Hunters Point Wines & Spirits keepin it real on Vernon Blvd

Vern-Jax’ers may not have a grocery store, but we certainly have an abundance of places to pick up booze. But booze is hardly what Hunters Point Wines & Spirits is selling in their remarkably beautiful storefront on Vernon Blvd between the 47th’s. Owner Paul Huston has been in the wine business for 30 years and not only does he know wine, but he’s also an LIC lifer. I think I’ve seen a lot of change in 4 years… imagine what LIC must have been like 30 years ago. It certainly wouldn’t have hosted a store like this.

HP Wines specializes in hard-to-find handcrafted bottles, as opposed to what Huston refers to as ‘mass-produced commercial horseshit’. And from the looks of things, he’s telling the truth. I spent this morning chatting with Mr. Huston, who like all good wine connoisseurs, is passionate about his product and showed me an artisan crafted sake produced and hand delivered to the emperor of Japan. It’s probably not hand delivered to Vernon, but it’s definitely a great example of the rare treats stocked on those gorgeous shelves. Which includes a great selection of spirits, as well as organic and biodynamic wines.

Like all good wine shops, there’s regular tastings on Thursday and Friday eves from 6-8pm in the larger back showroom. Stop by tonight with your Valentine for a quick sip of something yummy and obscure. I heard him mention he’s got some pink Prosecco for Valentine’s Day, so maybe you’ll get a little bubbly.

  • Website:Hunters Point Wines & Spirits
  • Delivery: yes
  • Prices: Excellent fancy options, tons of bottles under $50, and many under $20. Can you get a bargain? Absolutely.
  • Final Verdict: We’re lucky to have this store.

wow, so you’re editing comments now?

It’s ok for Paul to critisize commercial wineries in “vulgar” terms, but it’s not ok to make a comment about his “vulgarity”. Freeom of speech “LiQcity style”:)

hahaha - actually there’s an issue with the comment server. you can repost your obnoxious commentary. other comments were lost as well. freedom of speech exists on liQcity - but yeah, editing comments is a grey area. I have my standards…. but whatever, people recognize it as people just spewing crap. I do however remove homophobic and offensive comments that target identified people. This is a neighborhood blog, and we are a community. If you don’t like it - don’t read this blog.

My post was not meant to be obnoxious — it was an honest opinion. Certainly Paul has a right to take pride in his collection of artisan wines, but there is no reason for him to denigrate the many fine commercial wineries that exist….that to me is obnoxious and what I meant by “wine snobbery”.

fair enough.

All of the wines and spirits I see in the picture of Paul seem to be mass-produced. As are many of the wines I see in his store. I guess if you like spending your money with an old bitter windbag then you should totally go to Hunters Point.
