Hunters Point Condos

How safe is LIC? Are there hookers & crack addicts? Occasionally.

We seem to have accidentally tripped a nerve yesterday with Arris Lofts dwellers who are concerned that our citing a rumor about hookers at Arris Lofts will give a bad impression of the neighborhood.

Let’s get a few things right on the table. liQcity is a blog. Curbed is a blog. Blogs deal in rumors and hearsay. None of the information on this or any other blog is pure fact. In fact (ha), most of it is just opinion. So treat it as such.

More relevantly, LIC is a transitioning industrial neighborhood in New York City. That much I’m sure we all can agree on. While Hunters Point is definitely safer than one might expect, there are still plenty of shady spots, and illicit activity absolutely transpires. To what degree? Well that’s the grey area. I’ve seen used condoms strewn about at Gantry Park - where they hookers or an overexcited couple who just put down 20% at the 5th St Lofts? Who knows.

And yes, I’ve seen hookers in LIC. I’ve seen crack addicts. All in Courthouse Sq. A couple of years back, my friend (female) was attacked on Sunday morning going down the subway stairs on Jackson Ave. Hunters Point. There was a random stabbing on Vernon a while ago. There was a murder last week. View59 dwellers have to walk by Scandals, a gentlemen’s club, everyday to get to the subway. Granted Queens Plaza and Hunters Point are worlds apart in someways, but it’s still LIC turf.

That being said, there’s a very strong police presence by the waterfront thanks to all the new development. It’s definitely safe enough, and as more people move in, it’s feeling even cozier. Courthouse Sq during the day is bustling with people - it’s as safe as any other busy hub and perhaps even hooker free. But LIC has tons of desolate spots, and some of them near the Arris Lofts as well. Especially near the rail yard. So yeah, hookers are plausible, but are they really a phantom menace at Arris? Seems to be that issues with the developers around completion of the building are much more menacing.

On the bright side Arris dwellers, at least you have some hot doormen and concierge staff.

I don't even know why having hookers around is a "safety" issue... you are totally safe if you don't solicit them. No big deal.

My only personal crime run-in was that my bike got jacked from out front my apartment, but that's mainly my fault for not having a better chain (I had a cable... but it was an old bike I didn't think was worth anything... garage sale $25 is where I got it). Oh well.

Wasn't there a rape at the G Train Stop on Jackson Ave a few years ago also?

#2 DC / 5 months ago

Yep and there was a lot more in the UWS and UES. Kids lets remember we are not in Kansas anymore so keep your eyes open and play it safe.

Yes, it's very comforting that there are more rapes on the UES, thank you.

Yeah, emphasis on the waterfront. The rape occurred at the 21st and Van Alst G train stop, and was witnessed by the station clerk and a train conductor. The cops took 15 minutes to get to there, which is so weird, because the precinct house is five minutes from that station. Thanks, 108. (By the way, the rapist was never caught.)

There are sex workers in the Court Square/Queens Plaza area day and night. Heck, there are escorts who work out of the Avalon. It's more of a "broken windows" issue than a danger to the baby bourgeoisie homesteaders. Sure, they bring in an unsavory element, but a lot of their clientele wear suits.

oh please is right! saying there are sex workers in "Court Square/Queens Plaza" is like saying there are sex workers in the"Times Square/Columbus Circle" area. Do you really live around here? There's literally like a half a mile difference between these two areas. Don't get me wrong, court square is still pretty desolate and it would certainly spice up the hood if there were prostitutes hanging around the area, but I've honestly never seen one hanging out in front of the court house. Perhaps they dress like lawyers?

Apologies, I should have said "the Court Square and Queens Plaza areas." Between the courthouse and the Plaza proper are plenty of short streets that are dead-ended by the Sunnyside Yards. You can find them there.

Furthermore, I've lived "here" longer than you, and I don't particularly care if there are prostitutes here or not.

P.S. Cafe Henri is hardly what I'd call a pioneer outpost in LIC.

Why would anyone choose to live in LIC over the UWS or UES?

#7 anonymous / 5 months ago

Because it's way cheaper and there are fewer yuppies and families and fratboys and upscale BS. Those neighborhoods are lame. And it's way easier to get to Williamsburg/Greenpoint from here. But still easy if you've gotta get to midtown for your dang dayjob.

Whoever has never seen a hooker in courthourse square must only be going there during the daytime. At night, CS is a whole different ballgame. Though it's gotten better over the last couple years.

Hi guys - nice comments. Just for clarification, hookers do not necessarily make a neighborhood more dangerous. The point is that LIC is still mostly industrial, and at night especially desolate. Seems like there's some 'living in a bubble' thinking going on about LIC that just because there are $800+/SF condos, that the area is free from illicit going-ons. It's not. Be alert and watch out. I didn't mention in the post bc I didn't want a free-for-all about all the bad things that happen in LIC because mostly it's quiet and peaceful, but I've also been chased by a van twice while on my bicycle and on foot. Both times at night, and traveling from DK to HP. Bad shit of course happens anywhere and everywhere - LIC is not immune, and hookers don't necessarily increase the likelihood.

liQcity - u sound like a tool. where do you live and what do you do beside write a shitty, unknowledgeable blog?

#12 Anonymous / 5 months ago

I like him/her. It's a nice contrast to the polished/upscale/trendy/yuppie image of the neighborhood those condo people are trying to sell. He's telling it like it is.

#13 Brandon / 5 months ago

telling it with a bias, sounds like a tool. anyway, i live in several nabes in manhattan, no one would say the upper east or west sides were filled with crack addicts and prostitutes, but you see them everyday up there for real. been living in lic for several years myself (a couple of apts) never seen a pro neat court sq or the waterfront, no crack addicts either, queens plaza, yes, but it seems to be changing there already.

#15 Yusef Hawkins / 5 months ago

I believe there are hookers in Cleveland too, Yusef.
