LIC’s Z-Hotel sleeks it up; supposed Rolex headquarters going up nearby

Z-Hotel de-shrouded, 11th St and 43rd Ave, Long Island City

While traveling on 43rd Ave anywhere near 11th St, it’s pretty much impossible to miss the snazzy new kid on the block: the Z-Hotel.

Since last we checked, Long Island City’s latest hotel has lost its shroud and revealed itself for the gray and glassy, razor-thin wonder that it is.

Via the architect Andre Kikoski’s website:

“Each of the 100 rooms in this boutique hotel offers a spectacular view of Manhattan. The razor-thin 75,000 square foot tower is clad in graphite masonry, charcoal stucco, and black metal to nuance the industrial neighborhood. This color palette carries inside, complemented by custom furniture and textured bronze fabrics lit from concealed coves. Every aspect is designed – from the massing of the tower to the warmth of its aerie interiors – to create a singular and cohesive guest experience.”

No mention of the supposed rooftop bar, but we’re curious to see how two rooftop bar/hotel combos will operate in close proximity to each other (Ravel, ahem).

Another building going up in the same, mostly industrial, vicinity is the formerly unidentified commercial building that is now rumored to be the new Rolex headquarters. That’s right, LIC – the fancy watch guys are comin’ to town.

I like the hotel. I wish the rumored rooftop bar would be more of a rooftop restaurant with a bar. very exciting…

Is the rolex facility office or manufacturing?

I like the look of the hotel. Hope that rumored rooftop bar doesn’t turn into another Ravel-like place.

do people actually stay at all these hotels in the area? anyone know how business is doing?

The hotel looks pretty bland to me and ridiculously out of context. Not sure why it’s getting the raves.

Ugh.. not the context discussion again…

@ 2. Apparently it will be Rolex Corporate Offices.

#4. I actually had the same question until I was asked to suggest hotels right out of Manhattan for some business partners that were looking to save money. I suggested the the new Holiday Inn, The Ravel and the Days Inn in Queensboro Plaza. I was surprised that none of them had vacancy for the days they were looking. This was probably two months ago and it did not fall in any special holiday or event, plus they were not even that cheap.

Rolex, a perfect neighbor and use of this manufacturing zoned area. Welcome to the neighborhood.

6, read the first sentence of the City Zoning. It’s all about context. Like it or not, it’s law.

So since this building is being built in accordance with the law, I would submit that it is in proper context then.

Yes, and I would further submit in regard to the contextual controversy that the builders have so far managed to keep the building off the sidewalk, that is, it appears that it will fit into the pre-existing cultural context of spatial agreement. Also, if I may be forgiven for stating the obvious–and I might not be the first to do so–but this structure, by virtue of the reflective quality of its (mostly) glass exterior, literally, “reflects” the neighborhood, and thereby, by extension, the character of the neighborhood itself. Is there more that anyone could require/request of such an out-of-scale and unwelcome structure? I think not, or at least any protest (particularly here) would probably be a total waste of time. As Fred F. French said, in NYC “there’s no such thing as overdevelopment.”
Let that be a lesson to us all.
Happy New Year! :-)

SO WELL SAID TOWNIE!!!!! Yes it is off the side walk, and it reflects the neighborhood. Your razor whit delights!

The city just needs to obliterate the word contextual fro their BS. THAN we would be on a slightly more straight playing field. Maybe by an inch.
