The beautiful red building that escaped landmarking faces the guillotine

Has anyone else noticed the demolition frenzy going on in LIC these last couple of weeks? It’s seriously been picking up. July 2008 is right around the corner, and Rockrose seems to be feeling the heat as well, since activity has begun on their site next to the United Nations Federal Credit Union.

Remember the beautiful building they’re knocking down, that (ahem) might have been landmarked if Queens actually paid attention to the violent raping of its architectural history… ok, we’ll spare you the NIMBY schpeil. You know we’re sad to see this building go. But as you can see from the pic, the scaffolding is going up, and the building is going down. The parking lot behind the building seems to be cleared out as well, and and the All-Too-Familiar crane has replaced the cars.

Wonder if the new workers in the UNFCU building (displaced from the UN building thanks to a large scale renovation) will enjoy the All-Too-Familiar sounds of construction in LIC. It’s always extra-special when it’s the building/site right next to you. Fun times.

RIP Red Building. Goodbye.

Very sad to see the the little red building that could go down.

Amazing they cleared the Cangro lot already.

Does anybody know specifically what Rockrose will be replacing this building with?

Also the scaffolding has gone up for the Old Europa Woodworking building and the adjoining red structure on 48th Ave by Bella Via. Any scoop on this?

What's the likelihood that every 19th and early 20th century building in LIC will be eliminated within the next 10-15 years?

it's funny the title about the guillotine, and the crane kind of looks like it could be one.

This is very sad. I don't usually care about old buildings, but I will say I like this one. liked.

Zero... although the Hunters Point Historic District may become even more of an island than it already is.

I just noticed that they are taking down that building on the north side 0f 44 Dr btw 21st and 23rd Sts, too.

The old must fall to make room for the new.

Can anyone substantiate the rumor that a hotel is going up on 5th street and 47th ave on the south east corner?

Yeah... this red building will be some high rise rental from what I've been reading. Rockrose might change their mind. I would say it was a building worth saving if they didn't knock down buildings around it. Now it looks very out of place. Nice location. Not too close to the elevated 7 train, yet one of the closest buildable block in court sq to the E/V/7 trains. Will have some nice views to the river and then to the office buildings across. Better then views of highways and LIRR train tracks.

Dunno about the 5th st/47th ave hotel rumor.

44th DR/21-23 st - I was with a nearby broker a year ago and she said it's been slated to be a condo at one point. I dunno if the owner is just waiting for funding or what... but it has been slow moving ever since. Suprised it's actually finally getting taken down. Haven't been on the block for some time now. Maybe I will check it out during my lunch break.
