Long Island City traffic concerns: 49th Ave & the Pulaski Bridge

Fall on 48th Ave, LIC

49th Ave & Vernon, Long Island City

An online petition was recently started to make several much-needed traffic changes to 49th Avenue.

It reads as follows:

“We, the undersigned, request that Queens’ Community Board #2 (CB2), related agencies and elected officials, advocate on behalf of the residents (families, seniors and individuals), businesses and visitors in CB2′s district to the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) for:

  1. Installation of an ALL-WAY STOP SIGN at the corner of 5TH STREET AND 49TH AVENUE, LONG ISLAND CITY, 11101.

  2. Conversion of 49th AVENUE (between Vernon Boulevard and 5th Street) FROM a TWO-WAY street TO an EASTBOUND ONE-WAY street.

  3. Addition of TWO SPEED BUMPS in front of ‘Andrew’s Grove’ city park and playground on the south side of 49th AVENUE (between Vernon Boulevard & 5th Street.)”

The Pulaski Bridge has also undergone some changes in the recent. Earlier this summer the DOT made improvements to the traffic flow on the LIC side, but the already narrow pedestrian pathway has now been split to accommodate cyclists with a bike lane, much to pedestrians’ chagrin. Late last month various organizations actually resolved to form a coalition to help relieve some of the congestion on the bridge.

How about a traffic light/stop signs at the corner of 5th Street & 47th Avenue? Drivers are CONSTANTLY zooming down the road right there, often while on cell phones. It’s just a question of time before somebody gets killed.

There are stops signs there, but a four way stop sign similar to the intersection of 5th and 48th might be more appropriate.

Side note, I was secretely happy to see cars towed last week when they were filming White Collar on 5th and 47th. Some of those cars had been sitting there for months without being moved once. While I am completely opposed to alt side parking and street cleaning, I’m happy to see people abusing the free parking in the area got their comeuppance.

I would welcome alternate side of the street parking. There are several cars that treat my block like a long-term parking lot. One vehicle hasn’t moved in over two months; others stay for multiple weeks at a time. This is becoming a big problem in the area, making it increasingly difficult for residents, businesses and visitors.

We need the crossing guard on 49 & 5th moved back to 48th & 5th. It is just crazy to have her on 49. 48th is such a bigger street with so much more traffic.

There was a broken down corvette (an ugly one if you can imagine that) parked outside my house in Hunters Point for TWO STRAIGHT YEARS without being moved. With Jersey plates. It even had a tarp over it for a while. The police in LIC are useless. Useless.

6, the police seem to be on their toes when they raid local restaurants for no reason.

#7 What restaurant was raided?

I agree 100 percent with #2!

You can always do what some people I know have done. Call sanitation to remove the 2 year corvette. When they don’t have license plates…they will pick them up.

It doesn’t help that our police department is one of the biggest abusers of leaving abandoned cars on neighborhood streets.

Abandoned car’s are not the police jurisdiction. It’s sanitation, only when the plates are removed. Wink wink, nod nod.
