Bike Sale in LIC tomorrow, Saturday August 16th, Recycle-a-Bicycle

From Recycle-a-Bicycle:
LIC Bike street sale returns for one last day, Saturday, August 16, 2008, 12-4pm. 46th Avenue at 5th Street, Long Island City.
“These bikes have been refurbished by our summer youth employment interns. All bikes certified by a mechanic and come with a 30 day warranty to be honored at either of our retail stores.”

I read this last week and refrained from having my say. But now that Charlie opened up the floor…
I hope they pay these teenagers. Employment is a paid job; interning is a form of indentured servitude.
Is there any update about the proposed bike lane on Vernon Blvd.? I noticed that the army-navy store owner posted a message on QW.com against the lane on Vernon Blvd and in favor of it on 11th St.
I guess it depends on who’s running the internship program, and what any underlying (unstated) motives there might happen to be. This one appears to be a reputable program, affilliated with NYC schools. The kids are learning a trade, and they appear to learn a little bit about small business.
Intern programs are generally not paid positions, but many give a small stipend for expenses. I don’t know if this one does, but they do have an “Earn-a-bike” program.
Check out their website, and read the part describing the program.

It is a good operation but too bad the condo craze folks are taking the building away in 2 years, so no more youth programs teaching kids a skill working on bikes in this area. Not a surprise at all.Pretty soon Gantry park will be just for the people who live right in front of it.
# Got any basis for the two years’ comment or are you just guessing?

I just think this heading deserved at least one post.
