What is that mysterious, large antenna recently planted in Queenswest?

Unidentified Planted Object, Queenswest, Long Island City
Via the liQcity inbox:
“My roommate and I are a bit ticked off at this new ominous “structure” located between the drive opening of East Coast 6 and The View. From the ground it appears innocent to some extent but from above it seems like some kind of evil satellite or RF type receiver. What’s even more angering is how it has been installed right next to the Eastcoast 6 building (rental) and not the newly erected The View (owner).
Our main concern is that it is right near the heads of us and our neighbors and we are aware of the dangers from prolonged exposure to “waves” whichever type they may be. Furthermore no one has been able to explain to us what it is or what the heck it does. It is not anywhere in the plans for the landscape and we feel it should be a transparent situation when mysterious items are added to our environment.
We examined the “structure” closely and noticed cabling leading to a main box in the ground which inflamed our suspicions more. It started out with a single wire leading into the ground (we thought it may have been a testing cable of some sort), then the installation of a permanent underground concrete box. This is now, as I write this, being covered with dirt. We both have extensive knowledge of communication devices, residential and commercial and it looks too odd to just be a street light or some other harmless installation.
With the UN right across the way we have always debated the presence of surveillance in the area but this is so blunt it’s no longer a debate. We wanted to know if any LiqCity readers or admins had any clue to what this may be so we can cease our paranoia.”
The View is rent-to-own or, soon, completely rental, so they’re not biased exposing rental people to RF.
Mork has land ed and is sending out signals in search of Mindy. He heard she was living at EC6 but she’s not responding. Til then – nanu – nanu!
#2 Renters have little to no leverage over the placement of things than owners or potential/future owners do. Although, if I lived in that bottom floor space right near it in The View I would be just as concerned.
#3 Funny but not funny, if this is indeed some sort of comm device (based on the look of it, it more than likely is) it should be moved away from where people reside.
It appears to be some type of water feature. The bottom is connected to PVC pipes and there is a water fountain attached to the whole apparatus.
Does look a little odd.
maybe I am naive but I live in EC 7 and I thought it was some kind of artdeco sculpture/waterfountain for the park they are building. I saw them wheeling in a 2nd one yesterday. They were planting trees today, it might be art, strange as that maybe…I think you people are a bit paranoid..sorry
it’s steely dan.
People are obviously paranoid… do you know how many other health hazards already around you in LIC? There are power lines, power plants, oil spills, ground contaminants, cell phones, auto fumes all over the place…
…#8 you forgot the people that speed down 5th St. like it is the LIE. That is my #1 LIC health hazard!
its signage for the gantry plaza park.
I agree with #9, LIC is a toxic waste dump (quite literally) and you have no rights as a renter. Move to Park Slope and be done with it.
Maybe it’s Toll Brother’s latest great buying incentive to fool people into purchasing overpriced apartments at 5th street lofts – they’ll toss is a gyrating tool. Maybe it’s their “virtual doorman”?
yeah, it generates subliminal “buy, buy, buy” sound waves.
I guarantee that your exposing yourself to more direct radiation by using your cellphone than by anything this thing could produce. Ya know, the whole radiative power as a function of distance cubed rule….
#14 – Finally, someone who understands the science of wavelengths.
Well – This bit of news sent to the un-informed by the un-informed has made it to curbed where the commenters over there can once again have their way with finding yet another excuse for making fun of LIC. So, liqcity, has it occurred to you ,as a purveyer of news to the community, to contact Rockrose and ask them directly what this strange object is? I agree with the commenter here who, upon close observation, saw a second one come in plus a tree bring planted, and decided that it is a fountain being installed as part of the park that is in the early stages of its design. Perhaps you can check this out and become “informed”. Until I am told otherwise, I stand behind my “Mork and Mindy”theory.
#16 is the artist?
How can that object be art? Or a water fountain? It looks so evil…
#16 is a broker/developer I think. Who gives an F about what curbed has to say about LIC?? Personally I find this hysterical, especially if it turns out to be a water fountain. Nanu nanu!
It’s part of the vertebrae of Spinosaurus Rockrosiansis.
Charlie.
#16 here – I am neither a broker nor a developer – Just a resident of LIC having a bit of fun with people jumping to conclusions before they seek answers. Until the truth be known – Nanu – Nanu.
It very well could be the guts of a sprinkler/fountain system which will later be covered up to make it nice and pretty.
#22 – To paraphrase Ayn Rand – I think you may have hit “The Fountain (onthe) Head”. nanu -nanu
Part of the expanded Gantry State Park. About every 4 or 5 years they expand a block of the park. Love NYC development!
I believe that this is the Rockrose Development part of the expansion of Gantry State Park. It is operating on schedule and has already been discussed on the Gantry Park forum on the Queenswst web site.
It’s a FOUNTAIN people. Not a UN surveillance device, and Mork has long since given up on Mindy.
I was just having fun. Of course, we all know what has transpired for Mork over the years. But did you know that Mindy (Pam Dawber) has been happily married for many years to dreamy Mark Harmon (currently on NCIS)?
This is indeed a park fixture, though it’s very understandable why it’s been mistaken as an alien antenna. I have to say, I am not the biggest fan of Rockrose’s practices in the rental buildings. They are very likely to put some dumb antenna right where people live. What they do with the amenities in the buildings is such a racket. You think you are getting access to use the communal space, but you get charged exorbitant fees.
