The Titanic House has set sail – right out of Long Island City

Former exterior of the Titanic House on 11th St, Hunters Point, LIC

Anyone traveling down 11th St in Hunters Point would have a hard time missing the Titanic House. Started by Joe Coletti to fill the absence of a proper monument to the tragedy in NYC, his house became nothing short of a neighborhood curiosity – popping up on the internet and in the news, and of course, often stopping the unsuspecting passerby in their tracks.

The Titanic House has been a fixture in LIC for years, but a local tipster has informed us that Joe has apparently vacated the neighborhood and the memorabilia has been displaced. Via Queens Crap, he’s moved to Sunnyside and left his collection in the hands of the Greater Astoria Historical Society. Some of the items can also supposedly be found at Vernon Blvd’s Nook n’ Crannie.

Godspeed, Joe, and thanks for always keeping the memories afloat in LIC.

Wow, that’s sad. I loved walking by it and telling people the story. I wonder why he left LIC now after growing up here? And why Sunnyside?!? Florida, I could see, but Sunnyside?

He left because he couldn’t stand listening to all the new residents that said nasty things about him and called him names as they passed his window.

I think you guys (and you know who you are) should understand that people live on the other side of those windows that you walk by and we hear you loud and clear.

# 2 I can tell you first hand how you can hear through the windows. I’ve over heard several conversations people were having – not realizing how loud they were actually talking.

I think most people do not realize that our bedrooms are usually on the other side of the those windows.

I’m awakened several times a nite by people chatting as they walk by, but when they actually stop and chat under my window it is most annoying. I’ve been tempted to throw a bucket of water out the widow, but I know they don’t do it intentionally. They are just so not aware of things.

If you have a quirky, attention-getting monument to the Titanic right outside your rowhouse’s bedroom window, you shouldn’t be at all surprised that you’ll attract many people having conversations you might find annoying.

I knew something was up the other morning when I saw trash on the sidewalk on that block. Joe was a stickler for clean and kept that block in top shape. Sad to see him go.

What a pity! I loved that house. It always made me smile…

I can’t belive my comment about selling Titanic memorabilia at Nook & Cranie was deleted. This is ridiculous! What was wrong with that?

Hello #8. We didn’t delete any comments on this post… it must not have cleared properly.

So sad; I’m hearing about this now. I always loved to point this place out when showing off the neighborhood to visitors. It was such a unique attraction, and it’s distressing to hear of its passing.
