The beginning of the beginning – a glimpse at Hunters Point South
Yesterday, we took a look at the proposed future of Jackson Ave and Queens Plaza, today we have a peek at the promised promise-land of Hunters Point South. Again, brought to us by the NYC Economic Development Corporation:
“The purpose of the proposed action is the implementation of a large-scale, mixed-use development plan, Hunter’s Point South, that provides a substantial amount of affordable housing on publicly owned land and allows for the residential redevelopment of a privately owned adjacent site, Site B. The development of the Hunter’s Point South site would be an integral part of the City’s plan for the provision of affordable housing over the next 10 years. In addition to housing, the Hunter’s Point South site would also include retail uses, community/cultural facility space, a public school, public parkland and other public and private open spaces, and accessory parking. Redevelopment of the privately owned site would include public waterfront access.”
This map is not really news, nor is the development – but in the coming weeks we’ll be taking a closer look at the major development plans in the works for LIC, and there’s so much info to this one, we could do a whole blog on it. But don’t worry, we won’t.
Lame.
YEah, I don’t like this development. The Jackson Ave thing is great, but this just looks like a nightmare.
Double lame.
Does this mean projects!? As in drug infested havens? What does affordable housing mean anyway?
#5 it means queensbridge #2. Just like the original queensbridge, there is a nice ball park to have birthdays and BBQs at on the water.
Good one Jake in registering the domain name to link into Queenswest.com. Now we know who put up the phony PowerhouseLIC website.
For the record, LIQCITY is much better than Queenswest.com
#6 is an idiot. This is going to be 60% market rate, and the rest for people with incomes between $50k and $150k. Hardly Queensbridge. Look at the EDC website for more details.
#5 tone it down.
Besides setting aside housing for hard-working folks on teacher, nurse, or fireman salaries, there are some other really good aspects to this project: lost of new open space, integrated street network, new infrastructure, a bikeway that runs on the entire waterfront, and a new neighborhood retail strip (2nd Street). Finally, something more inclusive is on the horizon in LIC.
Queenswest.com just jumped the shark evern further with that stunt.
#9 that and a whole lot of projects
and dont bother calling the police when the crackden drugwars spill over into your way overpriced closets. the crack dealers were there 1st, and you yuppies ALREADY pissed off the local police pct. maybe your doorman will give a shit, go cry to him.
I never put up a fake powerhouse website, but I do register and hold competing or relevant domains.
Jake
I always wondered how and where one can apply for these middle income apartments?
#13 confirms just how much nicer the area will be once these cranky oldtimers are out.
Competing domains? The internet isn’t a contest.
#17, no it is an anonymous wasteland.
Jake
Jake, there was a hint of jealousy in your comment. LIQCITY rocks!
I like this site, that is why I read it and post here. It is why I have posted link after link from QW to here, put them in the links section and in the FAQ about local blogs.
Jake
Liqcity is awesome and queenswest is good too. I dobelieve they are for different purpose. queenswest isn’t really a blog and liqcity is.
Just my 2 cents.
I like both sites. This one is more newsy and queenswest is more community oriented.
qw went all downhill with their upgrade and once arris started closings…it was exciting times for a while.
good point #23, also the childish remarks like “my building is better than yours” just got too old. sad really, it had some characters.
Queenswest is yesterday’s news. Jake resisted making changes for some time and people simply lost interest. Funny that he admitted to owning the powerhouselic domain though. Didn’t he cheat on the curbed cup as well.
It has been a pleasure being written about on another real estate blog by another set of anonymous posters.
When will I ever learn.
Oh, and you can look it up:
http://whois.domaintools.com/powerhouselic.com
Jake
Jake,
You sure are knowledgable about IT matters. I guess that came in handy when it came to cheating on the Curbed Cup. I agree with those above, Queenswest is past its prime, Liqcity is a better site.
Is there anything wrong with having two good LIC sites?
QueensWest came down too heavy on those who didn’t share the orthodox views of the site and its main posters. It lost many of its interesting perspectives, so, no, it isn’t a compelling site anymore. But if you need a website to find out what nail salon in the neighborhood gives the best manicure, then QW.com is for you.
Queens West is still a good site, I still check there frequently for news, but lately I find LIQ to be more enjoyable. Several reasons. The new website at QW is a mess. It’s impossible to find what you are looking for and to see what is new. Don’t care to go rooting around several layers of pages just to find a new post. QW is far too chummy. Very often it feels like a clubhouse of Jake’s friends with inside jokes, etc. Too restrictive – don’t post that here, why did you start a new thread for this. I can do without the reprimands. Lastly the whole Citylights vs. Arris thing that spilled over to Curbed left a bad taste in my mouth. We should be rooting for all building s in LIC instead of pitting them against each other. Jake, take this as constructive criticism.
