Borden Ave Bridge Blues: Hunters Point’s industrial highway still severed

Borden Ave Bridge going towards Hunters Point, Long Island City – Photo

Ye olde Borden Ave Bridge – literally, it was built in 1908 – is the small but hugely important bridge on the industrial highway-like Borden Ave. It’s the best and easiest way to get to the waterfront off the LIE. Hunters Point Ave (aka 49th Ave) is the current detour, running parallel to Borden. But it heavily bottlenecks at the Hunters Point Ave exit, because of all the diverted traffic from Borden. Check out this aerial view.

Necessary repairs on the bridge have been underway for months, until contaminated soil was discovered on the site and has since interfered with reparation, which is unfortunately a familiar tune for folks ’round these parts. According to the NYC DOT:

“At this time, a date for the resumption of work is unknown which precludes an accurate prediction of a new anticipated completion date, although every effort will be made to complete the project in the Spring of 2010.”

I can’t believe this bridge is still not repaired. They could have built a new bridge faster!

No, 2. Actually, it probably would take decades for the city to do anything as bold as build a new 200-foot-long bridge today. And it would go tens of millions of dollars over budget and start to fall apart in a few years.

I love this: “although every effort will be made to complete the project in the Spring of 2010.” The weasly passive voice words of unaccountable do-nothing bureaucrats.
