LIC’s Murray Playground now on the operating table

Construction in Murray Playground, Long Island City

Chalk up Murray Playground as another slice of Long Island City getting ripped up and renovated. The park, which stretches between 21st and 11th Streets, 45th Road and 45th Ave, is getting a new look that’s scheduled for completion in Summer 2010.

Via a sign in the park: “This much-needed renovation will include new play equipment, safety surfacing, paving, fencing, and an innovative new spray shower. In addition, a series of new benches for parents and caregivers will be included, and native plants will be used in the landscaping.”

No word about the dog run or its huge yellow sculpture, critics.

SUCH great news. This place is such a blight on the neighborhood. Any news on the fate of the dog run? I never take my dog there as it’s just a disgusting glorified dust pit.

Great news. I can imagine that #2 and his fellow dog lovers just use the grass by the new playing fields, so all the grass can be killed/dug up and that too can become a “disgusting glorified dust pit”. Why use an actual dog run when you can just have your dog crap or piss on the lawn.

The dog run looks awful.. and that is exactly WHY we have dog runs, because we don’t want all the public lawns to look like that: shit everywhere and dirt dug up and grass dying. Why don’t the dog owners mobilize the same way they have done for the getting access to shit on the public grass in order to make the dog run nice? You rather just complain about it? While I am at it, can you please do something about the pee that is all over the sidewalk next to the poo?

With all the dog spas our there, why can’t one of these private businesses open their own doggy run? Charge customers to visit and exercise their dogs. Why must scarce, taxpayer-funded open space be set aside for dog runs, which inevitably encourage just more crap, noise and ugliness?

Let’s be honest. Any area that allows dogs has over time become disgusting. The response to date has been to request new areas. Like locust the dogs enter an area devour and destroy the resources and then move on to the next site. I for one enjoy the sense of accountability being brought back to the public discourse.

Wow, I never realized there were so many dog-hating people here. I am the one who referred to the dog run as a disgusting glorified dust pit, and for the record, I don’t have my dog crap or piss on the lawn. I take him to the dog run down by the water, which is not a disgusting, and is not a dust pit. It’s covered in rocks and therefore remains cleaner for everyone. Dog runs, as a matter of fact, do not have to look like shit, with dirt dug up and grass dying, as #’s 4 and 6 seem to suggest. If we really want to praise accountability being brought back to public discourse, then I’d suggest we temper the absolutist contentions that sugget that all dogs ruin our public spaces, all dog owners are ruining your collective lives, and that all dog runs have to look like shit. Sheesh!

As typical of the Parks Department, the posted plans do not show the artificial turf cover planned for the sports field just to the west of the childrens playground.
As most of you know, this petroleum based product is under rigorous debate throughout the City inlcuding the “green” at the Hunters Point South proposed open space. Plastic grass heats up so badly on summer days that is becomes unusable, harbors bacteria from bird excrement, air pollution and sweat causing infections in humans, releases harmful volatile organic compounds and smells so bad that windows facing the park will have to be kept closed.

This product is slated to be installed this Summer and can be confirmed with Community Board 2. A meeting about the park renovation is to be held at the Board sometime in January.

I am actually a dog lover, but do not think its appropriate to own a dog in the city. I am also just stating the facts – dogs crap and piss on the streets. I always love the way ‘responsible dog owners who seem to think that if they pick up the ‘deuce’ that this makes your dog somehow clean. What about big ol’number one? Your dog at best is still relieving himself 3-5 times a day on the sidewalks, stinky up the streets. A human does it we get a ticket, but the big Great dane I saw the other day take a whiz on the street, like 2 gallons worth, that somehow gets a pass. Lastly no matter if you do pick up the ‘deuce’ you are not picking up ALL of the deuce! Lovely schmear along the sidewalk! So do not give me the its not me, its the other dog routine. Yes some dog owners are better then others but ALL dog owners foul the neighbourhood.

More frighting is the idea of all that urine sitting on the plastic artificial turf, festering and stinking to high heaven. At least rain can wash down through real grass and nature eventually cleans a spot even if it’s used next week.
