Mysterious Powerhouse rentals hit the market in Long Island City

Powerhouse Condos, 2nd St & 51st Ave, Hunters Point, Long Island City

Over at Curbed, where they love the juicy goings-on of the LIC real estate market, they received notice of condos gone rental at the Powerhouse. Nothing too surprising there, considering the sales slump, except that upon investigation, it seems the building is not officially offering any units for rent, but a private buyer who purchased many units.

Here’s the offering:

How is it over there? I have heard people moved in.

I’ve been living here for close to 6 weeks. The construction is still on going but they have made a ton of progress. Gym is open and roofdeck is nearly completed (should be by the time it warms up).

This news was already reported over the weekend on the QueensWest website. Also on that website, comments from new residents in the Powerhouse have been ongoing for about 3 wks.

Don’t believe it. I’ll bet these rentals are definitely coming from the developer.

Gosh, how catty is #3?

Those rentals are absolutely from the developer. What a scam. Why don’t they just be up front about it?

I work at 34th St in Manhattan and I brought a condo nears Queeens Plaza becuase I knew the negative downside to being next to only the 7 subway line. At Queens Plaza I dont even need to transfer to get to work and the N R W and V trains rarely go out of service like the 7 train does.

I have a few friends that brought in the powerhouse and some other condos near the water front and they said it has been a nightmare with the 7 train out. They also said its next to impossible to catch a cab in the morning trying to go to work.

I am happy with my choice.

I like #7′s use of the word “brought”

HAHA. #7 did you just cut and paste your comment from Curbed?

What a f’ing joke since the NRW has been out of commission the last few weekends with major track work. But if you actually lived there and weren’t just a broker trying to sell something, you’d know that.

But hey, you definitely have quicker access to strip clubs and the inmates released from Rikers therein Queens Plaza…

the 7 train has been fine lately, besides it’s not that bad of a walk to the E train…or even take the G and transfer to the L…it’s not like you are trapped just because the 7 train is down.

Who would want to pay for a condo in that ugly monstrosity? The apartments need to be 20% nicer than any of the surrounding real estate, at the same cost, just to overcome the hideous exterior factor.

Not to mention that if the middle income housing planned for Hunter’s Point actually gets built, Powerhouse will lose its view.

Good luck with rentals. I’m counting the minutes until we see L Haus rental ads…

I think L haus is far more of an eye sore!! Ugh!!! I kind of like the way the Powerhouse looks, it’s very industrial. It’s nicer than some of the other ugly buildings they have put on the water.

I just read that the total number of apts at Powerhouse available as rentals is 20. So is this really a private investor or Douglas Elliman playing games?

#13 anonymous / 2 years, 10 months ago

I don’t think it is Elliman, but I’ll be shocked if these units weren’t from the developer and not some unrelated investor.

I saw the L Haus on the 7 Train today and the powerhouse. THe L Haus sticks out and grabs attention and doesnt look too bad at all from the train view.

I’m renting in the Powerehouse and I gotta tell you this place is a dog. Classic signs of a project running out of juice and going cheapo on everything. Worst is sound insulation … paper walls, hollow doors. There’s a dog in a unit at the opposite end of the hall, maybe 8-10 apartments way. I can hear it bark clear as day wherever I am well within my apartment. One walks down the halls and confronted by voices … you swear someone just snuck up behind you but it is just other residents speaking in normal voices behind closed doors, but you can hear everything plain as day. So much for privacy. You literly blush when your neigbors are making whoopie, and heaven forbid someone on your floor has a party. The website and promos talk about a fancy intercom system: not there and no sign of it but every apt has a big gaping hole in the wall with wires hanging out where it was planned to be. Nifty pool table finally was put up of the lobby … too bad late at night it’s used by a bunch of nonresidents who look like they belong in a real poolhall. The indoor parking is outdoor parking in a junk lot around the corner available at prices in excess of the indoor lots in the buildings all around there. To add insult to injury, the view is disappearing and fast. The block between the Powerhouse and the river is the first to be developed in the big planned public housing project. The owner of the tennis bubble that is now there shut down and was quoted in the press as saying that the city just told him it is “ready to put a shovel in the ground.” That public housing project will probably be better built than this intended-to-be-high-end condo….

Sound insulation at the Powerhouse is a major problem. Plus the primo view of the new public housing project is unavoidable at this point.