Getting back on subject, HPS may have no affordable housing by the time its build if previous initiative like this are any indication.
QW came down hard on posters who were engaging in personal attacks on individuals and neighborhood businesses. Many of those attacks were hurtful and harmful. I thank Jake for running a site that is fair and ethical.
I like LiQcity, but I just want to remend you that it is a blog where people can hide behind anonymous whereas QW is a website where posters are required to have real identities.
Since I have no identity here, I shall remain anonymous.
The distinction between being anonymous and having a screen name is minor. It’s the content of the remarks that matter, and that’s why I like LIQcity. People are respectful on this site, even if they are anonymous.
#30 is right – QW became a hangout of Jake’s buddies, who got away with personal attacks with no reprimands. The site isn’t inclusive enough. It’s like a MySpace page for the Citylights crowd.
The Daily News today (Queens section) has an editorial by Helen Marshall in which she states that Hunters Point South will have an ownership aspect to it as well as rentals.
#32 – The problem with anonymous posting is that there is no credibility and continuity. You can make false statements and claims, run a full argument with only one person and otherwise create havoc. A user name is anonymous, but accountable which is why it is important and makes for a good discussion. Anonymous comments on blogs tend to get out of hand very quickly as you can see here and on curbed as well tons of other places.
Jake
My biggest problem with the QueensWest site is that it’s like way slow and hard to use since it got changed. And, yeah, it seems overly focused on towers by the water rather than the larger neighborhood as a whole. But maybe that’s what I’d prefer if I lived in a tower by the water.
I don’t think the conversation gets out of hand on LIQcity. Sure, there’s a few assholes, but mostly it’s good info. I think QW just needs a few technological improvements. community boards are vital to community! everything is online now so we should support it all. not make it competitive. just make it better. keep doing what yr doing QW & LIQ. Keep on keepin on….
There’s pluses and minuses to anon posting. And, it’s the easiest way to start out a blog. Technologically and content-wise. Overall the anon posting is still working, save for a few threads where people get unfortunately nasty. But it hasn’t reached systemic proportions. Hopefully it won’t.
The dissing on QW is uncalled for. Constructive feedback is different thing, and can be delivered in many ways. Jake is promoting LIC and has a lot of great info on QW. If you think there are ways he could make his site better, maybe shoot him an email instead of bashing him on liQcity.
Thanks for the love. (Haters, we love you too. :)
#29 – In the 10 years of running the site, I have banned maybe 10 people, all of which were given multiple warnings about personal attacks and who just couldn’t play by the rules. I have been running online communities for over ten years and that is by no means coming down hard. Opposing views and opinions are great, personal attacks and nonsense just for the sake of it, were not and are not allowed. Not everyone is a seasoned internet vet or an anonymous poster. #30 – Sorry you find the site a mess, the redesign actually brought thing inline with each other like forums, and content that was all over the place. Most of what is new in the forums can be found on one page (http://www.queenswest.com/forums/) as there is even a listing over everything new by date. (http://www.queenswest.com/recently_modified) . Beyond that you can actually create you OWN personal favorites list navigation to highlight any content from forum, to thread and keep track of it. (http://www.queenswest.com/Members/jake/favorites-new-queenswest-com-feature). Not only that, but the instant sitewide search gives you access to all content and you subscribe (via RSS) to anything on the site from people to postings to new content. All of that is new and all of that makes it easier to find things. As for the Curbed stuff, it is a myth. There are just a few banner posters who decided to use the anonymous feature of posting on curbed (and here) to lash out at me or anything else. There is no “your building is better than my building” accept on curbed and accept by anonymous people. Any other suggestions, would be great. Jake
http://www.licnyc.com has good message boards too.
Queenswest is not an LIC website. It is a City Lights website and in fact has City Lights as its logo.
I guess it is actually a website about Gantry Park since it has the Gantries in the logo as well.
Jake
C’mon, Jake. Yes, you are really very skilled at rebutting everyone. Still, you can’t honestly deny that QW.com wasn’t originally a Citylights-centric website and that many outside posters sensed that it was peppered with insider gossip and knowing wink-and-nod remarks. Many of the comments about QW.com may seem overly harsh or unfair to you. But the fact that people are airing them out probably means there is some basis to their criticism and that they would like to see QW take on board the feedback.
I don’t deny that when it started almost 10 years ago, that I built up information on Citylights first. It was the only building there in Queens West and the primary focus. As the neighborhood grew, so did the website to the point where the neighborhood board is the most popular by far and the business directory lists over 100 local businesses.
Jake
Jake,
Arguing that QueensWest is a LIC website because it lists over a 100 local businesses is really reaching for it don’t you think?. Someone already highlighted above that QueensWest is a great place if you want to find the number to the local nail salon (which happens to be in Citylights by the way).
