Jackson Ave & 11th St intersection might actually become safe to cross

New Rental building at Jackson Ave & 11th St, LIC

Pulaski Bridge intersection, Hunters Point, Long Island City

Last night at the committee meeting regarding traffic and transportation in Long Island City (specifically Hunters Point), the DOT gave a presentation of their proposal to make the Jackson Ave & 11th St intersection a little bit safer for human beings to get across. The proposal includes:

  • the construction of a pedestrian crosswalk at the base of the bridge with increased sidewalk refuges
  • greening up some of the traffic islands, with a few scattered benches
  • rerouting right turning traffic off the bridge in order to increase pedestrian crossing time without creating bottleneck on the bridge
  • making 49th St (Hunters Point Ave) one way off the bridge (currently two-way)

The proposal does call for the loss of some parking on Jackson Ave, but also the creation of new parking on 49th St. There are other components to the proposal, which is supposed to be up on the DOT site, but it is difficult to find. When it’s found, it’ll be added to this post.

If the CB2 approves the proposal in February, the changes to the intersection could be implemented and completed by the end of May 2009. Committee members offered other suggestions to the proposal (which contains more components than listed above), but overall it was met with general approval.

#1 it was funny the first few times you posted this but now it is a little old.

49th St (meaning Ave., I think) would be one way where? Between Hunters View and L haus? I’m confused by that.

Yes. When the DOT site starts working properly, the map makes it more clear. 49th would go off the Pulaski only, now it goes both ways.

“greening up some of the traffic islands, with a few scattered benches”

Only in NYC are traffic islands in the middle of a crazy intersections filled with traffic considered great places to place park benches. And who besides the occasional drunk is going to sit there?

2, I disagree. No. 1 wasn’t even funny the first time. He reminds me of that strange guy you see at most parties who no one seems to want to talk to and ends up getting way too drunk and kicked out for annoying everyone with his lame routine.

Overall good ideas. I am not a fan of benches in the middle of an intersection either as there will be nothing relaxing about sitting there (and why would someone?).
But overall it sounds like a good plan that will slow things down a bit and make the intersection safer.

#5 – It’s for someone who is disabled, handicapped, elderly or for any other reason needs to sit down for a second while stuck in the middle of a traffic intersection because they can’t cross the entire length of the street in the time allotted.

Now this building is a real eye sore. How cheap could the developer get? Another brick box with holes as windows and pasted on ornaments to dress it up.
