Name That Development: 46th & 5th st, Hunters Point LIC

Construction at 46th and 5th streets in Hunters Point

Right behind (or in front of, depending on your perspective) the Rockrose fortress, I found a corner lot being broken down at 46th & 5th. I asked the guys across the street what was going up…they said a building.

Anyone know what this is?

Here’s a great shot of the no parking sign. Street and graffiti artists, where are you? This wall is screaming for attention.

No parking skull and crossbones at 46th and 5th street in Hunters Point

I have a special interest in the homemade no parking signs of LIC construction sites. My special interest is in parking in front of them on purpose since it’s illegal for them to block off parking without a permit. Zero to none of them usually obtain the permits… but that doesn’t stop them from having people towed. (I keep promising that story, but I haven’t acquired the proper photographs so I can’t tell it just yet. Patience.)

Parking is at such a premium in the city - why doesn’t the construction site have to show a permit to the towing company? Is there any recourse for car owners who are illegally towed from these construction sites?

Isn’t this where the recycle a bicycle used to be? I heard they moved to DUMBO

Recycle a Bicycle is the next block down, on 46th ave.

Isn’t this where they’re considering putting dorms?

Not sure, but recycle a bicycle definitely moved to DUMBO

id- Thanks for the dorm article. That’s interesting. I don’t think this is the same lot though, bc it doesn’t sound like ground has broken for that yet (maybe though, it was a month ago) but also the site is at 46th & 5th…not 47th. But it’s still in the running…

it’s actually possible that this is the site for the dorms - i’m pretty sure this construction site spans the entire block on 5th st from 46th to 47th ave

It seems more likely that they’d use this site on the north side of 47th ave (like Jenni said), which was able to be demolished at once, than the block further south which consists of buildings in various states of use.

Also… Recycle a Bicycle’s retail location is in DUMBO but their office & workshop is here at 46th ave. & 5th st.
