Fourth of July in Long Island City more chill this year

Middle of the road. Vernon Blvd, Hunters Point, LIC

Happy Independence Day Long Island City. Most businesses in Hunters Point seem to be staying open this weekend, so it’s not likely to be the predicted ghost town. However, the loss of the fireworks this year won’t make it the July 4th weekend what it usually is around here: packed to the gills and with every parking spot in Hunters Point eliminated by NYPD. Throngs and throngs of people at the waterfront and in every bar, restaurant, & cafe in Vernon/Jackson.

Anyway… the only store closings we know for sure are Matted LIC and Rustica, who are both closed Sat – Mon; Subdivision closed on Sat. Everything else pretty much open all weekend. In fact, Ethereal Boutique is having a blowout summer sale this weekend in honor of Independence Day. Friday, July 3th – Sunday, July 5th. 20 – 50% off on most items in the store. (Open until 5pm on Sat.) 47-38 Vernon Blvd, 718.482.8884

If you are sticking around this weekend and looking for things to do, don’t forget about PS1′s Summer Warm Up party on Saturday, which is FREE for Long Island City residents, just bring ID with LIC address, or ID & piece of mail with your LIC address. And chances are good of scoring a hammock at the new extension of Gantry Park.

liQcity is off until Tuesday, enjoying the summery weather. Cheerio.

I noticed last week that I could see the fireworks from the Hudson from my 8th floor apartment. I think LIC will still have a view of fireworks.

I went into Matted. Underimpressed with their non-framing items- just looked like a pile of crap.

I can’t see anything out my window except a bunch of towers, but they symbolize this great country, land of capitalist opportunity and political favoritism. Have a happy and safe Fourth.

Oh Townie. I think you need some new friends. And a hobby or two.

Townie needs to get laid. We all know that.

Oh Townie. He seems to be full of whit and intellect and the ability to use it quite artfully. Not quite sure what getting laid has to do with it. What would I do without his repartee? I personally am looking forward to a lovely, quiet, 4th for a change! So to all out there…I hope your 4th is what you want it to be!

Ideally #5, by someone way nicer than you.

What a great quiet weekend here. One of the best July 4th’s ever. I feel sorry for folks fromother neighborhoods that came here anyway.

Could you see any fireworks from LIC this weekend?

I got the feeling that a lot of people did not get the memo about the fireworks being on the Westside this year or like me thought that we were still going to get a glimpse of them. The fireworks were barely visible from the piers. I thought they would be able to clear the skyline but apparently they don’t go up that high. I was sitting in the new park waiting to catch a glimpse and decided to go up to my apartment where I was able to get a slightly better view of the fireworks.

It was so nice this 4th in LIC without the crowds for the fireworks. The parties were great and the fireworks were better on the widescreen with outrown patriotic music playing. Wouldn’t mind it staying this way.

12, 13.. Jeez folks, get a room. :-)

Where? At the Ravel?

#15 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

my friends in Bedstuy could see the whole thing from their roof… less to block it down there I guess though.

I was on the ground in Bushwick so had to settle for the local DIY fireworks. Oh well.

I saw partly obstructed fireworks from a roof on UES

#17 Anonymous / 2 years, 7 months ago

With 12 fireworks not obstructed.

I enjoyed my fourth of July … had dinner at Shi and then went to the West side to see the fireworks display!

I was not familiar with this fact.

Well done, Townie.

So have you gotten a room at the Ravel with #12 from the other thread yet?

;)

This belongs on the Belgian thread. My bad!$

And I’ve now just read the updates here; so how were the fireworks for #12?
