LICBDC paints the town white; free roof-painting for LIC building owners

View from Prestige Condo deck, LIC

The LICBDC is teaming up with the Mayor’s Office to offer free, energy saving white roof painting to the owners of Hunters Point residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.

“Many scientists and government agencies have found that applying a white coating to building roofs keeps them cooler in summer, lowering air conditioning use and electric bills. This is a high priority for Mayor Bloomberg. LICBDC is partnering with the Mayor’s Office of Long Term Sustainability and the Office of Operations to have volunteers from NYC Service coat the roofs of a number of LIC buildings. Roll out will take place in July. Both labor and special high reflectivity white paint will be supplied by the Mayor’s Office.”

The LICBDC notes that “this is one of the rare times when something that sounds too good to be true is really true. Not only is the labor to paint your roof free, but the paint and supplies for your roof are free as well.” In order to participate, contact Dan Miner at the LICBDC at 718.786.5300 x 27 or danminer@licbdc.org as soon as possible.

Ah. Ours is silver… probably does much of the same. Although it makes it uncomfortable to hang out up there during the day in Summer.

Silver helps for an all over body tan.

The difference now, #2, is that the city has realized that it’s so valuable to the *city* to reduce the heat island effect that the city is willing to foot the bill for repainting roofs.

I noticed the other day that the new pavers in the yet-to-open section of Gantry are now white instead of dark gray like the old ones. We’re seeing lighter color materials mandated all across the city to reduce heat absorption on a much larger scale.

Speaking of that new section of Gantry Park, anyone know when it’s supposed to open officially?