While you may not want to accept the criticism, reality is that your website and the folks on think that that the world revolves around City Lights. There are plenty of people coming to the neighborhood who are interested in this type of thing, which is why they moved on to sites like Liqcity along time ago.
Also this whole thing that you cultivated with your gang and the viral attacks on Arris lofts was pretty juevenile and inappropriate. LIC doesn’t need any of this. Spare us the arguments that you didn’t have anything to do with this one either.
I frequently post on the neighborhood, lounge and Gantry Park boards, and I do not live in Citylights. I rarely post on the boards that specify individual bldngs. ie Citylights, East Coast and Riverview unless it is a topic that does not apply just to those bldngs.
If you read the boards, you will quickly learn that other than the specific bldng boards the topics discussed do reach out to the community.
In addition, the Business Directory reaches a wide swath of LIC.
What is with all the Jake hate? I only picked up on his site about a year ago, but I don’t see any controversial stuff there and the forums will cover whatever is brough up by the commenters? Why does this have to be a competition? QW and LIQCity are both good, each with its own feel and vibe, and I like both of them. Now, Queens Crap on the other hand, that site is an embarrassment.
Sorry #44, I have not “gang” and have never done a “viral” attack on Arris or anything else.
I don’t know where you get your information, but if it rhymes with “burbed” it is totally inaccurate.
Shoot me an email and I would be more than happy to discuss.
Jake
Jake hate is the new Hillary Hate. :)
I love all the new websites and attention for the neighborhood I live in.
Jake
Ugh, I just can’t stand this new uses of the word hate that have gained prevalence recently, especially on the Internet. I especially dislike expressions like “hater” and “hate on.” Hate is a really strong word in English. I wouldn’t like to see it diminished through trivial overuse.
As someone who never has and likely never will never live in a swank tower, I find it hillarious and bizarre that tere are rivalries between them. It’s like dorms. Or Frats.
This is really old. Please take it to Curbed or Queens West and don’t ruin a good site with this silly bickering. This is one of the main reasons why I stopped reading QW and Curbed. No idea who Jake is and I got tired of hearing about him and from all of his his rivals.
Jake stay on QW. You don’t need to be every LIC website advertising QW, acting like the mayor of LIC. Those inclined to read your observations and hang out with your Citylights pals know where to go to find you. Anon poster please stay on Curbed, where you can accuse Jake of everything that is wrong in the world.
Both please stay away from LIQ.
What’s with the QW.com bashing? Its been a terrific community site for a long time, and is a great service to the residents and the businesses. I don’t know Jake, but he’s been very fair and is in no way fostering a clique like you all claim.
#51, you are a riot. You chastise everyone for bashing Jake in your own post, which is essentially a bashing of Jake!
I agree that this thread has run its course. But I had no idea that simple comparisons of LIQcity and QWest.com would be considered such a touchy subject. But by no means have any of the comments stooped to Curbed’s level.
Liqcity >>>>> QW.com
Nuff said. Noone goes there anymore and I agee it is for the reasons others posted there whether Jake wants to accept their critism or not.
Also the part about not having a gang jake is pretty funny stuff. Hell, your #2 over there doesn’t even live in LIC.
Arris has hookers! ‘Nuff said.
Well, the path down this rat hole has been fun, but time to call it a day.
No, I will not “stay on my own website”, Yes, I will continue to post here if it adds to the conversation or information and finally, Yes, I will take the criticisms into account and see if there is something I can do about it.
Jake
I like both LIQcity and Queenswest.com. I think each provides an excellent source for information on the neighborhood.
Maybe we can all agree on one thing — the “Queens Crap” website blows. The blogger and all commenters seem to think everything sucks in Queens and that all proposed solutions suck as well.
The other websites focus more on the positives in Queens and what can be done to maintain or improve the area.
The guy at BushwickBK is a libertarian bastard.
God this is boring. I was hoping for an interesting discussion about HPS.
LiQcity, you should do a posting on what happened at the HPS community board hearing. Why is there no news about it?
This website is biased and extremely partial. I thought that web sites such as this are supposed to be informative not just another advertising tool for a company to use because they have a relationship with the web site owner…
Most of these ‘project’ posts are from people that have probably just moved here or to NYC in general. They don’t have a clue. These are not projects like Ravenswood or Queensbridge. They are affordable housing for middle income people. The people that have been here before you are middle income people. You are insulting the people that lived in this neighborhood way before you. So while you pay overpriced rents in your cubicles at least we middle income people will be paying decent prices for our cubicles. And we’ll be on the water as well. Ha.
Either assimilate to the neighborhood you moved into or move out becuase the old timers ain’t going nowhere.
