonymous / 1 year ago

Doesn’t the guy who owns Modern Spaces own buildings in the neighborhood? Or I thought I heard that his dad does. Is it possible his dad owns the building and not actually charging that amount for rent at all? Not trying to start a conspiracy theory, just curious. If I’m wrong, them I’m wrong and I apologize.

#23 Anonymous / 1 year ago

#23 You’re wrong. They don’t own that building. It is owned by someone else who rented the retail unit to the brokers. Guys, they rented the space. It’s totally legit.

#24 Anonymous / 1 year ago

Of course it’s legit – no one is saying it isn’t. It’s just that, well, it’s ugly and impractical. We need shops, not real estate offices…

#25 Anonymous / 1 year ago

To my neighbors pushing for a Trader Joe’s: it will bring a tremendous amount of traffic to the neighborhood. People will be coming from far and wide to shop here – is that what y’all really want?

And this is coming from someone who loves TJ’s. If it came here, it’d be so packed that it may be more of a burden than blessing.

#26 Time's Up / 1 year ago

I agree with #15. That deli has been empty for way too long. And what’s up with Cassino? It’s PRIME REAL ESTATE, and the owner doesn’t want anything to go there, he’s doing everything he can to keep it empty. Actually don’t the people that own Cassino also own the Deli?
They have a responsibility to the community as an owner to put something there that will be good for the neighborhood.

#27 Anonymous / 1 year ago

I don’t know that they have “a responsibility”. If you own something, you should be able to do what you want with it. But it would nice to have those spaces filled with some sort of store…

#28 Anonymous / 1 year ago

If the Alewife rumor is true, then this is their other location in Baltimore. Looks freakin’ amazing!

#26, if TJ would bring people outside of this neighbor, it would be even better.
It would boost the local business (restaurants and bars..etc).

#30 Anonymous / 1 year ago

#29, I’m with you! That’s exactly the type of place I’m looking for. I hope they keep the Kobe Hot Dog!

#31 Anonymous / 1 year ago

I really hope the guy who runs OurLIC doesn’t get to these new restaurants. He doesn’t seem to be doing Lounge 47, Testaccio or Madera any favors.

#32 Anonymous / 1 year ago

All those that blame the landlords, #2o, put yourselves in their shoes. You are probably one of the people who RENT here and didnt BUY in the neighborhood. The landlords who rent these spaces see these tenants come and go, as you can see by all of the empty spaces mothly on Vernon Blvd. They are in business to make money just like everyone else. Everyone who claims to support these mom and pop shops walks into Duane Reade instead of shopping at Vernon Pharmacy, stop talking out of both sides of your mouth. If you are going to talk about it, be about it, dont do in halfway. Most people who rent in LIC dont even shop or eat in LIC as far as I am concerned.
